초록

본 연구에서는 2011년부터 2022년까지 네이버 웹소설에서 확인할 수 있는 웹소설 전체 제목 48,530편에 대한 코퍼스를 구축하고 웹소설 제목의 전반적인 특징과 장르별 제목의 어휘 빈출을 확인하여 웹소설 장르의 특성과 장르간 상호 교섭 양상을 확인하였다.
2022년 한 해에만 네이버 웹소설은 1만 개가량의 작품을 제공하였고, 2023년에 들어서도 한 달에 수백 편이 넘는 웹소설이 새롭게 창작되어 올라오고 있다. 웹소설 생산의 기하급수적인 팽창은 이 시장이 얼마나 과열되어 있는지, 경쟁이 얼마나 치열한지를 가늠하게 한다. 상황이 이러할 때 독자 곧 소비자의 선택 행위에 있어 ‘제목’은 작품에 대한 1차적 정보를 제공하는 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 웹소설은 회차당 비용을 지불하는 결제 방식으로 판매되기 때문에 웹소설 독자가 콘텐츠를 고를 때 제공되는 정보들은 상대적으로 빈약하다는 특징이 있다. 이때 ‘제목’은 웹소설이라는 상품을 감싸는 가장 위층의 표피로서 독자의 시선을 끌 수 있는 역할을 해야 할 뿐만 아니라 내용과 서사구조에 대한 풍부한 정보를 제공하는 함축적 기능을 수행할 수 있어야 한다. 웹소설은 하위장르마다 고유의 클리셰가 존재하며 웹소설 창작은 정형화된 이야기의 양식을 조합하는 방식으로 이루어진다. 이에 따라 웹소설의 제목은 점차 작품이 갖고 있는 이야기의 화소와 양식을 드러내는 표지들을 새겨 넣는 방식으로 진화하고 있다. 웹소설의 제목은 어휘뿐만 아니라 형태소, 종결어미를 비롯 말줄임표와 같은 문장부호까지 모두가 ‘기호’로서 역할한다. 웹소설 제목은 작가의 순수한 창작물이 아니라 웹소설 세계에서 통용되는 기호들의 재배치이며 서사의 내용을 드러내는 기표로서 기능하는 것이다. 창작자는 제목이 갖는 문법을 체현함으로써 독자가 알아차리게끔 작품의 장르적 특성과 이야기의 소재를 드러낼 수 있다. 독자는 창작자가 제시한 기호들의 의미를 해석함으로써 서사의 내용을 짐작할 수 있다.
웹소설 제목의 가장 중요한 특징은 문장형 제목이 꾸준히 길어지고 있다는 점이다. 문장형 제목의 증가는 현대 판타지에서부터 시작해 로맨스판타지 등에서 두루 확인된다. 다만 로맨스와 같이 오래전부터 향유되어온 장르에서는 문장형 제목으로의 변화가 매우 더디게 나타난다. 문장형 제목의 증가는 상대적으로 신생 장르에서 두드러지는데 상대적으로 시장 안정성이 떨어지는 신생 장르들이 제목을 최대한 길게 함으로써 정보 제공량을 늘리고 독자의 관심 분야를 어필하는 기능을 수행하고 있음을 짐작할 수 있다.
제목이 길어짐으로써 장르적 특성을 체현하는 경향이 더욱 짙어진다고 할 때 이를 보다 뒷받침하기 위해서는 제목에 나타난 어휘에 대한 양적, 질적 분석이 수행될 필요가 있다. 웹소설 제목이 기호들의 집합이므로 기호성이 두드러지는 어휘를 장르별로 살핌으로써 장르적 특징, 장르간 관계를 파악할 수 있는 것이다. 제목에 등장하는 결혼, 이혼, 계약 등이 로맨스와 로맨스판타지에서 사용되는 양상을 통해 로맨스물의 마스터 플롯이 변주를 일으키는 상황을 확인할 수 있으며 제목의 어휘를 통해 서사물의 배경이 어디인지를 확인함으로써 로맨스를 이루는 남녀의 관계 양상이 다르다는 것을 암시받을 수 있다. 회귀, 빙의, 귀환 등의 어휘는 그 자체로 서사물로 통용되고 있으며 현대판타지 장르와 로맨스판타지 모두에서 서사의 중심축으로 역할한다. 하지만 주인공의 성별의 차이, 각각이 지는 능력의 차이, 여기에서 비롯한 서사구조의 차이가 장르의 차이를 만들어내고 이세계(異世界)의 성격에 대한 차이가 발생하여 장르의 성격이 명확해지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 본고에서는 이렇게 장르의 특징을 보여주는 제목의 어휘들을 유형화하여 밝히고 구체적인 작품에 기반하여 분석함으로써 제목의 어휘가 갖는 내포적 의미를 드러내고자 한다. 그러한 의미에서 웹소설의 장르 혼종은 새로운 장르의 생성이라기 보다는 웹소설 내에서 이루어지는 2차저작의 산물이라고도 볼 수 있다. 웹소설 장르 전반에서 제목의 어휘 다양성이 떨어지는 추세를 보이는 것도 장르 교섭이 매우 활발한 결과라고 말할 수 있다.

