兪樾 <<古書疑義擧例>>의 성과와 한계 (The Achievements and Limitations of Yu Yue’s Examples of Doubtful Point in the Classical texts)

초록

兪樾은 고전문헌의 난해함이 단지 어휘와 문법의 문제가 아니라 오랜 시간에 걸친 전승과정에서 발생한 텍스트의 변형에서 기인하는 것이라 설명한다. 즉, 다양한 방식으로 전승되던 고대의 문헌이 목판본 형태로 변모하는 과정에서 발생한 여러 가지 현상을 파악해야만 고전의 의미를 명확히 이해할 수 있다는 주장이다. 이러한 관점에서 고전문헌에 보이는 다양한 현상과 그 원인을 추출하여 총 7권 88례로 묶어 귀납한 작업이 바로 兪樾의 <<古書疑義擧例>>이다. “古書疑義擧例”는 말 그대로 “古書에서 보이는 의문점[疑義]을 여러 가지 사례를 들어[擧例] 설명한다”는 의미로, 이 책이 무엇을 어떻게 다루고 있는지 제목에 모두 잘 드러나고 있다. 兪樾은 대체로 독해 당시 익숙한 규범 기준에서 벗어나 있는 지점에서 ‘疑義’가 발생하며, 이는 크게 두 가지 원인에서 기인한다고 분석한다.
첫째, 규범의 변환과 파격으로 이루어진 고전 글쓰기 방식의 특수성을 이해하지 못한 경우이다. 古人들의 입장에서는 비교적 자주 쓰이던 일부 글쓰기 방식들이 시간이 지나면서 표준적인 학습의 테두리에서 벗어나게 되었고, 이에 따라 후대의 사람들은 일반적인 규범의 틀로는 해당 문장을 해석 할 수 없게 되면서 이해의 장애가 발생하게 되는 것이다. 즉, 고전문헌의 역사성에 대한 명확한 인식이 疑義를 해소할 수 있는 방법이다. 둘째, 문헌 전승의 과정에서 발생하는 다양한 형태의 현상들을 이해하지 못한 경우이다. 표면적으로는 문헌 전승에 대해 인식하고 있을지라도 구체적으로 문헌 전승과정에서 발생하는 여러 현상들을 체득하지 못한 상태에서는 이러한 현상들로 인해 발생한 문제들을 이해할 수 없게 된다.
兪樾이 <<古書疑義擧例>>에서 疑義의 유형을 분류하고 다양한 사례를 제시한 이유는, 고전문헌의 전승과정에서 보이는 여러 가지 현상과 고대의 글쓰기 방식에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 원래의 의미에 도달할 수 있는 방법을 제시하기 위한 것이었다. 또한 각 유형에 해당하는 사례를 들어 고전 문헌의 옛 모습을 복원하고자 하는 의도가 담겨 있다.
이러한 兪樾의 집필 의도는 비교적 큰 성공을 거두었다. 도저히 이해하기 힘든 고전의 여러 구절에 대해 평이한 문체와 흥미로운 예시를 들어 효과적으로 해설한 <<古書疑義擧例>>는 淸末民初의 학자들에게 큰 환영을 받았다. 그러나 근대적 지식의 세례를 받은 신진학자들에게는 신랄한 비판의 대상으로 전락하고 마는데, <<古書疑義擧例>>의 성공과 퇴장의 과정은 중국의 현대적 학술의 형성을 이해하는 데 흥미로운 시사점을 제공하기도 한다.

영어초록

Yu Yue explained that the abstrusity of classical texts is not just a matter of vocabulary and grammar, but of variations in texts that have occurred over a long period of time. In other words, he argued that the meaning of the classics can be clearly understood only if the ancient literature, which was handed down in various ways, is identified in the process of transforming into a block book version. From this point of view, Yu Yue’s Examples of Doubtful Point in the Classical texts extracts various phenomena and causes shown in classical texts and binds them together into a total of 7 volumes and 88 examples. “Examples of Doubtful Point in the Classical texts” literally means explaining ‘the questions’ seen in the ‘classical texts’ with ‘various examples’, and the title shows what and how the book deals with them. Yu Yue generally analyzed that the Doubtful Point arises at points that deviate from the normative standards familiar at the time of reading, which largely stem from two causes.
First, it is the misunderstanding the specificity of the classical writing style, which consists of transformations and unconventionalities of norms. Some of the writing styles that were used relatively frequently in the ancient age have become out of the standard learning framework over time, which leads to a disability of understanding as later people cannot interpret the sentence under the framework of general norms. In other words, a clear perception of the historical nature of classical texts is a way to resolve Doubtful Point. Second, it is the failure to understand the various forms of phenomena that occur in the course of literature transmission. Although they are ostensibly aware of literature transmission, they are unable to understand the problems caused by these phenomena when they are not specifically aware of the various phenomena that occur in the literature transmission process.
The reason why Yu Yue classified the types of Doubtful Point in this book and presented various examples was to suggest ways to reach the original meaning based on his understanding of various phenomena and ancient writing methods seen in the transmission of classical texts. It is also intended to restore the old appearance of classical texts, citing examples that correspond to each type.
Yu Yue’s intention to write was relatively successful. Examples of Doubtful Point in the Classical texts, which effectively explained various passages of the classics, with plain style and interesting examples, was highly welcomed by scholars of the 19-20th century. However, new scholars who have been baptized with modern knowledge end up being subject to acrimonious criticism. The success and fall of Examples of Doubtful Point in the Classical texts provides interesting implications for understanding the formation of modern Chinese academic system.
