초록

1323년 지온인(知恩院) 소장 <16관변상도>는 사이후쿠지(西福寺)본과 함께 고려후기 관경변상도를 대표하는 기준작이다. 지온인 <16관변상도>는 화면의 상단에 물, 땅, 나무 등의 아름다운 정토의 모습을 그리고 5관의 연지에서 흘러나온 물이 8곳의 연지를 이루며 불, 보살관인 正報觀을 둘러싸고 있는 구성을 보여준다.
특히 화면의 중앙 대부분을 차지할 정도로 7-13관을 크게 배치한 것은 매우 파격적인 구성이다. 사이후쿠지본이 송대의 <16관변상도>의 전통을 계승하고 있는반면 지온인본은 사이후쿠지본과 전혀 다른 화면구성과 도상을 창출해내고 있어고려적으로 변화된 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 이러한 구성은 사이후쿠지본과 마찬가지로 천태정토신앙에 기반을 두고 있다. 하지만 지온인본은 觀想修行이라는 목적에 충실하게 16妙觀修行의 단계를 정보관을 통해 효과적으로 표현해내고 있다.
16묘관수행은 摩訶止觀에 서술된 天台智顗의 一心三觀의 수행법을 觀無量壽 經에 적용한 것으로, 觀無量壽經疏에 해설해놓은 천태사상을 깊이 있게 이해할 때 비로소 수행이 가능하다.
일심삼관의 16묘관수행에 관한 연구가 가능했던 배경에는 대중을 기반으로 교세를 떨쳤던 백련결사가 개경의 수도에 정착하여 왕실의 후원을 받아 선종 이상의 세력을 넓혔던 시대적 상황과 관련이 있다. 1284년 忠烈王과 齊國大長公主의발원으로 妙蓮寺가 창건되면서 법화경과 천태소에 대한 교학적인 연구가 활성화된 것이 지온인본이 출현하게 된 직접적인 계기가 되었던 것으로 생각된다.
천태교학적인 연구는 여성왕생자에 대해서도 열린 시각을 제시하고 있다. 대승불교에서 여성을 성불이 불가능한 존재로 인식했던데 반해 천태지의는 成佛이 가능한 보살종성을 가진 사람으로 보았다. 이러한 사상은 <16관변상도>의 보관이나 九品往生장면에 여성인물들이 적극적으로 표현되었던 배경이 되었을 것이다.
고려인들이 이해한 천태교학을 바탕으로 구성된 지온인본의 화면구성은 파격적인 만큼 신선하다. 이후 조선 15세기 <16관변상도>의 화면구성과 도상에도 영향을 미치고 있어 더욱 의미가 있다고 하겠다. 지온인본은 백련결사로부터 촉발되어 묘련사의 창건과 함께 고려 귀족사회에 정착된 천태불교사상과 정토신앙이14-15세기 귀족적인 정토불교문화의 형성에 영향을 미친 사례로서 불교문화사적의미도 크다.

영어초록

The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations in Chion’in (知恩院, 1323), Kyōto, along with another illustration with the same title in Saifukuji Temple (西福寺), are the most representative illustrations of transformation tableau of the contemplation sutra of the late Goryeo Dynasty. The one housed in Chion’in depicts the Pure Land with waters, land, and trees in the upper section, and features a composition of waters from the lotus pond in the fifth visualization comprising ponds in eight places surrounding the resultant person (正報觀). The illustration exhibits an extremely dramatic composition by arranging the seventh to thirteenth contemplations in the center, occupying most of its part. While the illustration in the Saifukuji Temple succeeds to the tradition of the The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations of the Song Dynasty, the painting in Chion’in presents a composition and iconography entirely different from that of Saifukuji, and it can therefore be assumed that the painting was adopted into Goryeo style. Such composition is rooted in the belief of Celestial Terrace Pure Land, or Cheontae Paradise (Tientai jingtu; 天台 淨土), like the painting in Saifukuji. However, the illustration in Chion’in effectively depicts the stages of the practice of contemplation through the resultant person, being faithful to the aim of contemplative practice. The sixteen contemplative practices, which is an application of the Tiāntái Zhìyǐ’s practice of three-fold contemplations in one single thought (yixin sanguan; 一 心三觀) written in The Sutra of the Meditation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life (觀無量壽經), can only be achieved when the Tiantai thought explained inthe Sutra is understood in-depth.
Studies on the practice of attaining three-fold contemplations in one single thought were related to the circumstances of the time when the White Lotus Association, which had expanded its congregation among the public, established itself in the capital city of Gaegyeong through royal patronage and extended its sphere of influence more than the Zen sect. It seems that the invigoration of academic study on the Sutra of the Lotus and Tiāntáishū (天台 疏) with the establishment of Myoryeonsa Temple through the patronage of King Chungyeol and Jegukdaejang Princess was the direct influence behind the emergence of The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations housed in Chion’in.
The studies related to Tientai also offer an open perspective on women born in the Pure Land. Unlike Mahayana Buddhism, which viewed women as beings unable to attain Buddhahood, Tiāntái Zhìyǐ viewed them as those able to attain Buddhahood like bodhisattva. Such thought is presumed to have been the background behind female figures being actively depicted in the comprehensive visualization (12th visualization) or the nine-fold future life in the Pure Land in the The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations.
The composition of the painting in Chion’in, which is based on the understanding of the studies of Tientai by the Goryeo people, is original as much as it is sensational. The work takes on greater meaning, for it made influence on the composition and iconography of The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations after the fifteenth century of the Joseon Dynasty. The Illustration of the Sixteen Contemplations housed in Chion’in is an example of Tiantai Buddhism and Pure Land thought – emerged from the White Lotus Association together with the establishment of the Myoryeonsa Temple and therefore taking root in the Goryeo aristocracy – having an influence on the establishment of noble Pure Land Buddhist culture in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
