초록

이제하의 「우리들의 時代」는 1969년 <地方行政>에 실린 단편소설이다. 이 소설은 이제하의 초기 단편 문법 질서로부터 벗어나 通俗性을 지닌 단편 작품으로, 그동안 발굴되지 못해 잊혀진 작품이다. 본고는 이 작품이 이제하 초기 작품 중 유일하게 통속적인 특성을 띤다는 점에 주목하여 그 의미를 찾아보고자 한다. 「우리들의 時代」는 「劉子略傳」과 같은 해 발표된 작품이지만, 정 반대의 특성을 보인다. 「劉子略傳」은 이제하 초기 단편의 전형적인 특성을 보여주는 작품으로 환상성과 이미지 중심의 작품인 데 반해, 「우리들의 時代」는 통속성에 기반한 일차적 플롯을 지닌 작품이다. 스토리(fabula)와 플롯(sujet)의 간극이 적은 작품이라는 점, 통속소설의 특징인 육체적 묘사의 官能性이 두드러진 점, 당시 지배적이었던 남성 질서에 기반한 스토리 전개와 묘사 등이 「우리들의 時代」의 통속성의 근거가 된다.
이제하 초기 단편에 비참한 현실을 직접적으로 묘사한 작품이 흔치 않다는 점에서, 「우리들의 時代」가 <地方行政>의 지면을 통해 대중들에게 현실의 비참함을 고발하고 있음을 추측할 수 있다. 「우리들의 時代」가 보여주는 통속성은 현실 비판의 위장적 소재로 활용한 것으로 가정하고 있다. 이 소설의 통속성은 작가가 단순히 대중성을 겨냥한 것이 아니라, 현실 비판적 의미를 내포한다는 데에 주목할만하다.

영어초록

Lee Jae-ha’s 「Our Times」 is a short story published in 1969 in the magazine 『Local Administration』. This story stands out among his early stories for its distinction from his usual grammatical rigor, embracing instead a more vulgarity. Overlooked until recently, it represents a forgotten piece in Lee’s body of work. This paper aims to explore the significance of the 「Our Times」, focusing on its unique status as the only story in Lee’s early period to adopt such a popular tone. Although released the same year as 「Yu Ja-yak Jeon」, 「Our Times」 embodies contrasting characteristics. While 「Yu Ja-yak Jeon」 is marked by the typical characteristics of Lee’s early works, emphasizing fantasy and imagery, 「Our Times」 adheres to a straightforward plot rooted in vulgarity. Its narrow gap between story(fabula) and plot(sujet), its sensual depiction as a typical aspect of popular fiction, and its storyline based on phallic order—all these elements form the basis of the work's mainstream appeal.
「Our Times」 differs fundamentally from 「Yu Ja-yak Jeon」 in its setting, which revolves around the life of a worker, grounded in reality, in contrast to the surreal musings of an artist that drive the latter. Given the scarcity of Lee’s early short stories that directly depict harsh realities, 「Our Times」 can be seen as a public indictment of societal hardships, reaching the public through the pages of 『Local Administration』. Notably, as 『Local Administration』 served as a propaganda publication for the Park Chung-hee dictatorship, it is speculated that Lee used this platform to expose harsh realities ironically, creating a form of critique. Disguised as a popular love story, the work subtly transitions personal issues into social ones by illustrating extreme realities, aligning with Lee's early consciousness of social issues. Thus, the popular tone in 「Our Times」 can be interpreted as a means to veil social critique, underscoring that the story's appeal to popular taste is more than a bid for accessibility, but a critique embedded in social awareness.
