초록

분명 오늘날 뉴미디어 아트를 접하는 작가와 관객은 이것과는 다른 입장을 가지고 있다. 본 연구는 단순히 뉴미디어아트에서 작가와 작품, 작품과 관객, 관객과 작가의 커뮤니케이션의 유무를 논하자는 것이 아니다. 작품의 사용자(user)로서 관객과 작가는 뉴미디어 작품상에서 누구와 커뮤니케이션을 이루고 있는 것일까.
오늘날 뉴미디어아트에서 기존의 작가(Author)와 독자(reader)의 관계에서 작가와 독자는 어떻게 동등하고 능동적인 유저(user)의 입장을 취하게 되었는가. 본 연구는 뉴미디어의 초심으로 돌아가 작가와 관객의 입장변화와 그 이유를 살펴보기 위해 오늘날 인터렉티브 아트보다 앞선 비디오아트의 시작인 백남준에게서 중점적으로 살펴보고자 한다.
백남준은 이미 1960년대에 음악과는 달리 끝이 없는 자유로운 ‘시간-이미지(The Time-image)’을 즐기기 시작했고, 향후 기술의 발달을 통해 관객인 다른 사람들도 모두 기술의 사용자(user)로서 그러한 자유로운 ‘시간-이미지의 지배’와 분열증적 타자와의 소통을 함께 즐길 수 있기를 바란 것이다. 그러나 여기서 그가 이야기 하는 소통은 오늘날의 일반적인 작품에서 작가와 관람객의 소통과는 조금 다른 형상을 띄고 있다. 그는 그가 발견한 테크놀로지 내부의 수많은 분열적 타자와의 소통을 이야기 하였다. 그리고 그저 관람객도 그와 같이 그러한 소통을 경험의 가능성을 보여주어 오히려 자신이 바라는 자유에 대한 공감을 끌어내고 싶었던 것이었을 수도 있다.
미술에서 일반적으로 소통이라 하면 작가와 관람객이 작품을 매개로 소통한다고 인식하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 이것은 실제 세계(real world)의 사람과 사람사이에 소통에 익숙해져 오해해버리는 오류이다. 앞서 보았던 백남준의 비디오아트에서 ‘분열적 타자’의 발견은 뉴미디어 아트만이 이룰 수 있는 사용자(user)와 작품매체의 소통가능성을 보여주는 것이다. 여기서 작가의 입장은 매체 개발자이자 동시에 사용자에 포함된다. 즉, 작품을 만드는 작가도, 작품을 이용하고 경험하는 관객도 작품과 소통하는 사용자의 입장에 서게 된 것이다. 백남준의 작품에서 느껴지는 기존의 미술과 다른 자유는 바로 ‘기존의 미술이 가지고 있던 작가와 관람객간의 소통뿐만 아니라, 관람객과 관람객의 소통, 그리고 그동안 직접적으로 이루어지지 않았던 작품과의 소통이 가능하다.’라는 것에서 비롯된다. 비디오아트는 바로 기존의 미술과 뉴미디어의 자유에 과도기적인 단계를 보이고 있다. 그러한 과도기적 단계에서 사람들은 그의 작품을 기존의 예술에 비교하여 실험영화에서부터 설치 작품으로 다양한 해석이 가능하다. 그러나 그런 다양한 해석 아래 작품의 사용자는 백남준의 작품에서 보이는 뉴미디어를 통한 소통과 창작의 가능성(시간의 자유로운 지배, 분열증적 타자와의 소통)에 대해서 간과하지 말아야한다.
그동안 이러한 비디오아트와 뉴미디어아트의 자유는 관람객에게 인식되지 않고 있었다. 그들이 아직 사용자이기 이전에 관람자인 입장을 취하기 때문이다. 이에 대해 뉴미디어 아트를 만드는 매체개발자인 작가들이 먼저 사용자의 입장에서 뉴미디어아트만의 장점인 ‘자유’를 인식하고 개발하나가는 자세가 필요하다.

Clearly, the artist and audience have a different perspective facing today's new media art. The study is not only about the presence of new media art, artist, and just work, work, and the audience, the audience and the artist's communication. Today, how do the reader and author work as an active users on the relationship between Author and readers in the new media art. This study of new media artists and audiences return to first principles, to study on the position change and reasons of today's interactive art, video art, focusing on Nam June Paik, the beginner of video art.
In the 1960s, Nam June Paik unlike the music, began to enjoy the images of endless free 'time - the image (The Time-image)' through the development of future technologies, other spectators as users of technology (user) also hope to enjoy the free 'time - the image of the dominant' and the divisions to communicate with the other. But the communication about where he works today in the general communication of the artist and audience are evolving to a slightly different shape. Inside, he found a number of technologies to communicate with other divisive people. And just a spectator experience, and likewise the possibility of such a communication rather than showing sympathy to their desire for freedom could have been thought alike.
If art could be used as a way of communication in general, artists and visitors recognize that the works tend to be communicated through the medium. But this is the real world (real world) of communication between man and man, which is to misunderstand the accustomed error. Nam June Paik's video art, seen earlier in the 'schizoid type' discovery of the new media art, which users can make ten thousand and two (user) and the work is to show the possibilities of media communication. This author's position in the medium is both as a developer and user at the same time. In other words, to create works of artists, the audience experiences the work and also works by communicating with the user's position. Felt in the work of Nam June Paik's art and other freedoms that the existing 'traditional art, as well as communication between artists and audiences, spectators and visitors' communication, and work had been done to directly communicate with is available.' Video art, traditional art and new media has shown the right to freedom of the transitional period. People in such a transitional phase of his work can be interpreted as a variety of installation work compared to existing experimental film art. However, such a variety of interpretations of this work, the user looks in Paik's work, creating the possibility of communication through new media (free reign of the time, communicate with the other divisions trail) should not be overlooked for.
Meanwhile, the freedom of video art and new media art to the audience had not been recognized yet. Users are still watching them as spectators rather than users before taking positions as users. It is necessary to recognize a new media art, media developer, writer, first from the standpoint of their own merit of new media art 'freedom'.
