원불교 개교정신과 생명질서 (The sprit of foundation of Won-Buddhism and problems of life order)

초록

원불교는 근대 한국에서 少太山 朴重彬(1891-1943) 大宗師에 의해 개창된 종교이다. 소태산의 大覺을 통한 원불교 개교의 과정에는 새로운 시대의 도래에 대한 直觀的 洞察을 찾을 수 있다. 미래 문명의 흐름에 관해 後天開闢 시대의 到來라는 독특한 시대인식을 제시한 것이 그것이다. 이러한 시대인식에 바탕하여 발달한 과학문명을 적극적으로 수용하고 동양의 전통 사상을 계승, 이를 주체적으로 재해석해냄으로써 새로운 가치질서를 정립하려고 노력하였다.
소태산은 밝은 文明時代에는 인간과 천지 만물에 대한 바른 인식에 바탕하여 성숙한 문명이 열릴 것이라고 보았다. 우주 내에서의 인간의 위치에 대해 올바로 自覺함에 따라 자신의 존재 의의와 역할에 대해 새로운 안목을 얻게 되어 진정한 人間尊重의 시대가 열리고 生命과 自然이 調和를 이룬다는 것이다.
소태산은 개체의 생존은 다른 존재와의 相生과 調和의 관계를 통해서만 유지될 수 있음을 천명하였다. 그는 모든 존재가 서로 없어서는 살 수 없는 근본적 은혜의 관계임을 통찰하고 인간은 自覺의 정도에 따라 그 근원적 은혜를 알아 報恩함으로써 자신의 본성을 실현할 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 입장은 불교의 緣起論에 근거하는 것으로 이해되기도 하나, 동시에 동아시아의 生哲學的 전통과 관련하여 그 의미를 파악할 필요가 있다.
이러한 근원적 은혜와 감사 보은의 삶은 결국 모두가 부처(處處佛像)라는 신앙으로 이어지고 이에 천지만물 모두에게 부처님에게 불공하는(事事佛供) 敬畏心을 가지고 대하는 삶이 요청된다. 나아가 소태산은 인간 완성의 궁극의 경지를 ‘心和･氣和’라는 톡특한 개념을 제시하였다. 주체적으로 지극히 고양된 인격이 객체와의 관계에서 순화된 마음과 기운으로 同和하여 無爲而化한 가운데 感化를 이루자는 것이다. 궁극적 진리의 내재적 가능태인 본성 회복을 통한 무한 가능성의 실현과 心和･氣和의 純化된 感化力으로 근본적 은혜를 자각하고 감사 보은하는 處處佛像･事事佛供의 삶이 소태산이 제시하는 새로운 생명･질서의 대체적 내용이라고 말할 수 있다.

영어초록

Won-Buddhism was founded in modern Korea by Sotaesan Pak Joong-bin, Founding Master. Through the founding progress of Won-Buddhist order based on his enlightenment we can find out his view of coming up a new age.
He presented an unique viewpoint that the epoch of great open society will arrive in near future. Based on this cognition, He did his best endeavors to set up the new value order through the reinterpretation of oriental traditional thoughts. He also stressed we must receive the developed scientific civilization positively.
Sotaesan thought that full matured and bright civilization in new future will come up and correct thought on the status of human being in the universe will widely spread in society .
It means that people will be able to acquire new eyes for the role and significant of human being and awaken their real position in this universe. Futhermore we will achieve the new age of civilization in which the dignity of human being are rightly respected and all beings in the world can alive in harmonious connection with each other.
Sotaesan clarified an individual existence can maintain it's life only through the spirit of co-existence and harmony with others. He knew
the fundamental relationship all existence cannot be and live without others. Every one can recover his original good nature only through awakening the Grace and gratitude to it. We can say this view is based on Buddhist theory of 연기, but it is necessary to understand the deep meaning of this thought by considering the east Asian tradition of 'philosophy of universal life'.
This life of graceful gratitude leads every person to the faith that all things we see in the universe are nothing but Buddhas. Therefore, at all times and in all places we must be very respectful and cautious toward all things, keeping a pure mind and a pious manner, as if we were before the real Buddha. Besides, Sotaesan showed an unique thoughtthattheultimategoal of personal growth is ShimHwa-ChiHwa.
It aims at the cultivation of personality by making mind and chi harmoniously and furthermore the establishment of a harmonious and complete society. It heads toward exerting a good influence on their neighbors and society. In the end highly matured personality can assimilate with the object by purified mind and vitality.
The way of life, and new order of Being suggested by Sotaesan can desummarized into three aspects; Firstly realizing the unlimited possibility by recovering one´s original good nature, the internal potentialitiesofthe ultimate truth.
Secondly awakening the fundamentalgraceandgratitudeto it andliving based on ShimHwa-ChiHwa which means exerting a good influence on their neighbors and society by purified mind and vitality.
Thirdly realizing the idea of "Everywhere a Buddha Image, Every Act a Buddha Offering true".
