초록

이 논문의 목적은 크게 두 가지이다. 하나는 워필드가 모더니즘 시대에서 신학적 변증을 어떻게 했는지 살피는 것이고, 다른 하나는 포스트모더니즘 시대를 지나면서 워필드의 신학이 우리에게 여전히 유의미함을 제시하는 것이다.
먼저, 19세기 모더니즘 시대라는 맥락에서 워필드가 성경의 영감을 변증하고자 했던 시도를 살펴볼 것이다. 워필드의 시도는 우리에게 두 가지 신학적 함의를 준다. 첫째, 워필드는 그 시대의 언어를 사용할 줄 알았다. 19세기 내재성과 범신론이라는 철학적/신학적 도전은 성경의 초자연적/신적 요소들을 제거하며 성경의 권위를 깎았다. 워필드는 철학적이고 신학적 도전의 성격과 본질을 잘 간파했고, 그 언어를 가지고 성경의 영감과 권위를 옹호했다. 둘째, 워필드는 정통적인 개혁신학의 틀 속에서 모더니즘의 방법론을 취했다. 다시 말해서, “인식론적 토대주의” 내지는 “객관과 주관의 이분법”이라는 모더니즘의 방법론을 활용하여, 성경의 객관적 권위와 인식론적 토대를 확보했다.
다음으로, 포스트모더니즘 시대에도 워필드의 신학적 변증이 유의미함을 제시할 것이다. 오늘날 포스트모더니즘 시대에 모더니즘 전반에 대한 비판과 전환이 있었다. 워필드의 성경 변증도 모더니즘의 한계에서 이루어진 신학이라는 비판을 받았다. 포스트모더니즘을 극복하는 신학적 대안이 시도되면서 성경의 권위와 교회의 삶을 동시에 강조하는 것이 중요한 신학적 요소로 제시되었다. 필자는 워필드의 신학에서 이러한 요소들을 재발견하고자 한다. 특히 성경 영감의 방법을 “협력” 개념으로 설명하는 워필드의 성경론을 통해서 말씀의 권위와 실천 문제가 어떻게 강조되고 있는지 찾아보고자 한다. 워필드의 “협력” 개념은 성경 영감뿐만 아니라 구원, 성화 등에서 하나님과 인간의 합력적인 사역을 강조한다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 하나님의 주권적 통치와 함께 인간의 참여와 책임도 강조할 수 있는 신학적 틀을 제시할 것이다.
본 연구를 통해 오늘날 우리에게 필요한 것이 어떤 새로운 신학이 아니라, 종교개혁을 계승하는 개혁신학의 전통 안에서 우리 신앙의 핵심인 성경의 영감과 권위를 충분히 변증할 수 있다는 태도임이 드러날 것이다. 워필드 서거 100주년에 즈음하여 워필드의 성경 영감론이 포스트모더니즘의 비판을 극복할 수 있는 변증적 시도로 오늘날에도 유의미함이 드러날 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is largely twofold. One is to look at how Warfield performed theological dialectics in the modern era, and the other is to suggest that Warfield’s theology remains significant to us throughout the post-modern era.
First, we will look at Warfield’s attempt to apologize the Biblical inspiration in the context of the 19th-century modernist era. Warfield’s attempt gives us two theological implications. Most of all, Warfield knew how to use the language of the time. The philosophical/theological challenges of 19th-century immanentism and pantheism undermined the authority of the Bible, eliminating the supernatural/divine elements of the Bible. Warfield saw through the nature and nature of philosophical and theological challenges and defended the inspiration and authority of the Bible with the language. Second, Warfield adopted modernist methodology in the framework of orthodox reform theology. In other words, the modernist methodology of “epistemological foundationalism” or “dichotomy of object and subjectivity” has been used to secure the objective authority and epistemological foundation of the Bible.
Next, Warfield’s theological dialectic will be significant even in the postmodernist era. As a theological alternative to overcoming postmodernism was attempted, emphasizing the authority of the Bible and the life of the church at the same time was presented as an important theological element. I seek to rediscover these elements in Warfield’s theology. In particular, we want to find out how the authority and practice of the Word are emphasized through Warfield’s biblical theory, which explains the way of biblical inspiration with the concept of “cooperation.” Warfield’s concept of “cooperation” emphasizes the combined ministry of God and man in salvation and sanctification as well as biblical inspiration. Based on this understanding, it will present a theological framework that can emphasize human participation and responsibility along with God’s sovereign rule.
This study will reveal that what we need today is not some new theology, but that we can sufficiently demonstrate the inspiration and authority of the Bible, the core of our faith, in the tradition of the Reform theology that inherits religious reform. On the 100th anniversary of Warfield’s death, Warfield’s biblical inspiration will still be a dialectical attempt to overcome the criticism of postmodernism.
