In comparing overlapping handwritten Manchu texts of the volume Di地 in Manchu script without dots and circles and the volume supplementtwo 滿附二 in Manchu script with dots and circles of “Original ManchuArchives” 滿文原檔(early seventeenth century), it is shown that the wordweri- ‘to leave, to keep back’ is spelled as üwari- in the volume Di, whilein the volume supplement two the same word in the near-duplicated textcan be seen in the form weri-. In addition the same text in “Man-wen Laodang”滿文老檔(late eighteenth century) in the Qian-Lung 乾隆 period givesthe word in the form uwara- {ufara- in Möllendorff’s transcription} whichmeans ‘to lose’. It is not clear whether the spelling uwara- {ufara-} is aresult of intentional change or by mistaking the already unusual spellingüwari- for uwara- {ufara-}.
The syllable wi {fi} is spelled as bi in earlier stages. In the history ofManchu, former p changed into f, early except before i, later before all thevowels. The spelling bi whose later reflex is wi represents the unchangedform [pi], while bi whose later reflex is bi must has been for [bi]. Whatshould be noted is that in the same Di volume the syllable wi cannot beseen but the syllable bi is used instead in the overlapping texts while inthe non-overlapping texts of the same Di volume the syllable wi, not a bi,occurs. In the volume supplement two the syllable wi can be seen both inthe overlapping texts and in the non-overlapping texts. It follows that, inrespect of the distribution of wi, overlapping texts and non-overlappingtexts in the Di volume are heterogeneous, while in the volume supplementtwo the overlapping and non-overlapping texts are homogeneous. Fromthis fact the process of the formation of the three, the proto-overlappingpart, the volume Di, and the supplement two, can be inferred.
