초록

1948년 을유문화사에서 출간된 김용준의 『근원수필(近園隨筆)』은 많은 예술가들이 애장하고 싶어 하는도서 중 하나다. 간결한 문체로 이루어진 30편의 수필들은 김용준이 미술가일뿐만 아니라 빼어난 문장가였음을 잘 보여준다. 그런데 『근원수필』을 수필문학 장르로 한정해서 읽는다면 김용준 예술세계를 제대로 음미할 수 없다. 『근원수필』의 저작 의도를 이해하기 위해서는 텍스트는 물론, 표지화와 본문의 삽화 등 시각이미지들을 함께 분석해야 한다. 이 글은 『근원수필』이 “미술론과 문학을 결합시킨 퓨전 에세이”이자 이미지와 활자매체의 특성을 치밀하게 계산하여 만든 출판물이라는 점에 주목하여 시각이미지를 중심으로 분석한 것이다.
『근원수필』은 식민지 문화의 청산과 민족문화의 재건이라는 시대적 요청에 힘입어 출판 활동이 활발했던 해방기에 출간되었다. 김용준의 골동 취미를 비롯해 소소한 일상과 자연을 소재로 쓴 이 수필집에는 민족문화를 지키며 순수하게 예술을 즐기고자 하나 화단에서도, 교육자로서도 설 자리가 마땅치 않았던 ‘답답한 현실’을 배경으로 하고 있다. 또한 1930년대부터 김용준이 많은 책을 장정하며 다져진 심미안과 『문장(文章)』지 편집자로서 축적된 편집미학, 전통미술에 대한 깊은 애정과 해박한 미술사적 지식이 바탕이 되었다. 그런 점에서 『근원수필』은 격조 높은 수필문학 작품일 뿐만 아니라 민족미술의 정체성에 대한 김용준의 진지한 탐색을 엿볼 수 있는 저작이라 할 수 있다.
또한 『근원수필』은 김용준의 일상의 반영인 동시에 고전에 대한 관심을 시각이미지로 잘 융합시킨 출판물이라는 점에서도 중요한 가치가 있다. 관상용 난초를 소재로 한 먹그림으로 시작해, 1946년 경주에서 새롭게 발굴된 호우총에서 나온 ‘광개토왕 호우’의 금문(金文)으로 대미(大尾)를 장식한 표지, 서화의 아취가 느껴지는 삽화와 활자와 여백이 어우러진 지면(紙面) 등 『근원수필』은 시서화 일치를 최고의경지로 여겼던 문인화처럼 이미지와 텍스트가 일체화되어 있다. 이렇게 일상에서 접하던 분란(盆蘭)을묵란화로 재창조하고, 호태왕비문의 예서체 글씨로 표지 제자(題字)와 뒤표지를 장식한 것은 그가 최고의 고전으로 삼았던 추사 김정희의 고예(古隷) 정신을 계승하고자 했음을 보여준다. 『근원수필』에 드러나는 이러한 면은 서양화로 출발했으나, 1930년대 후반부터 동양화에 천착하면서 세속과 거리를 둔 문사(文士)로서 자의식을 지녔던 김용준의 삶과 예술관에서 연유한다. 그런 점에서 자신의 지식과 감각을총동원해서 직접 장정하고, 자신의 일상과 고전에 대한 관심을 담은 『근원수필』은 김용준의 자화상 같은책이라 할 수 있다.
그러나 재간행된 『근원수필』에는 텍스트만 남기고 이미지는 모두 제거하거나, 이미지의 배치가 달라지면서 김용준이 의도했던 활자매체의 시각적 특성이 사라졌다. 『근원수필』을 수필문학의 텍스트가 아닌 물질로, 시각이미지를 중심으로 분석한 이 글은 근대 출판물의 시각이미지를 어떻게 다루고, 연구할것인지 다시 생각해보는 계기가 될 것이다.

영어초록

Various research on Kim Yong-jun has been carried out in such a wide-ranging fields as literature, art history, art education, or book art. This is probably because Kim had been active not only as a painter, but also as an art theorist, an educator, and a book designer. Since Keunwon Essay(近園隨 筆) was published by Eulyoo Munwhasa in 1948, the book has been acknowledged as one of the best Korean contemporary literary essays; and thus essayists have been mostly leading the research on Kim. However, for a good grasp of Keunwon Essay, the analyses must be taken on images as well as on texts - such as the cover-page and the book’s general illustrations. This article thus seeks to focus on the images from Keunwon Essay.
Keunwon Essay was published during the liberation period of Korea when the publishing industry was active in response to the demands of the liquidation of colonial culture and the reconstruction of culture. This collection of essays (which mostly deals with Kim’s antique hobbies, the trivial events in everyday life, and writings on nature) reflect the ‘stifling reality’ where neither an artist nor an educator could survive even with the intention of purely enjoying the arts while preserving the national culture. In addition, many writings from Keunwon Essay were based upon his eyes for beauty that could be developed while binding many books from the 1930s on, his own editorialistic aesthetics coming from his experiences as an editor for the Munjang magazine, and his commitment to the teachings of Kim Jong Hee (whom he regarded as classic).
In a way Keunwon Essay is like a self-portrait with Kim’s own story containing his knowledge and sensibilities. The magnificent writing - not to mention the cover page with the orchid drawing as well as the metal epigraph of Howoochong (one of Korea’s ancient tombs), and the paper on which there is great harmony among the illustration, the type and a margin - were altogether a great artwork. The cover-page illustration of Keunwon Essay, which consists of a literati-style ink drawing and etching, is based on Kim’s great affection for traditional arts as well as his broad knowledge of art history.
Moreover, several illustrations in the text work beyond their role of explaining and supporting texts; rather, they can be regarded as the formative elements of the text. At this juncture, it is also important that Keunwon Essay is a publication of reflection of Kim’s everyday life and is successfully integrated his interest in classics into visual images.
However, in its re-published version, the visual characteristics of the typeface from Keunwon Essay that Kim intended have disappeared―with its changes in the placement of the images or by including the text alone. This paper, which examines both the text and the images altogether, therefore intends to let the reader contemplate the method of understanding and research images within modern publications.
