法認精神으로 본 원불교의 종교적 정체성 (The Religious identity of Won-Buddhism Viewed from the Spirit of the Prayers at the Mountains for the Dharma Authentication)

초록

원불교에서는 소태산의 아홉 제자가 창생을 제도하기 위해 목숨을 걸고 기도를 올린 법인기도를 원불교의 종교적 뿌리로 삼고 있다. 본고는 원불교 ‘교화’의 정신이 바로 이 법인기도에서 비롯된다고 생각하면서, 원불교의 새로운 지향점에 대해 근본에서 다시 점검하고자 한다.
최근 원불교의 법인기도에 대한 관심은 지나치게 ‘백지혈인(白旨血印)’이라는 신비현상에 경도되어 있다. 논자는 이러한 현상을 법인기도에 대한 정신성의 망각에서 비롯된 결과라고 본다. 따라서 소태산과 구인제자가 창생을 제도하겠다는 서원으로 올린 기도는 백지혈인의 결과보다 실제로 기도가 이루어졌던 과정과 기도가 끝난 후 소태산이 법명과 법호를 주는 내용에서 더 중요한 의의를 발견할 필요가 있다.
곧 소태산은 기도를 올리는 중간에 구인제자에게 여전히 ‘사념(私念)’이 남아 있다는 것을 질책하였고, 또 기도를 끝낸 후 소태산은 제자들에게 법명과 법호를 주면서 ‘그대들의 전날 이름은 개인의 사사(私私) 이름이었던 바, 그 이름을 가진 사람은 이미 죽었고, 이제 세계 공명(公名)의 새 이름을 주어 다시 살리노니 삼가 받들어 가져서 창생을 제도하라’고 했던 내용은 법인기도가 ‘나(我)’라는 분별적 관념과 집착을 다 내려놓고 오직 ‘공(公)’에 합일하는 정신을 체득할 것을 가르친 수행이었음을 알 수 있다.
따라서 논자는 법인정신이 원불교 정체성이 ‘무아(無我)’를 실현하고 그 정신을 세상에 실천해 가는 운동이라는 점을 새롭게 자각하고, 원불교 ‘교화’가 이러한 정신성을 바탕으로 재정비 될 필요가 있다는 것을 주장하였다.

영어초록

Won-Buddhism takes the prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication by the nine disciples of Sotaesan at the risk of their lives to save sentient beings as the religious root of Won-Buddhism. Regarding that the spirit of ‘edification’ of Won-Buddhism is originated from these prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication, this thesis aims to re-examine the new directing point of the edification of Won-Buddhism.
Recently, the interest in the prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication of Won-Buddhism is leaning too much towards a mysterious phenomenon called ‘Fingerprints of Blood’. The author views that this phenomenon is the result caused by the oblivion of the spirituality of the prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication. Therefore, regarding the prayers by Sotaesan and his nine disciples to save sentient beings, it would be necessary to pay more attention to the actual process of performing the prayers and the contents in which Sotaesan gave Buddhist names to them after the prayers, rather than the result of Fingerprints of Blood.
In the middle of the prayers, Sotaesan reprimanded the nine disciples for still having ‘consciousness of self’, and after the prayers, Sotaesan gave Buddhist names to them and said, ‘Your name, which has been used before, is a worldly name and a name for an individual, You may suppose that you who have been called by the worldly name have died, but are reborn with this universal Dharma name. Do your best to save numerous sentient beings from suffering by using this Dharma name.’. This shows that ‘the prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication’ was the asceticism for acquiring the spirit united with the ‘universal’ after putting down all the differential ideas and obsessions about ‘myself’.
Therefore, the author argued that it would be necessary to newly recognize that the spirit of the prayers at the mountains for the dharma authentication is a movement for realizing ‘selflessness’ as the identity of Won-Buddhism and also practising the spirit in the world, and also to reorganize the ‘edification’ of Won-Buddhism based on this spirituality.
