Kang, Shin-Wook. Countée Cullen’s “The Black Christ”: A Subversive Narrative of White Supremacy. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 60 (2015): 1-29. The Harlem Renaissance in literature was never a cohesive movement. But it was loosely bound together by a desire for racial self-assertion and self-definition in the face of white supremacy. At that time, the New Negro was thought of as a black American social identity that travelled well beyond the confines of the United States, to serve as a metaphor for a rising, black, cultural and intellectual consciousness informed by international political events. At the same time, an ensemble of poets, novelists, playwrights, and artists rejected the white Jesus images around them which was a shape-shifting totem of white supremacy. They blackened him for the first time with paintings that portrayed him as a lynch victim and by telling new tales of the Son of God born in the American South, teaching racial harmony and economic justice, and then crucified for such southern heresies. Contrary to received opinions, I think that Countée Cullen was one of the black poets who represented the spirit of the New Negro very well. Particularly, his poem “The Black Christ” was a noticeable narrative planned to challenge and subvert white supremacy by presenting a Christ to white America who was emphatic to suffering blacks in the South of America.
