근대 복합운동 공간인 훈련원 공원의 변천에 관한 연구 (Study on the change of the Hullyeonwon Park, a modern space for all-purpose exercise)

초록

조선시대 훈련원 터에 조성되었던 훈련원 공원은 근대 체육시설인경성운동장과 함께 복합운동장으로의 면모를 갖추고 있었다. 훈련원공원은 근대공원의 발달사에서 시대적인 특징을 지녔음에도 불구하고 이에 대한 연구는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 훈련원 공원의 공간 구성과 영역 변천과정을 분석하여 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선시대 훈련원은 한양도성 동쪽의 성벽 내측의 평평한 지역에 위치하고 있었다. 훈련부 청사 건물을 중심으로 전면의 너른 터는 군사훈련을 진행하는 공간이었다. 그러나 1907년 군대가 강제 해산되면서 공간 성격은 변모하기 시작했다. 둘째, 훈련원 공원은 1919년 9월개설되었으나 공원은 1921년 4월 완공되었다. 향후 운동경기장으로조성하고자 하는 계획 때문에 공원의 성격을 부각시키는 시설의 도입이 미흡했다. 더욱이 공원부지 내 운동시설의 도입으로 공원기능이 축소되었다. 셋째, 훈련원 부지 내 연못 터에 1925년 히로히토 御 成婚기념으로 경성운동장이 건설되었다. 경성운동장은 종합경기장에걸맞게 육상경기장을 비롯하여 야구장, 정구장, 경성풀장이 조성되었다. 경성운동장에서는 일본 식민체제를 견고하게 하는 행사와 조선의 민족적 자긍심을 돋우는 행사가 함께 진행되었다. 경기장 시설의구축은 휴식 공간을 축소시켰고, 기존의 공원 부지 또한 예산 확보를위해서 학교부지로 매각되어 면적의 축소는 가속화되었다. 넷째, 해방 이후 경성운동장은 서울운동장으로, 다시 동대문운동장으로 명칭이 변경되었고 2007년 철거되었다. 기존 훈련원 공원이 있었던 부지는 국립중앙의료원이 들어섰고, 이로 인해 1997년 훈련원 공원은 현재 장소에 새롭게 조성되었다. 이제 군사훈련장소였던 역사적 맥락은 명칭으로만 남아있고, 실질적인 이용과 기능은 동대문상권과 연계된 청소년 놀이시설과 지하의 상업시설로 공간 성격이 변모하였다.
본 연구는 훈련원 공원의 조성과정, 공간 구성요소, 경계 및 기능의 변화 등을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 훈련원 공원을 이해하는데 도움이될 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The Hullyeonwon Park, which was constructed in a military training ground, is becoming a all-purpose exercise facility together with the Gyeongseong Stadium, which is a modern sport facility. Although the Hullyeonwon Park has periodic characteristics in the history of development of modern parks, very few research has been conducted on it. The analysis of the Hullyeonwon Park space configuration and area transition process revealed the following. First, in the Joseon Dynasty, the Hullyeonwon facility was located in a flat area inside the eastern walls of Seoul city Wall. The open space located at the front of the government training building was used for military training. However, in 1907, as the military force was disbanded, the character of this space started to change. Second, the Hullyeonwon Park was built in September, 1919, but the park was completed in April, 1921.
Since there were plans of transforming it into a sport stadium in the future, not many facilities that would characterize it as a park were introduced.
Furthermore, the introduction of sport facilities in the site downsized even more its functionality as a park. Third, the Gyeongseong Stadium was constructed in 1925 at the location where the lake of the Hullyeonwon Park was to commemorate Hirohito’s marriage. The Gyeongseong Stadium was a sport complex with an athletic field, a ballpark, a tennis court, and a pool. In the Gyeongseong Stadium, events to solidify the Japanese colonial system and raise the national pride of Korea were carried out. Rest areas were reduced by the construction of stadium facilities, and the park site was sold as school ground for budget expansion, which accelerated the reduction of the area.
Fourth, After the liberation of Korea, the Gyeongseong Stadium had its name changed into Seoul Stadium, and then into Dongdaemun Stadium, and was finally demolished in 2007. A national medical center was constructed in the land were the Hullyeonwon park originally was. Due to this, in 1997, the Hullyeonwon Park was newly created where it is now. Now the historical military training center remains in name only, having been transformed into a children’s playground with underground commercial facilities linked to Dongdaemun’s commercial district. In this research, the Hullyeonwon Park construction process, spatial components, boundaries, and functional changes were examined. This research is expected to increase the understanding of the characteristics and history of the Hullyeonwon Park.
