<통문관지>를 통해 본 사역원 교재의 변화와 용도 (Changes and Uses of Foreign Language Learning Textbooks in the Joseon Dynasty: Seen Through Compendium of the Interpreter’s Bureau)

초록

본 연구는 숙종대 초간본과 정조대 중간본으로 전하는 『통문관지』에 근거하여 사학 교재 전체의 시기별 변화양상과 용도를 분석한 것이다. 조선시대 사역원 교재에 관한 연구 성과는 많지만, 사학(四學; 한학･청학･몽학･왜학) 가운데 한 분야 혹은 한 종의 교재를 세밀하게 분석한 나머지 사학 전체의 교재 변화를 통합하여 살펴보는 데에는 미흡한 면이 있었기 때문이다.
먼저 『통문관지』 「집물」의 책판 기록과 「서적」의 기록을 비교 분석하여 당시 사역원에서 보유하고 있었던 서책의 정보를 추출하였다. 그리고 이와 동일한 판종의 현전 여부 및 서지 정보를 조사하여 제시하였다. 그 결과, 몽학 교재를 제외하고 대체로 동일한 서책을 확인할 수 있었다.
사역원 역관에 대한 각종 시험 규정에는 시험 교재로 선정한 서책의 명칭이 보이는데, 이를 통해 각 언어별 교재의 교체 시기와 활용 방식을 분석하였고, 시기별 변화양상도 함께 살펴보았다. 이에 따라 조선 후기의 사역원 교재는 숙종대에 전반적인 정비가 완료되었으며, 영조대의 개간을 거쳐 다양한 방식으로 활용되었음을 알 수 있었다. 조선은 주변 국가의 실제 언어를 익히기 위해 학습 교재의 개편에 적극적이었으며, 국제 정세에 대응하기 위해 나름의 노력을 기울인 것이다. 그리고 각기 다른 나라의 문자와 언어를 익히는 교재에 해당 언어의 독음과 번역문을 한글로 표기하는 방식이 매우 유용했음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Although extensive research has been conducted on textbooks used by the Office of Interpreters (Sayeok-won, 司譯院) during the Joseon Dynasty, there has been a lack of research that integrates and analyzes the textbooks of Sahak (四學), or the four language schools－Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, and Jurchen－as a whole. These language schools were established to train interpreters to assist with diplomatic affairs, and the interpreters played a crucial role in Joseon's interactions with neighboring states. This study integrates and analyzes the textbooks of the four language schools, examining the changes and uses of these textbooks through the records in the Compendium of the Interpreter’s Bureau (Tongmun-gwanji, 通文館志), which includes both the first edition compiled during King Sukjong’s reign (17th century) and the revised edition from King Jeongjo’s reign (18th century).
First, the study analyzes the "Chapter on Items" (Jipmul, 什物), which details the woodblocks held by the Office of Interpreters (Sayeokwon, 司譯院), and the "Chapter on Books" (Seojeok, 書籍), which records information about the Office’s book collection, to extract details about the materials it held at the time. Additionally, it investigated the locations of editions of the same type and their bibliographic details. As a result, most of the same editions were identified, but in the case of Mongolian textbooks, only later editions had to be used as substitutes.
The various examination regulations for interpreters of the Office of Interpreters mention the names of books used as test materials. By analyzing these references, the study was able to trace the changes in textbooks over time and examine their compilation contexts. The study found that the textbooks were revised multiple times to help learners acquire the practical languages of the various countries surrounding Joseon. In other words, Joseon was proactive in compiling and publishing textbooks as a means of training interpreters who were proficient in conversation, in response to the ever-changing international political landscape. Furthermore, the textbooks proved to be highly practical for pronunciation and comprehension by including phonetic annotations in Hangul and explanatory translations.
