유불교섭사의 맥락에서 바라본 조선 후기 불교 심성론의 변용 (The Change of the Theory of Mind and Nature in the late Joseon Buddhism through the Viewpoint of the Context of Negotiation History between Confucianism and Buddhism)

초록

명・청 교체기 이후 전개된 조선후기 사상계는 지배계층을 중심으로 성리학의 질서가 확고해지고 불교에 대한 비판적인 입장이 지배적이었다. 그러나 청나라의 등장으로 화이론적 질서가 깨어지면서 유학계 내부에서 성리학에 대한 비판이 일어나고, 불교계에서 심성론에 대한 논의가 일어나는 등 다소 복잡한 양상을 띠게 된다.
이 시기 유학계에서는 인물성의 同異에 관한 호락논쟁이 일어났으며, 성리학을 비판하면서 실학이 등장하게 된다. 또 불교계에서는 운봉 대지에 의하여 불교 심성론이 등장하게 된다. 이는 유학계의 ‘인물성동이 논쟁’에 대한 불교계의 대응으로 볼 수 있다. 또 백파와 초의에 의하여 ‘삼종선-이종선 논쟁’이 일어나면서 불교계의 나름의 심성론이 등장하게 된다. 또한 실학자들 가운데는 승려들과 교유하는 인물들이 많이 등장하고, 불교계 내부에서도 충효에 대한 유교윤리가 강조되기도 한다.
본고에서는 이러한 조선후기 사상계의 변화에 따른 유학계의 심성논쟁 및 불교와의 교섭관계를 살펴보고, 이에 대응한 불교계의 심성논쟁과 불교와의 교섭관계를 살펴보고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 특히 심성론의 관점에서 불교계는 어떠한 비판이론을 제시하였으며, 그것의 타당성과 특징 및 한계가 무엇인지를 고찰하였다.

영어초록

The thinkers of the late Joseon Dynasty, after the replacement of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, had a firm order in the Neo-Confucianism centered around the ruling classes, and had a dominant critical stance on Buddhism. However, with the advent of the Qing Dynasty, the Human-barbarian distinction order had been broken, criticism of Neo-Confucianism had taken place within the Confucianism world, discussion on theory of mind and nature had taken place in the Buddhist community, as well as other events. The conditions of those days had were very complicated.
During this period, there had been Ho-Rak controversy on the identity and difference of the nature of humans and other things. Silhak had also appeared with criticism of Neo-Confucianism. In the Buddhist world, Buddhist theory of mind and nature was also introduced by Unbong-Daeji. This can be seen as a response by the Buddhist community to ‘the controversy on the identity and difference of the nature of humans and other things’ of the Confucian world.
In addition, as ‘two kinds of Seon-three kinds of Seon controversy’ by Baekpa and Choui had been taking place, the Buddhist community also had their own theory of mind and nature. There were also many figures among Silhak scholars who communicated with monks, and the Confucian ethics of Loyalty and Filial Piety were also emphasized within the Buddhist community.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the dispute of mind and nature of the Confucian world and the relationship between Buddhism and Confucianism in response to the change of thought in the late Joseon Dynasty, then to examine that of the Buddhist world. In particular, the writer inquired into the critical theory of the Buddhist community from the viewpoint of the theory of mind and nature, and examined its validity, features and limitations.
