초록

경남지방 유치원교육은 1910년 밀양유치원 설립에서 시작되었다. 진주기독교유치원·고성유치원·통영기독유치원 등은 호주 장로교의 선교사업 일환이었다. 경남선교회는 일제강점기 이곳 유치원설립운동을 주도하는 중심 세력이었다. 문화계몽운동 진전은 1920년대 중반부터 이를 추동시켜 나갔다.
일제강점기 유치원설립운동은 다른 지방과 마찬가지로 개신교에 의하여 주도되었다. 당시 설립된 유치원 44개 중 36개소에 달한다. 이곳 특징 중 하나는 불교계의 적극적인 참여와 후원이었다. 동래 범어사, 양산 통도사, 산청 대원사 등은 대표적인 사례로서 주목할 부분이다.
자모회는 유치원교육에 대한 올바른 이해 심화와 사회적인 관심을 증폭시키는 ‘가교’였다. 원아들과 함께 한 원유회·학예회·동요가극대회 개최는 안정감을 배가시켰다. 보모와 상호 신뢰감에 기초한 긴밀한 유대는 교육내실화로 귀결되었다. 자모회는 경제적인 지원뿐만 아니라 중장기적인 발전책을 도모하였기 때문이다.
유치원설립운동은 근대교육운동의 주요한 영역을 차지하기에 이르렀다. 이는 스스로 결집된 응집력의 성과물이었다. 교육열 고조에 따른 초등교육기관 입학시험은 유치원교육 본래 취지를 상당히 변질시켰다. 유치원을 ‘예비학교’로서 인식은 이러한 역사적인 배경에서 비롯되었다. 문제점은 유치원교육 확산과 심화된 이해를 바탕으로 점차 극복될 수 있었다.

In Kyung-nam province, education in kindergarten started with the foundation of Miryang Kindergarten in 1910. The Jinju Christian Kindergarten․Goseong Kindergarten․Tongyeong Christian Kindergarten were part of the missionary works for the Presbyterian Church of Australia. In this area, Mission Society in Kyung-nam was the central force of Kindergarten Foundation Movement under the Japanese Colonial Government. The development of Cultural Enlightenment Movement lead this courses since middle of 1920’s.
The Protestantism Church lead the Kindergarten Foundation Movement in Kyung-nam province under the Japanese Colonial Government, as the other regions did. One of the characters in this region was the active participation and support of the Buddhism circles, such as Beomeosa Temple in Dongnae, Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan, Daewonsa Temple in Sanchong.
It was the Parental-Association that encouraged to get it right to education in kindergarten and to make widely the social interest. A Garden partyㆍSchool arts festivalㆍOpera of children's song held by children reinforced the stability. Close relationship with teachers of Kindergarten based on mutual trust was concluded the internal stability of education. It is because Parental-Association sought to support economically them and promoted the developing plans in the medium and long term.
Kindergarten Foundation Movement became occupied the important area of modern educational movements. This is the product of aggregative cohesive. As increasing the demand for education, the entrance examination for elementary education institutions decomposed significantly the original intent of kindergarten education. To regard kindergarten as ‘preparatory school’ stemed out of this historical situation. These problems were overcame by the spread of kindergarten education and the deepened understanding of it.
