For the past few years, a special focus of the Austrian list of Intangible Cultural Heritage was laid on traditional craftsmanship. By the joint inscription of the regional centres for craftsmanship Werkraum Bregenzerwald, Textiles Zentrum Haslach, and HandWerk, Haus Salzkammergut in the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding Practices, these activities have earned international recognition. All of the three centres implement region-specific measures for the safeguarding and creative transmission of craftsmanship knowledge and skills-in a collaborative way.
What principles might we learn from such partnerships in craftsmanship that can be applied to designing, producing and managing life in a common benefit and sustainable way? These are the key issues addressed by the presented example of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald, founded in 1999 by 100 local handicrafts, true to the credo take control of your own future, side by side. Handicraft culture in the region of the Bregenzerwald(a region located in the State of Vorarlberg, Austria) enjoys a rich centuries-old tradition. To this day, human usage and behaviour has formed and changed its cultural landscape, shaped by agriculture, the crafts industry and tourism. As an economic pillar of the region, the association of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald is challenged to adapt to the emerging needs of its members, to use and share technological possibilities and to make the crafts attractive for young people. The establishment of the Werkraum House in 2013, designed by the renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, promotes an identity-forming culture and creates a place of encounter, accessible for all. The most recent project of the Werkraum School is aimed at fostering solidarity between generations, offering good prospects for young people by giving insight to a wide variety of crafts and actively involving elder professionals in the knowledge transfer. All of these are basic measures for peaceful and successful coexistence.
