워케이션 업무공간의 물리적 환경 특성에 관한 연구 (The Physical Work Environment in Workation Workplaces)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 코로나19 이후 원격근무가 확산하면서 근로자가 원하는 곳에서 일상적인 업무를 수행하면서 휴가를 동시에 보낼 수 있는 일(work)과 휴가(vacation)의 합성어인 워케이션(workation) 업무 형태가 성행하게 되었다. 워케이션 업무 형태는 업무의 생산성과 창의성을 향상시키고 근무자의 스트레스 완화에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다고 한다. 워케이션에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있는 반면에 워케이션 업무공간의 물리적 환경에 관한 심층적인 연구가 아직 부족하다. 그리하여 본 연구는 현시점의 워케이션 작업환경의 물리적 환경 특성을 국내외 워케이션 업무공간 사례분석을 통하여 탐색하고자 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 워케이션 오피스 전용으로 사용하고 있는 공간을 확보하고 있으면서 인지도가 있는 국내외 워케이션 업무공간 사례들을 분석하였다. 워케이션의 물리적 환경을 분석하는 기준을 설정하기 위하여 사무공간에서 창의성을 증진시키는 공간 요소들에 관한 선행연구들을 바탕으로 키워드들을 추출하고 분석의 틀을 마련하였다. 업무공간의 특성을 분석하는 틀은 공간 레이아웃(접근성, 개방성, 가변성, 사적 영역성, 다양성), 공간 타입(관계형, 휴게형), 공간연출 방법(독창성, 심미성), 환경적 요소(전망, 친환경성), 기술 등의 지원 요소로 분류된다. 이 분석의 틀을 바탕으로 워케이션 업무공간을 평가하고, 공통으로 반영한 공간 계획 요소를 도출하였다. (결과) 본 연구에서 파악된 워케이션 업무공간의 물리적 환경 특성은 업무공간이 공간 구성원 간의 교류와 협력을 촉진하는 개방형 구조이고 자연적인 마감 소재를 활용하거나 따뜻한 계열의 색채를 통한 편안한 공간을 연출하고 독특한 형태의 가구 또는 그래픽 등을 활용하여 심미적인 공간 창출하고 있다. 또한 워케이션 업무공간은 넓은 창을 통해 외부 조망을 확보하고 실내 조경, 자연광 유입, 테라스를 통한 자연과의 접근성을 높이는 친환경적인 성격을 강하게 지니고 있다. 안정된 인터넷, 업무의 효율을 높이는 사무용 기기들과 화상회의 및 일반회의를 적극적으로 할 수 있는 풍부한 기술적 자원이 지원되는 특징이 강하게 나타났다. (결론) 워케이션 업무공간의 특성을 살펴본 결과 협업을 촉진하는 개방형 레이아웃, 환경친화적인 공간연출, 풍부한 기술 자원과 같은 주요 특성을 확인하였다. 이는 향후 워케이션 공간을 계획할 때 고려해야 할 물리적 환경 요소들에 대한 기초 디자인 가이드라인을 형성하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

(Background and Purpose) Workation, a combination of work and vacation, is a new workplace trend that has rapidly gained popularity after COVID-19 pandemic. As remote work and flexible scheduling become increasingly prevalent, Workation has emerged as a strategic approach to enhance productivity, foster creativity, and alleviate stress among employees. Despite the increasing interest in Workation, there remains a notable gap in research concerning the physical environment of Workation workplaces. Therefore, this study aims to explore the physical characteristics of Workation work environments at the present time through a comprehensive analysis of domestic and international case studies of Workation workspace. (Method) This study analyzed 5 type of domestic and international Workation workplaces that have dedicated spaces exclusively for Workation and have garnered recognition. To establish a framework for analyzing the physical environment of Workation, keywords were extracted from previous studies on spatial elements that enhance creativity in office spaces. The framework for analyzing workspace characteristics is classified into spatial layout (accessibility, openness, variability, privacy, diversity), space types (relational, recreational), spatial presentation methods (originality, aesthetics), environmental factors (views, eco-friendliness), and technological support (technological tools). Based on this analysis framework, Workation workplaces were evaluated using space images, floor plans, and space descriptions available on the Workation website. By examining these elements, common spatial planning features were identified, contributing to a deeper understanding of the physical characteristics of Workation environments. (Results) The findings regarding the physical environmental characteristics of Workation workplaces identified in this study include an open-plan layout that promotes interaction and collaboration among occupants, with fewer private spaces provided. Additionally, Workation spaces prioritize comfort and aesthetics by incorporating natural finishes, warm color schemes, and unique furnishings to create inviting and visually appealing environments. Moreover, a strong emphasis on eco-friendliness is evident, with features such as wide windows for external views, indoor plants, natural lighting, and access to nature by the outdoor terraces contributing to a sustainable and refreshing work atmosphere. Lastly, the Workation workplace provides stable internet connections, office equipment such as large monitors that enhance work efficiency, and abundant technological resources for video conferencing and general meetings. (Conclusions) This study explored the physical aspects of Workation work environments, which have emerged as a growing trend during the rise of remote work prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It identified key characteristics such as open layouts fostering collaboration, eco-friendly features, and ample technological resources. These findings offer valuable insights for designing optimal Workation workplaces.
