남한 내 고구려 유적 유물의 새로운 이해 - 최근 발굴 유적을 중심으로 - (A New Understanding of Relics of the Goguryo Kingdom in South Korea)

초록

이 글은 최근 남한에서 발굴된 고구려 성곽들을 중심으로 유적의 구조에 대한 이해, 유구중복과 후대보축구간의 해석, 유구와 유물의 공반관계 등을 검토하여 새로운 시각의 접근방법을 찾아 본 것이다.
남한의 고구려유적 중 수막새가 출토되는 유적은 홍련봉1보루와 호로고루 등 두 유적뿐이다. 이들 수막새는 막새면이 손상되지 않게 주연부만을 돌려가면서 떼어내는 타결양상을 동일하게 보여주는데 이것은 주연부만을 훼기하는 의례행위이며, 그것을 수행한 장소는 유적 내부의 일정한 공간에서 이루어졌다고 할 수 있다. 호로고루의 경우 우물지로 추정되는 시설에서 출토되었기 때문에 의도적인 매납이 이루어진 것을 알 수 있었다. 인접한 지하식 벽체 건물지도 동일한 목적을 가진 장소적인 의미가 있으며 이곳은 어떠한 특별한 행위가 벌어졌던 시설과 공간으로 파악된다. 이를 반증하듯 관모나 도침, 저울추 모양의 각종 토제품, 흑색마연단경호와 부형토기류 그리고 탄화곡물과 동물뼈가 수습되었다. 이중 각종 이형 토제품은 실물을 본떠서 만든 모형품으로 제의와 관련된 특수기물로 추정된다. 등숙된 탄화곡물은 식량 비축보다는 곡식신을 위해 제사지내는 수신제의 성격이 강한 것으로 보았는데 제의는 곡물의 수확기인 10월 무렵에 이루어졌을 가능성을 상정하였다. 이외에도 소와 말, 멧돼지 등 모두 6종의 동물뼈가 함께 출토되었다. 동물뼈는 모든 부위에서 높은 파손도를 보이며 멧돼지의 경우 머리 부분만 집중적으로 출토되는 점이 특이하다. 소뼈는 우제점과 관련이 있고 멧돼지와 사슴의 뼈는 수렵제와 밀접한 연관을 지을 수 있다. 따라서 홍련봉1보루와 호로고루는 수막새가 출토되는 위계가 높은 유적이다. 이들 유적을 중심으로 제의가 행해졌을 가능성은 매우 높다. 고구려의 동맹제의와 유사한 제의가 이루어졌다면 바로 지역의 중심을 이루는 행정중심에서 이루어졌을 가능성을 배제할 수 없기 때문이다. 즉 두 유적은 군사적인 기능도 있지만 오히려 상징적인 의례행위가 이루어진 공간이라는 의미도 부각될 수 있다고 여겨진다.

영어초록

This paper aims to determine new approaches for investigating relics through understanding the structure of historic sites and analysis of repeatedly found relics and sections of walls of a fortress that were reinforced in later times; and forecasting the properties of findings based on other relics found together. The research was done focusing on fortresses of the Goguryo Kingdom that were found in South Korea.
Among the historic sites of the Goguryo Kingdom found in South Korea, the male-Makse were found in only two places, Fort 1 of Hongryeon-Peak and Horogoru Fort. (Makse refers to the tiles decorated on the edges of eaves and they are classified as male and female.) The two male-Makses showed the same pattern in which the rim was separated from the surface in order not to harm the surface. This was the conventional way of separating the rim only and it was performed in a certain space of a fort. As for the Horogoru Fort, the male-Makses were found in a place that was suspected to be a well, which indicates that there was intentional burying there. The nearby building site with underground-style walls was supposed to be a place that had the same purpose and it is suspected that special performances were conducted there.
Diverse kinds of earthen wares such as official hats, hair bands for the hats, weights for a balance, short-neck black polished jars, pot-style earthen wares, crops, and animal bones were found to prove this assumption. Among them, many different forms of earthen wares were the models that had the same form of actual ones. It was suspected that the earthen wares were special wares related to ritual services. Well-matured crops strongly represented the properties of ritual services that were served to the Crop God, and there was the possibility that services were conducted around October after the harvesting of crops.
Along side there were six kinds of animal bones found together such as ox/cow, horse, and wild boar. The bones were very severely damaged in every part and especially as for the wild boar, only the bones of their heads were found in most cases. Cow and ox bones may be related to fortune-telling with a cow or an ox's hoof(牛蹄占) and the bones of deer and boars are closely related to ritual services for hunting(狩獵祭).
Thus, Fort 1 of Hongryeon-Peak and Horogoru Fort are very important historic places in which male-Makses were found. There is a high possibility that the ritual services were performed centering on these sites. If the ritual services that were similar to the Dongmyung Ritual Service of the Goguryo Kingdom had been performed there, they would have been done in a place of administration. That is, the two sites hold significance in representing the space of symbolic ritual services as well as having military functions.
