교회사 연구의 새로운 관점: 정두희의 천주교회사 연구성과를 중심으로 (New Perspectives on the Study of Church History －Focused on Chung Doo Hee’s Achievement on the Study of Catholic Church History－)

초록

조선왕조의 건국문제와 조선사회사 연구에 천착했던 정두희는 한국천주교회사에대한 글을 적지 않게 남겼다. 그의 천주교회사에 대한 글은 비록 연구논문이라기보다역사가가 바라보는 천주교회의 모습과 조선의 주류에서 벗어나는 공동체에 대한 묘사이지만, 거기에는 교회사 연구를 위한 중요한 방법론과 관점이 많이 들어가 있다. 따라서 정두희가 남긴 교회사 서술에 대해서 중요한 부분들을 검토한 후, 거기에서 배울수 있는 교회사 연구의 새로운 방법론과 관점을 추출해 보고자 한다.
그가 남긴 천주교회사에 대한 글을 통해 정두희의 교회사 연구방법과 관점을 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 철저한 연구사 정리를 바탕으로 하는 관련사료의 독서로 역사 연구가 시작된다. 천주교와 관련된 인물 예컨대, 정약전, 김대건, 배교자 최해두와같이 관련 사료들이 새로 나올 때 마다 새로운 검토를 통해 연구가 보충되고 있다. 둘째, 외국학계의 학문조류를 교회사 연구에 반영한다. 치즈와 구더기 라는 미시사의내용을 참고하여 ‘천지창조설’에 대한 조선후기 학자(안정복)와 16세기 이탈리아의 농부(메노키오)의 견해를 비교하고 있다. 셋째, 정두희는 우리나라에 컴퓨터가 대중화되기 전부터 역사 자료의 데이터베이스를 통한 연구를 진행하였다. 기해박해와 병인박해를 설명하기 위해 자료의 수치화와 통계를 통해 분석하며 연구하였다. 넷째, 인물사 중심의 역사서술과 대중화를 지향하고 있다. 정두희는 인물사 연구의 중요성을 매우 강조하였고, 그러한 인물을 통해 내밀한 역사에 접근하여 이해하고, 이러한 연구결과를대중과 소통하는 역사서술로 전달하고자 했다. 이러한 정두희 교회사연구를 한마디로‘시대사를 통해 교회사를 바라보는’ “균형 사관” 혹은 “중용 사관”이라고 붙여본다.

영어초록

Chung Doo Hee focused his academic career on the foundation of the Joseon dynasty and its social history, which led him to produce much historiography on the history of Catholicism in Korea. Although such of his writings are, rather than academic theses, descriptions and views on the Korean Catholic Church, a community that has deviated from the mainstream society, from a historian’s perspective. His writings, however, still connote many methodologies and perspectives significant for the research on the history of Catholicism in Korea. Thus, this thesis reviews his key descriptions on the history of Catholicism in Korea and draws new methodologies and perspectives for its research.
From his descriptions and texts related to the history of Catholicism in Korea, Chung Doo Hee’s methodologies and perspectives can be summarized as: First, his historical research began with reading relevant historical records based on an exhaustive summary of research history.
Research on historical figures related to Catholicism in Korea, e.g., Jeong Yak-jeon, Kim Dae-geon and Choe Hae-du the apostate, is still being updated with new discoveries of historical records. Second, academic trends outside of Korea was applied to the Korean Catholic history research. The microhistorical approach in The Cheese and The Worms by Ginzburg was applied as he compared the opinions on Creationism of late-Joseon scholar An Jeong-bok and16th-century Italian farmer Menocchio.
Third, he carried out his research through a database of historical data even before personal computers had been popularized in Korea. In order to discuss the Catholic Persecutions in the years of Gihae(1839) and Byeongin(1866), he quantified the records and analyzed the statistical data. Fourth, he pursued popularizing historiography focused on historical figures. Chung Doo Hee strongly emphasized the importance of research of historical figures and endeavored to achieve a more intimate approach and understanding of history and deliver the outcome in historiography more accessible to the public. Chung Doo Hee’s research on Church history could be summed up as “balanced historical perspective” or “moderate historical perspective” ‘on Church history through the history of a specific period.
