육자대명왕진언⋅천수다라니 수행과 깨달음 - 龍城禪師의 眞言持誦을 중심으로 - (Enlightenment and Practices with Two Mantras of One Thousand-hands and Six-syllabus)

초록

본 논문은 근대 한국불교의 큰 스승인 龍城禪師가 출가한 뒤 19세경에 양주 보광사 도솔암에서 오로지 대비주와 육자주를 지송하면서 수행에 전력하였으며, 大覺 이후 『육자영감대명왕경』과 『천수경』을 譯述⋅出版하였다는 사실에 착안하여, 육자대명왕진언과 천수다라니를 중심으로 용성선사의 견해에 주목하면서, 밀교에서 진언지송에 대한 전반적인 개요 및 특성, 참선과의 연관, 진언지송에 대해 용성선사를 비롯한 한국 禪師들의 수용태도 등을 밝혀보고자 하였다.
육자진언은 5불과 금강살타, 즉 부처와 중생계를 모두 그의 상징 내용으로 삼고 있으므로 육자진언을 관상함으로써 각기 5불과 금강살타가 상징하는 법계를 성취할 수 있다. 또한 『육자영감대명왕경』과 『천수경』은 우리나라 관음신앙의 큰 바탕을 이루게 된다. 이 두 경의 공통점은 진언지송에 있으며 진언지송을 통해서 念念不昧에 이르고 일체의 망념을 쳐부수어 산란한 마음을 통일시키는 데에서 疑團과 연결점을 찾게 된다. 그러나 진언지송이 단순한 話頭參究의 전단계에 그친 것이 아니라 용성의 몇 차에 걸친 覺의 과정에서 진언수행은 전체의 수행을 뒷받침하는 바탕을 이루게 된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 진언지송에 대한 용성선사의 견해가 전통적인 밀교의 견해와 동일한 맥락이며, 상당히 전문적인 단계에까지 이른 것으로 파악할 수 있기 때문이다. 이와 같은 용성선사의 진언지송을 통해서 육자대명왕진언과 천수다라니가 과거 우리나라의 禪師들에 의해서 애호되었고, 오늘날까지 僧俗을 초월하여 널리 유행하게 되었는지를 짐작할 수 있다.

영어초록

The main focus of this present work will try to correlate of the Buddhist Enlightenment and Practices specially on the view reciting of mantra practices with Two Mantras of One thousand-hands and Six-syllabus according to the master Yong-sung.
Master Yong-sung, one of the great masters of the Korean modern Buddhism, had devoted himself to ascetic practices in studying the mantra of great compassion and the mantra of six syllabus since around 19 years old at the Dosolam of Bokwang temple located in Yangju after entering the priesthood.
After his reaching first enlightenment, Master Yong-sung translated and published the Sutra of Six-syllabus Mantra and the Sutra of One Thousand-hands into Korean. Based on the mentioned books published by Master Yong-sung, how he accepted and thought about the Mantra of Six-syllabus and the Dharani of One Thousand-hands and what the related philosophical issues were have been investigated in this thesis.
From the broader perspective, this thesis also investigated what the viewpoints to them were in the philosophy of Esoteric Buddhism which is the origin of the mantras. And the comparative investigation of the viewpoints of Master Yong-sung and the philosophy of Esoteric Buddhism, and the comparative analysis of mantras of the Korean Zen Masters were the core themes of this thesis.
As the Mantra of Six-syllabus has 5 Buddhas and Vajrasattva's world, corresponding to Buddha and the Human-beings respectively, as its symbolic contents, the worlds which are symbolized by the 5 Buddhas and Vajrasattvas can be realized by the ascetic practices for the Mantra of Six-syllabus.
The Sutra of Six-syllabus Mantra and the Sutra of One Thousand-hands had been the important foundation of the faith of Avalokitesuvara Boddhisattva in Korea. A common point of both Sutras lies in the reciting of mantra practices. If you reach deep state of mind by the reciting of mantra practices, you may purge the mind of false notions and find connection points to unify the restless mind.
From Master Yong-sung's characteristic viewpoint after having experienced several times of spiritual awakening, however, the reciting of mantra practice was not considered simply as a first step of practice of koan-zen but as a basis of the whole ascetic mantra practices. It explains that Master Yong-sung's view to the reciting of mantra practice is in the same context with that of the doctrine of Esoteric Buddhism, reaching remarkably supreme level.
Therefore it can be understood why the Mantra of Six-syllabus and the Dharani of One Thousand-hands have been cared by the past zen-masters and are popular even today not only among the temples but also among the ordinary people.
