초록

본 글은 비페이위(畢飛宇)의 소설 《마사지사(推拿)》(2008)에 나타난 장애 당사자의 일상이라는 시점전환의 의미와 윤리적 태도를 짚어보는 것에 목적을 둔다. 마사지센터에서 일하는 시각장애인들이 주인공인 이 소설은 장애인의 생활 경험을 밀도 있게 그려낸다. 여기에 자신들을 향한 비장애인의 생각이 어떻게 폭력이 되는지에 관한 예리한 비판을 덧붙여, 인간 이전에 장애인이라는 범주가 먼저 인식의 작용을 일으키면서 벌어지는 모멸과 차별을 섬세하게 포착한다. 때문에 작품 속에서 장애는 은유나 상징이 아니라 그들 자신 혹은 삶 그 자체를 가리킨다.
소설은 장애를 인간의 조건으로 여긴다. 장애는 자신의 정체성을 구성하는 한 요소이기에, 이야기는 장애를 극복하고 해방된다는 판타지가 되지 않는다. 장애가 정체성이자 삶의 조건이 된 이들의 일상이 이야기의 중심을 이룬다면, 장애를 바라보는 비장애인의 시선은 곁가지가 되어 사회적 환기를 돕고 있다. 공동체 내 다수를 차지하고 있는 비장애인의 시선 속에서 장애인은 실상이 제대로 전달되기 어려운 소수를 점한다. 작가는 수적 우위를 점한 비장애인의 시선을 뒤집었을 때 야기되는 파장의 깊이를 기저에 두고 장애인의 시점에서 비장애인을 바라보고 있다.
시각 장애인의 삶 속으로 깊이 들어가겠다는 작가의 의지는 마사지센터를 이야기가 펼쳐지는 장소로 설정한 것으로도 엿볼 수 있다. 그곳은 이러한 비슷한 신체 조건을 가진 사람들이 대다수를 이루고 있다는 점에서 규범화된 사회 속 ‘장애 대 비장애’의 구도에서 벌어지는 일들을 역으로 추론해 볼 수도 있다. 본 글은 이를 규명하는 한편 작품이 장애라는 삶의 조건이 개인의 삶을 훼멸하지 않는다는 점을 강조하고 있음에 주목한다. 이를 통해 장애와 비장애 모두 인간이 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는 ‘자연스러운’상태이며, 다양한 존재 방식 가운데 하나임을 증명해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the meaning and ethical attitude of changing the viewpoint of the daily life of the disabled in Bipfeiyu’s novel “Massager”(2008). The novel, which features blind people working at massage centers, depicts the life experiences of the disabled in density. In addition to the sharp criticism of how non-disabled people’s thoughts toward them become violence, it delicately captures the contempt and discrimination that occurs when the category of disabled people first causes the action of perception before humans. Therefore, disability in the work does not refer to metaphors or symbols, but to themselves or life itself.
The novel considers disability as an existential condition. Since disability is a component of one’s identity, the story does not become a fantasy of overcoming it and being liberated. If the daily lives of those whose disability has become an identity and a condition of life are at the center of the story, the non-disabled’s gaze on the disability is beside them to help social ventilation. In the eyes of the non-disabled, who occupy the majority in the community, the disabled occupy a small number that is difficult to convey the reality properly. The artist is looking at the non-disabled from the perspective of the disabled based on the depth of the wavelength that occurs when the gaze of the non-disabled who has a numerical advantage is reversed.
The artist’s willingness to go deep into the life of the visually impaired can also be seen by setting the massage center as a place where the story unfolds. In that the majority of people with similar existential conditions make up the majority, it is also possible to infer from what happens in the structure of ‘disability versus non-disabled’ in a standardized society. While this article identifies this, it is noted that the work emphasizes that the condition of life of disability does not destroy an individual’s life. Through this, I would like to prove that both disability and non-disabled are ‘natural’ states that humans can face and are one of many ways of being.
