웅진기 백제와 왜국의 교류 (Exchange between Baekje and Wa during the Woongjin period)

초록

웅진기는 백제와 왜국이 본격적으로 관계를 맺은 시기였다. 웅진 초기 동성왕 대는 왜왕武가 對宋외교에서 자칭한 ‘諸軍事’호 문제 및 왜국 내부의 혼란한 상황으로 인해 양국 관계가 소원했다. 이후 무령왕은 왜국과 교섭을 재개하기 위해 태자인 斯我君(純陀)을 파견했다. 그 궁극적 목적은 백제가 가야지역으로 진출하기 위해서였다. 이 과정에서 백제는 伴跛國(대가야)과 충돌했지만, 왜국에 오경박사 등 선진문물을 전수하면서 군사적 지원을 이끌어냈다.
이렇듯 백제가 왜국과 교류를 활발히 전개할 수 있었던 것은 이미 4~5세기 단계부터 서해 남부지역까지 진출하면서 교통로와 기항지, 그리고 거점을 확보하고 있었기 때문이다.
웅진기 백제와 왜국 사이의 항로는 크게 서남해 연안항로와 서남해 사단항로가 있었다. 서남해 연안항로는 백제가 한성기 때부터 이용해 오던 가장 안정적인 항로로서 웅진기 전반에걸쳐 이용되었다. 서남해 사단항로는 영산강 하구와 해남ㆍ강진, 그리고 여수ㆍ고흥반도 등에서 출항하여 對馬島를 거치지 않고 곧바로 대한해협을 건너면 큐슈 서북부나 중부지역에도착하는 항로였다.
이 시기 백제의 선박은 돛과 노를 장착한 準構造船 또는 구조선 단계까지 발전했을 것으로 여겨진다. 두 척의 배를 연결한 船舫을 운영하였다는 기록이 보이며, 百濟舶이라는 용어를 통해서 당시 백제는 원거리 항해가 가능한 선박조건을 갖추고 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 이때백제가 북큐슈 지역이나 近畿지역까지 가는 도중에는 뱃길 안내 및 물자조달 역할을 했던왜국의 海人의 존재가 주목된다왜국으로 건너 간 오경박사는 유교문화를 토대로 새로운 지식ㆍ정보를 보급하는 창구역할을 수행했다. 이들이 왜국 사회에 미친 영향력, 변혁의 힘은 왜국의 정치ㆍ문화ㆍ사상적으로 큰 변화를 몰고 왔다. 왜국 내 和風諡號의 사용, 의례의 정착, 문자기록의 정착은 왜왕권이 백제의 유교(禮)를 통한 왕위계승 정당성을 강조함과 동시에 선진적인 정신문화를 정착시키는 길을 지향한 결과였다.
양국의 교류에서 왜국 내 백제계 이주민들의 역할 또한 주목할 부분이 많다. 당시 고대일본의 선진문물의 창구였던 河內(大阪)지역에는 많은 백제계 이주민들이 집단적으로 정착하고 있었다. 繼體王은 즉위 전부터 백제계 이주민들의 도움을 받으며 세력을 확장했고, 즉위 후에도 권력기반을 안정시키는 데 이들과 백제문화에 크게 의존했다. 아울러 왜국 내부의 정치적 네트워크 구축을 위한 수단으로 백제의 위세품을 적극적으로 받아들였다. 백제또한 이주민들과 관계를 유지하고자 선진문물이나 위세품 등을 주도적으로 전하면서 공동체의식을 강조했다. 이는 모두 웅진기 백제와 왜국이 정치ㆍ문화적으로 활발한 교류를 전개할 수 있었던 역사적 배경으로 이해해 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

During the Woongjin period, Baekje and Wa established a full-fledged relationship.
In the time of King Dongseong, relations between the two countries were estranged due to the issue of the ‘The Chief Controller Who Has Military Supremacies’ called King Mu himself in diplomacy with the Song Dynasty, and the chaotic situation within the Wa.
Afterwards, King Muryeong dispatched his prince Saagun(Sunta) to resume negotiations with Wa. The ultimate purpose was for Baekje to advance into the Gaya region. In the process, Baekje came into conflict with Daegaya, but he drew military support by passing on advanced literature such as the Five-Classics Savant to Wa.
The reason why Baekje was able to actively develop exchanges with Wa was that it had already advanced to the southern part of the West Sea from the 4th~5th century stage, securing transportation routes, ports of call, and bases. The sea route between Baekje and Wa was largely divided into the Southwest Sea Coastal Route and the South Sea Direct Route. First of all, the coastal route to the Southwest Sea was the most stable route that Baekje had used since the Hanseong period, and it was used throughout the Woongjin period. Next, the South Sea Direct Route was to sail from the Yeongsan River, Haenam and Gangjin, Yeosu and Goheung Peninsulas, and to cross the Korean Strait directly without passing Tsushima to arrive in the northwestern or central part of Kyushu.
It is believed that Baekje’s ships during this period developed to semi-structured vessels or fully structured vessels equipped with sails and oars. There are records that it operated vessels(船舫) that connected two ships, and the term Baekje’s ship suggests Baekje had the conditions to sail for a long time. At this time, on the way to the northern Kyushu and the Kinki, the Kaizin who played the role of guiding the sea route and procuring supplies are noted the Five-Classics Savant who went to Wa, played the role of a window to disseminate new knowledge and information based on Confucian culture to Wa. Their influence on the society and the power of change have brought about great changes in the politics, culture, and ideology of the country. The use of the posthumous name, the establishment of rituals, and the establishment of written records were the result of the Wa dynasty emphasizing the legitimacy of succession to the throne through Confucianism in Baekje and at the same time aiming for the path of establishing an advanced spiritual culture.
The role of Baekje’s migrants in the exchange between the two countries is also noteworthy. At that time, many Baekje’s immigrants were settling in the area of Kawachi, which was the window of advanced culture in ancient Japan. Even before his accession to the throne, King Gyeche expanded his power with the help of Baekje’s migrants. And even after his accession, he relied heavily on them and the Baekje’s culture to stabilize his power base. At the same time, he actively embraced Baekje’s prestige goods as a means of building a political network within the country. Baekje also emphasized a sense of community by taking the initiative to deliver advanced cultural and prestige goods in order to maintain relations with the migrants. This can be understood as the historical background against which Baekje and Wa were able to develop active political and cultural exchanges.
