Ehpads, long-term care facilities in France, provide treatment and care for people over the age of 60 who have difficulties in living independently due to impaired mobility or cognitive dysfunction caused by diseases such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. In 2019, the French administration has dubbed the project “Ehpad du Futur,” recognizing a need for change in their policies toward the elderly, with the knowledge that by 2030, 44% of the population will be over 65 years old. The key to future-type Ehpads is making the nursing home feel like the residents’ own homes (chez soi). The patients’ private hospital rooms are essential in creating “home-like” Ehpads. Therefore, this study proposes an architectural solution for the improvement of individual hospital rooms for Ehpads of the future. This study examines proposals of private hospital rooms in French sanatoriums in the 1920s and 1930s with regard to the development of “home-like” Ehpads. The key to creating a “home-like” nursing facility for older adults can be summarized in two ways, the generalization of private hospital rooms and making these single-person rooms “true dwellings.” Moreover, the sanatoriums are an example of how these two issues were addressed a century ago. As the research methodology, the study conducts comparative analysis between Ehpads and sanatoriums regarding the unit layout of private hospital rooms. To this end, after investigating the problems of Ehpads’ private hospital rooms and deriving the issues needing improvement, the relevant aspects of the sanatorium’s private hospital units are presented as a method to improve Ehpads. Comparing the private room units of Ehpads and sanatoriums, the rooms in sanatoriums have greater dimensional margins in width and area. Therefore, they are advantageous in terms of space differentiation or territorialization and can accommodate various residential functions. In addition, as a climate treatment space, the balconies, which are essentially applied to the personal units of sanatoriums, expand the narrow interior space and allow occupants to gain psychological stability through contact with the external environment, such as natural light, outdoor air, and the outdoor view. Eventually, the case of the personal units in sanatoriums can be presented as a way to design “home-like” individual spaces for future Ehpads.
