초록

본고는 아리스토텔레스가 이해하는 비극의 카타르시스를 종래의 주도적 해석들에 대한 검토를 통해 재조명한다. 그 해석들은 카타르시스 이해에 다소간 중요한 기여들을 하면서도, 각자의 입장을 위한 경직성 때문에 한계들도 갖는다: 도덕주의적 해석은 그 한 가지 대표적 노선을 통해 카타르시스가 아리스토텔레스에 의해 이해되는 ‘도덕성’과 연계될 길을 적절히 보여주기는 하나, 카타르시스를 전면적으로 도덕적인 것으로 파악하려는 과도함을 보인다. 도덕주의적 해석을 비판하며 본격화된 의학적 해석은 카타르시스의 ‘감정 치료’ 본성을 적절히 지적하면서도 그것의 ‘도덕성’과의 연관을 무리하게 부인하며, 이 후자의 해석을 비판하며 최근까지 활발히 개진되는 인지주의적 해석은 카타르시스의 ‘인지적’ 기반을 훌륭히 지적하고 때때로 그것의 ‘도덕성’과의 연관도 효과적으로 드러내면서도 그것의 ‘감정적’ 본성에 합당한 비중을 인정하지 않는다. 이 한계들을 극복하면서 이 기여들을 조화롭게 통합할 새로운 관점을 아리스토텔레스의 생각에 부합하게 찾으면서 본고는 카타르시스를 다음과 같이 재해석한다: 그것은 가능한 한 이상적인 플롯으로 재현된 연민스럽고 공포스러운 행위가 적격의 감상자에게 충실히 이해되면서 그의 마음에 연민과 공포를 그 대상에 가능한 한 적합하게 환기함으로써 그가 실생활에서 다소간 부적합하게 느끼던 같은 감정들을 이 감정들의 본성에 가능한 한 적합하게 정련하는 감정적 성과를 낳는 과정이다. 이것은 감상자의 충실한 작품이해를 ‘기반으로’ 연민과 공포를 적합하게 환기하고 정련하면서 감정적 즐거움을 낳는 과정이며, 이 감정적 적합성 덕택에 덕성 형성에도 기여한다. 요컨대, 카타르시스는 인지적 토대를 전제로 도덕성에 기여하는 미적 성취로서 비극이 낳는 가치의 중심이며 이런 한에서 비극의 목적이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to cast a fresh light on the Aristotelian Catharsis of the Tragedy through an examination of the so far prevailing interpretations about the theme. For these interpretations have, despite their more or less important contributions to the discussion about the theme, some shortcomings which result from their stubbornness for their respective positions: Though the moralist interpretation, through a representative line of its exponents, makes clear a dimension rightly in which the catharsis relates to the morality, it proceeds nevertheless unduly in that it takes it in its essential whole as a moral matter; the medical interpretation, which is established for the sake of a criticism on the moralist interpretation, explains the nature of the catharsis as a therapy of emotions certainly well, but denies its relation to the morality unjustly; the cognitivist interpretation, which is being actively developed up to the recent times in a critical position to this latter interpretation, calls our attention to the cognitive basis and sometimes also to the moral significance of the catharsis certainly effectively, but does not consider its emotional nature duly enough. By searching for a new viewpoint, from which it would be possible for us to overcome these shortcomings and at the same time integrate these contributions harmoniously, in accordance with the Aristotelian thinking, this paper tries to interpret the catharsis anew, as follows: It is a process in which a pitiful and fearful action represented in a tragedy as ideally as possible is understood by a competent recipient rightly and arouses thereby pity and fear in his mind as adequately as possible to the nature of the represented object, so that it brings about the emotional effect, that the same emotions in the recipient aroused otherwise more or less inadequately are refined as adequately as possible to the nature of the emotions themselves. It is therefore a process in which the right understanding of the recipient about the represented action works as the basis and from this activity of his mind it results that the pity and the fear are aroused and refined adequately, which is at the same time accompanied by a pleasure; in virtue of this adequateness of arousal and refinement of the emotions, it contributes also to a formation of the morality. Therefore, the catharsis is an aesthetic accomplishment, which contributes to the morality on the condition of the cognitive basis and constitutes in this relation to both the main element of the tragedy’s values, and in this sense its purpose.