영어초록

In this study, we established a corpus for 48,530 web novel titles that can be found in ‘Naver Series’ from 2011 to 2022, and checked the overall characteristics of web novel titles and vocabulary frequency of titles in each genre to find out the characteristics of web novel genres and genre hybrid pattern.
In 2022 alone, Naver web novels provided about 10,000 works, and even in 2023, hundreds of new web novels are newly created and uploaded in just one month. The exponential expansion of web fiction production is a testament to how hot this market is and how competitive it is. In this situation, the ‘title’ plays a very important role in providing primary information about the work in the selection of readers, or consumers. Because web novels are purchased with a payment method that pays for each episode, the information provided when web novel readers select content is relatively scarce. At this time, the ‘title’, as the uppermost skin covering the web novel product, should not only play a role in attracting the reader's attention, but also perform an implicit function of providing abundant information on the content and narrative structure. Each sub-genre of a web novel has its own cliché, and the creation of a web novel is done by combining standardized storytelling styles. Accordingly, the title of a web novel is gradually evolving into a way to engrave signs that reveal the elements and styles of the story of the work. In the title of a web novel, not only vocabulary, but also morphemes, final endings, and punctuation marks such as ellipses all play a role as ‘symbols’ of narrative. The title of a web novel is not a pure creation of the author, but a rearrangement of symbols commonly used in the world of web novels, and functions as a signifier that reveals the content of the narrative.
The most important feature of web novel titles is that sentence-type titles are steadily getting longer. The increase in sentence-type titles is confirmed throughout, starting with modern fantasy and romance fantasy. However, in genres that have been enjoyed for a long time, such as romance, the change to sentence-type titles appears very slowly. The increase in sentence-type titles is noticeable in relatively new genres, and it can be assumed that new genres with relatively low market stability needs to increase the amount of information provided and appeal to readers by making the titles as long as possible.
When it is said that the tendency to embody genre characteristics becomes more intense as the title gets longer, quantitative and qualitative analysis of the vocabulary in the title needs to be performed to further support this. Since web novel titles are a set of symbols, genre characteristics and relationships between genres can be identified by examining prominent vocabularies. Through the aspect of marriage, divorce, contract, etc. appearing in the title being used in romance and romance fantasy, it is possible to confirm the situation in which the master plot of the romance novel causes variation. And also by confirming where the background of the narrative is through the vocabulary of the title, it can be implied that the relationship between men and women who make up romance is different. Vocabulary such as return, possession is used as a narrative in itself and serves as a central axis of narrative in both the modern fantasy genre and romance fantasy. However, the difference in the gender of the main characters, the difference in each ability, and the difference in the narrative structure that converges them create a difference in genre. The clear difference in the nature of the Second World also serves as an index to distinguish the genre. In this paper, we try to reveal the connotative meaning of the vocabulary of the title by categorizing and clarifying the vocabulary of the title showing the characteristics of the genre and analyzing it based on the specific work. In that sense, the genre hybridization of web novels can be seen as a product of secondary writing within web novels rather than the creation of a new genre. It can be said that the fact that the lexical diversity of titles in general through the TTR analysis shows a decreasing trend is a result of very active genre negotiations.
