대학 ‘교양한문’ 강의에 대한 새로운 모색 (Exploring New Ways of Education for “Classical Chinese Liberal Education” in Universities)

초록

현재 대학은 신자유주의 시대, 시장의 원리에 따라 교육을 상품화하여 수요자 중심교육, 교육 경쟁력 강화 등에 힘쓰고 있다. 더욱이 학령인구 감소로 대학은 생존 경쟁에서 살아남기 위해 학문 탐구라는 본연의 자세를 버리고 취업을 위한 훈련소로 변하고 있다. 이런 상황에서 ‘교양한문’과 같은 한문 과목은 고루하고 힘든 수업이라는 인식 탓에 인기 없는 과목이 된 지 오래다. 이에 본 연구자는 한문 강독과 글쓰기를 융합한 교육을 통해 한문도 익히고 고전을 현대적으로 해석해 학습자 스스로 성찰하는 수업으로 변화를 주었고, 나름의 성과가 있어 몇 가지 개선 방향을 제안하고자 한다.
본고는 우선 디지털 문명과 신자유주의 시대 학문이 어떻게 변화하고 있는지, 이 변화의 문제점을 비판하고, 한문 고전이 가지는 현대적 의미와 에세이를 통한 자기화 과정 그리고 이러한 강의에 대한 학생들의 반응에 대해 살펴보았다. 수업을 들은 학생들의 의견을 보면 이런 강의의 필요성을 느끼고 있음을 알 수 있다. 다만 강의 제목이 올드하고 딱딱해 학생들의 접근성이 떨어진다. 또한 수강 인원이 너무 많아 학생들과 심도 있는 토론이 불가능하며 에세이를 일일이 첨삭해 줄 수 없다는 것이 문제였다. 물론 교수자도 한문만이 아니라 동양과 서양, 현대와 고전을 넘나드는 cross-text를 해야 하기 때문에 과거 강의보다는 몇 배 더 공력이 드는 것은 사실이다.
하지만 ‘溫故而知新’이라고 하지 않았던가? 시대가 변했다고 대학 강의의 본질까지 버릴 수는 없기에 몇 가지 제안을 하자면 딱딱한 교과목 제목은 학생들이 좋아할 만한 제목으로 바꾸고, 한문 강독은 유지하되 한자는 가능하면 쉽고 재미있게 익힐 수 있도록 했으면 한다. 그리고 많은 문장을 가르치기보다는 한 문장이라도 그 안의 의미들을 cross-text를 통해 학생들의 관심에 맞게 가르쳐 스스로 성찰할 수 있게 하고, 이를 에세이 쓰기를 통해 자기화할 수 있도록 했으면 한다.

영어초록

Currently, universities have commercialized education according to the market principle of the Neo-liberalism and are working on reinforcing consumer-oriented education and competitiveness of education. Furthermore, due to the decrease of school age population, universities’ priority has become surviving in the competition, which has led them to discard the proper attitude of scholarly pursuit and turn into job training facility. Under these circumstances, it has been long since Classical Chinese courses such as “Classical Chinese Liberal Education” have become unpopular due to the perception that they are difficult and obsolete. Therefore, I have transformed the class into an introspective course in which the learners can learn classical Chinese and interpret classics in the contemporary context through the education that merged readings in classical Chinese with writing. Based on some level of accomplishment this has brought about, I would like to propose a few ways and directions of improvement.
First, this paper examines the changes occurring to academic learning in the age of digital culture and neoliberalism, criticizes the problems of these changes, explores personalization process by way of exploring the contemporary meaning of classical Chinese literature and paper writing, and finally overviews students’ response to these classes. Looking at the opinions of the students who took the course, I could see that they feel the need for this kind of class. However, they also pointed out a few problems: the course title is too old-fashioned and stiff that it feels less accessible; also, number of enrolled students are too large that in-depth discussion is impossible and the it is difficult to have every paper corrected in detail. Also, lecturers must also put in greater amount of work in preparing these classes since they not only study classical Chinese, but also have to cross between the texts from the East and the West, or the contemporary and classical texts.
Yet, there is also a saying that “review the old to learn the new.” Even if the time changes, one cannot discard the essence of university classes. Hence, a few of suggestions that I would like to propose are changing the title to something students may be intrigued to, and allowing the students to learn classical characters in a fun and easy manner, while maintaining the readings in classical Chinese. Also, instead of teaching many sentences, allowing students to be self-reflect by teaching the meaning of even a single sentence through cross-text and based on their interest. In the end, I would like to provide the students with an opportunity to personalize it by writing their own papers.
