보조 지눌의 ‘돈오점수론’에 대한 원불교적 관점 (The view of Won-Buddhism on the Chinul's 'gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment')

초록

본 연구의 목적은 원불교의 수행체계가 왜 ‘돈오점수’인지를 밝히는 것이다. 소태산이 ≪불조요경≫에「수심결」을 편입시킨 이유는 돈오공적에 빠진 수행을 경계하고 깨달음 이후의 바른 수행을 강조한데 있다. 한때 한국불교계의 ‘돈오점수’와 ‘돈오돈수’의 뜨거운 논쟁은 결국 ‘깨달음’에 대한 질적 판단과 결부되어 있다. 지눌의 경우 돈오를 해오로 보았으며, 증오에 이르는 길로서 점수가 요청되는 과정으로 설명하고 있다. 증오 또한 결국 견성성불과 성불제중이라는 대승 수행의 길을 밟아나가야 한다는 점에서 보면 돈오점수의 과정으로 볼 수 있다. 원불교 수행을 돈점 삼문(三門)중 어느 하나라고 단정 짓기는 어렵다. 수행의 과정상 중생의 보편적 수행문으로 점수돈오가 제시되기도 하고, 최상근기자를 위해 돈오돈수가 수용되어 원융한 수행체계를 형성하고 있다. 다만 교리사상 전반을 살펴볼 때 수행체계의 주된 흐름은 돈오점수가 매우 강조된다. 소태산은 돈오를 뜻하는 견성의 필요성에 대해 강조하지만 견성으로 그쳐서는 안 된다고 한다. 깨달음 이후에 성불을 향한 닦음이 필요함을 역설하고 있는 것이다. 즉 돈오점수의 목우행을 통해 성불에 이르고, 더 나아가 제생의세를 수행의 최종목표로 제시하고 있다. ‘돈오점수’가 수행의 정로로 자리할 수 있는 이유는 보편적이며 대중적 수행의 길이라는 점이다. 한편 원불교에서 말하는 깨달음은 인간의 본성뿐만 아니라 우주의 이치, 더 나아가 인간의 삶의 영역까지 그 대상으로 삼는 특징이 있다. 그 배경으로는 후천개벽시대에 요청되는 깨달음, 유·불·도 삼교회통으로서의 깨달음의 요청, 사실적인 깨달음 요청 등으로 정리할 수 있다. 이러한 깨달음과 수행의 노력은 결국 감사와 보은불공으로 나아가야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the reason why the system of Won Buddhist practice is "gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment". Sotaesan includes "secrets on cultivating mind" in <Buddhist Sutra> because he is aware of falling into void quiescence after sudden enlightenment and emphasized to find the right path after awakening. In Korean Buddhism, there have been many heated debates between "gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment" and "sudden cultivation upon sudden enlightenment". It is connected with judgement of the state of enlightenment. Chinul considers "sudden enlightenment" as the awakening and explains that "gradual cultivation" is required to accomplish one`s study of knowing and practicing. Also, it can be considered as the process of gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment in terms of mahayana practice such as "seeing one`s original nature and attaining buddhahood" and "attaining buddhahood and delivering sentient beings".
It is hard to categorize Won Buddhist practice into suddenness and gradualness`s three ways. As the process of practice, "sudden enlightenment after gradual cultivation" is suggested as the general way of practice for the ordinary practitioner, and "sudden cultivation upon sudden enlightenment" is accepted for the highest spiritual capacity. In main stream of the doctrine, "gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment is strongly emphasized in the system of Won Buddhist practice. Although Sotaesan stresses the importance of seeing one`s original nature which means sudden enlightenment, he warns ending up only seeing one`s original nature. The need of practice for attaining buddhahood after enlightenment is very important. Through gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment, we can attain buddhahood and further deliver sentient beings as the final goal.
Gradual cultivation after sudden enlightenment is considered as the right path for the practice, because it is universal and accessible to the people. In Won Buddhism, enlightenment is not only about the original nature but also the principle of the universe and further human life. It provides the background to enlightenment that is requested in the time of great opening, enlightenment that synthesizes the three religions(Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism) and enlightenment which is realistic. We need to go forward a life of gratitude and make buddha offerings through enlightenment and the effort of practice.
