한승원의 원체험과 소설화 과정 고찰 (A Study on the Original Experiences and Novelization Processes of Han Seung-Won)

초록

한승원은 가부장적인 엄부를 두려워하고 물웅덩이에 빠져 죽을 뻔하던 자신의 원체험을 작품 속에 형상화했다. 작가의 작품들에서 모순적 존재로 서의 아버지와의 갈등·립은 화해하려고 해도 화해되지 않는 관계로 그려 지며 이는 곧 민족의 삶과 역사, 우주적 갈등·립으로 확장되었다. 또한 혼자 물놀이를 하다가 죽을 뻔했던 어릴 때의 물과 죽음에 한 공포는 작가 의 소설화 과정 속에서 현실 상에 한 극복의 의지로 작용하다. 작가를 지배한 모순적 존재인 아버지와 물 무섬증은 그로 하여금 평생 소설을 쓰도 록 하는 화두로 작용했다. 이러한 원체험은 작가의 삶에서 어둠, 즉 그림자로 작용했고 작가는 그것을 소설을 통해 빛으로 끌어올리고자 하다. 따라서 한승원의 소설 쓰기는 어둠을 감지하고 그것을 빛으로 승화시키고자 하는 끊임없는 시도다. 작가는 자신에게 드리워진 그림자의 어두운 면과 파괴적인 면을 직시하여 빛과 창조의 세계로 나아가고자 하으며 개인의 삶에 서 점차 사회 역사 우주로 확장시켜 나갔다. 엄부 아래서 성장했던 한승원의 무의식 속에는 아버지가 없었으면 좋겠다 는 생각과 보호막으로서 인정받고 싶다는 생각이 동시에 싹트고 있었다. 작 가는 비록 드러내놓고 저항을 하지는 못했지만 소설을 통해 아버지와의 관 계를 모색하다. 한승원은 엄부의 모습에서 점차 모순된 존재로서의 무력 함을 인식하면서 이에 저항하고 극복해 나갔다. 작가는 이후의 작품에서 립적인 입장에 놓인 아버지와 아들이 끊임없이 갈등·립하는 것을 형상화 하는데 그 중심에는 ‘아버지 찾기’와 ‘아버지 극복하기’의 딜레마가 깊이 스 며들어 있다. 인간은 모순된 존재로 아버지의 보호를 받고 싶다는 측면과 그로부터 벗어나 자유롭고 싶다는 측면을 동시에 지니는데 작가는 이러한 양식이 인간의 억눌림과 자유의 문제로 이어진다고 보았다. 여기서 아버지 찾기는 한걸음 다른 쪽으로 나아가는데 작가는 이 단계에서 아버지 찾기를 사회 역사와 연관시켰다. 우리 사회와 역사가 올바른 쪽으로 나아가고 있느 냐의 여부를 탐색했던 것이다 . 한승원은 어린 시절 물에 빠져 죽을 뻔하던 체험과 청년시절 생계유지 를 위한 바다 체험을 통해 물과 바다가 지닌 양면성을 인식하다. 바다는 그의 전 작품을 관통하고 있는데 바다가 지닌 양면성의 세계에서 작가는 체로 삶보다는 죽음에, 원초적 생명력보다는 동물적 잔인성과 폭력성에 더욱 큰 비중을 두었다. 전쟁이나 산업화에 따른 폐해, 혹은 본능적 충동에 의한 파괴적 행동 등 어둠과 죽음이 전체적 배경으로 깔리는 것은 작가가 드러내 고자 하는 주제 혹은 의도의 측면에서 연관지어 생각해 볼 수 있다. 그가 어둠과 죽음을 작품 전면에 드러내는 것은 그에 항하는 인간의 극복의지 를 중시하기 때문이다. 작가는 작품을 통해 어둠의 상황에 놓인 주인공들의 빛으로 나아가기 위한 처절한 몸부림을 다룬다. 본고에서는 이러한 원체험을 이루는 요소들에 내재해 있는 그림자들이 작 품에서 어떻게 형상화되고 있으며 그것이 이후의 작품에서 어떤 식으로 극 복되어 나아가는지 살펴보았다. 이는 이후 통시적 차원에서 그의 전 생애와 작품 세계를 조명하는 데 있어 새로운 해석의 계기를 마련할 수 있으리라는 점에서 의미가 있다고 보았다.

영어초록

To his works, Han Seung-won projected his original experiences as a child who being almost drowned in water and a boy afraid of his strict father. In his works, conflict and confrontation with a contradictory father is depicted as a irreconcilable one and later these conflict and confrontation are expanded to life and history of Korean people and even to universe. When he was a child, he almost being drown while dabbling in water alone and this momory planted fear of water and death which becomes the drive force of overcomeing in his novelization. The contradictory father and hydrophobia which dominated the writer became key phrase which made him write novels for his whole life. These original experiences worked as darkness and shadow in his life and he tired to make the original experiences as a lunimous one through his novel writing. To Han Seung-won, novel writing is an endless attempt to sense darkness and sublimate it to light. The writer tries to move toward the world of light and creation by facing darkness of the shadow and destructive side in himself, and gradually expanded it from a personal life to society, history, and the universe. Han Seung-won who was raised by a strict father, had two ‘I’ in his subconsiousness. The first one who denying his father did not want a father and the other one admitting his father for protection expected the recongnition from his father. Instead of a apparent resistance, the writer seeks a way to improve the relationship with his father trough his novels. Gradually, Han Seung-won realizes that the strict father is a contrditory weak being and he resisits and overcomes it. In his later works, the writer shows constant conflict and confrontation between a father and a son feuding with each other. In the centre of this relationsihpm, ther is a dilemma between ‘finding father’ and ‘overcoming father’. The writer considers a man as a contradictory being which wants protection by his own father and at the same time, he also want to set himself free from his father’s authority and it is closely related to the oppression and freedom of a man. In next step, the writer connects ‘finding father’ with society and history. The writer investigates if our society and history is proceeding in the right direction. Han Seung-won reconized the ambilaterality of water and sea through his expereince of drowning in childhood and working-class youngster who tried to both ends meet. The ‘sea’ is a consistant major material in all his novels, and in the ambilterality of the sea, he put more weight on ‘death, animal brutality and violence’ than ‘life and primitive life force’. Darkness and deaths such as the evil of a war or industrialization and destructive behavior led by instintive impulse are presented as a background in his novels and we can consider this is closely connected to a subject or an intention which the writer wants to show us. The writer showing darkness and deaths because he values a man’s free will of resistant and overcome. Through his novels, the writer deals with a fierce struggles of characters to lift darkness and to procced toword light. In this thesis, I study how Han Seung-won embodies the shadows which consist of his original experiences and how he overcoms it in his later works. This may provide an opportunity to review his whole life and his works in diachronic point of view.
