근현대 생활문화 조사와 연구의 방향 -새로운 직종의 등장과 관련하여- (Directions for the Folklore Research on Modern and Contemporary Life Culture -Focusing on the Emergence of New Occupations-)

초록

근현대 생활문화에 대한 민속학적 조사와 연구는 근대 이후 일반인들(common people)의 삶을 대상으로 하여 한국인의 생활사를 구축하려는 작업이다. 하지만 근현대 생활문화 조사와 연구의 대상은 상당히 광범하고 다양하다. 그러므로 이 글에서는 우선적으로 근대 이후 등장한 직종을 중심으로 하여 거기에 종사한 사람들을 대상으로 하는 생활문화 조사 연구를 제안하였다.
근현대 생활문화 조사연구의 대상에 대해서는 4유형으로 제시하였다. (1)전근대사회에 없었던 새로운 물품을 만들었던 사람들의 삶, (2)새로운 도구․기계․설비 등을 도입하여 새로운 방식으로 일했던 사람들의 삶, (3)새로운 매체․도구․물품을 제작 또는 판매․수리하는 사람들의 삶, (4)새로운 제도와 문물로 사람들과 교감했던 사람들의 삶이 그것이다. 구체적으로는 서민들의 삶을 이해하는 데 더 근접된 직종이 우선적인 조사연구 대상으로 선택되어야 할 것이다.
조사과정에서는 새로운 직종에 종사하는 사람들의 일하는 방식과 형태를 중심에 두고 그들의 생활문화를 파악하는 것을 목표로 하자는 제안을 하였다. 민속학에서는 주로 육체노동을 하면서 살아가는 ‘일반인들의 삶의 경험과 인식’을 중요하게 생각하기 때문이다. 따라서 새로운 직종 종사자들의 노동의 방식과 형태를 중심에 두고, 그들의 의식주, 사회관계, 의례, 여가활동 등을 포함하여 조사하면 민속학적․역사학적 의의가 자못 큰 작업이 될 것이다. 자료 분석과정에서는 전통문화가 근대문화 또는 현대문화와 어떻게 만나서 어떤 형태로 지속되고 변화되며, 그와 더불어 근대문화나 현대문화가 어떻게 정착되어 가는지를 중요하게 파악할 필요가 있다. 다시 말하면, 전통문화의 단절, 연속, 구조변동을 포착하면서, 전통–근대-현대의 생활사적 접속과 변동의 논리를 찾아보는 것이 중요하다.
한편, 근대문화와 현대문화에 대해서 문화변동의 측면에서만 주목할 것이 아니라, 한국사회의 근현대문화 도입과 수용 과정에서 어떤 문화적 특성이 드러날 지에 대해서도 주목할 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 세계체제 속에서는 문화다양성 가치를 중요하게 생각해야 하기 때문이다.

영어초록

Folklore research on modern and contemporary life culture aims to establish a cultural history of Koreans based on the life of common people since the modern era. However, there is an extensive and varied range of research subjects for the studies on modern and contemporary life culture. Therefore, this article proposes a life culture research for people engaged in the occupations that emerged after the modern period.
Four types of subjects are presented for the research of modern and contemporary life culture: first, the lives of the people who created goods which did not exist in premodern society; second, the lives of the people who worked in new ways by introducing new tools, machines, and equipment; third, the lives of the people who made, sold, or repaired new media, tools, or goods; fourth, the lives of the people who communicated through new systems and modern conveniences. Specifically, occupations that are closer to understanding the lives of ordinary people should be selected as subjects of priority research.
In this study, it was suggested that the research process should focus on the ways in which people work and their forms, and to grasp their life culture. That is because, in folklore, it is important to consider "the experience and perception of the lives of the ordinary people" who rely on physical labor. Works focusing on the methods and forms of labor in new occupations, including the investigations on food, clothing and shelter, social relations, rituals, and leisure, would have significant folkloristic and historical implications. In the process of analyzing data, it is necessary to understand how the traditional culture encounters modern culture or contemporary culture, and how the traditional culture is sustained and transformed in relation to one another, in addition to this, how modern culture or contemporary culture is settled. In other words, it is important to look for the logic of traditional-modern-contemporary cultural connections and change, while capturing the discontinuity, continuity, and structural changes in traditional culture.
On the other hand, it is necessary to pay attention not only to modern and contemporary culture in terms of cultural change, but also to what cultural characteristics will be revealed in the process of introducing and accepting modern and contemporary culture in Korean society; in the world system, cultural diversity is an important value to be considered.
