경성 미쓰코시(三越) 백화점 판매 ‘조선특산 나전칠기’ 제작과 유통 (Selling at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Kyungseong, Production and Distribution of ‘Special Choseon Lacquerware’ Inlaid with Mother-of Pearl)

초록

‘조선특산 나전칠기’는 제작품 자체 혹은 이를 보관하기 위한 상자의 겉면에 제작처·판매처의 이름 혹은 마크(Mark)와 함께 ‘조선특산(朝鮮特産)’이란 명문이 적힌 라벨(Label)이 붙어 있는 공예품이다. ‘조선특산’명 공예품의 등장은 1915년 조선총독부가 개최한 ‘(시정5년기념)조선물산공진회’에서 구체화된 ‘조선물산’의 개념에서 비롯한다.
그동안 조선물산은 1920년대 일제강점 속 국산품을 애용하자는 전국적 계몽운 동인 ‘조선물산장려운동’의 일환으로, 그 의미가 조선의 선조들이 남긴 기술과 생산품으로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 조선총독부가 개최한 공진회 및 공진회보고서, 조선총독부가 인가한 ‘경성상업회의소’ 발간물인 『경성상공명록』 속 조선물산은 식민통치시설 및 일본인 운영자가 운영한 제작소에서 생산된 것으로, 일본의 근대식 기술에 의해 개량된 한반도의 생산품임을 알 수 있다.
현재까지 확인되는 ‘조선특산 나전칠기’의 판매처들은 백화점의 판매 매장, 제작소의 진열관, 상회의 진열장이 주를 이루는데, 경성 미쓰코시백화점에서 판매된 ‘조선특산 나전칠기’를 통해 그 제작목적과 소비구조를 파악해 보았다. 또한 경성 미쓰코시백화점 판매 조선특산 나전칠기가 백화점에서 전시·판매된 형태, 제작의 목적과 소비대상, 유통구조 등을 다각도로 살펴봄으로써 일제강점 당시 궁극 적으로 조선특산 공예품이 내포한 특성이 무엇인지 유추해 보았다.
본 연구는 일제강점기 ‘조선특산 나전칠기’가 개발하여 상품화해야 하는 ‘조선물 산’의 주력 공업품으로서 그 기능과 성격이 한정되었고, 『상표법』이라는 근대화된 법제도 아래에서 판매처의 상호와 결합하여 전 세계인을 대상으로 판매되는 ‘조선 특산’이라는 품목(item)으로 특화되었음을 밝히고자 하였다.

영어초록

“Choseon’s special lacquerware inlaid with mother-of pearl” is an artifact with a label with the inscription ‘Chosen Specialty’ along with the name of the manufacturer, seller or Mark on the exterior of the production itself or the box for storing it. The emergence of “Choseon’s Specialty” stems from the concept of “Choseon’s Product” embodied at the “Chosen Mulsan Gongjinhoe(Chosen Industrial Exhibition)” held by the Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1915.
Until now, “Choseon’s Product” has been known as a technology and product left by Choseon’s ancestors as part of the “Chosun Production Movement” a national enlightenment movement to use domestic products under Japanese colonial rule in the 1920s.
However, “Choseon’s Product” in the ‘Report of the Chosen Mulsan Gongjinhoe’ published by the Japanese Government-General and the Report of the Kyungseong’s Commerce and Industry published by the Kyungseong Commercial Chamber was produced by colonial facilities and production centers operated by Japanese operators, indicating that it is a product of the Korean Peninsula.
The sales outlets of “Choseon’s special lacquerware inlaid with mother-of pearl” which have been identified so far, consist mainly of department stores, display halls of production centers, and commercial displays, and figured it out the purpose and consumption structure of “Choseon’s special lacquerware inlaid with mother-of pearl” sold at Kyungseong Mitsukoshi Department Store.
In addition, by examining the form of “Choseon’s special lacquerware inlaid with mother of pearl” displayed and sold at the Kyungseong Mitsukoshi department stores, the purpose of production, consumption target, and distribution structure of Department Store, it was inferred what the characteristics of “Choseon’s special crafts” ultimately included during the Japanese colonial period.
This study attempted to clarify that its function and nature were limited as the main industrial product of “Choseon’s Product” which should be developed and commercialized by Japanese colonial era, “Choseon’s special lacquerware inlaid with mother-of pearl” and that it was specialized as an item called “Choseon’s Specialty” sold to people around the world in combination with the name of sellers under the modern legal system called “Trademark Act.”
