초록

東岡 鄭雲葂(1906~1948)은 일제 강점기와 해방공간에 걸쳐 활동했던 화가이다. 정운면은 文人畵 뿐만 아니라 독자적인 필법의 산수화를 그려 지역화단에서 주목을 받았으며 의재 허백련과 함께 鍊眞會 활동을 하면서 20세기 초 광주화단을 이끌었다. 하지만 42세의 나이로 요절하였다. 정운면에 관한 기록으로는 호남의 회화사를 정리할 때 짧게 언급해 놓은 것이 전부이며, 아직까지 그의 생애와 畵業을 정리한 연구는 미흡하다.
20세기 초 지방과 중앙화단을 오가며 다양한 활동을 펼쳤던 정운면은 조선 말기 小痴 許鍊 이후로 전통적 형식의 남종화풍을 승계한 보수적인 화단에 새롭고 참신한 화법으로 활력을 불어넣었다고 평가된다. 일찍이 조선미술전람회에 <墨梅>로 특선을 한 후 그 이름이 (세인에게) 널리 알려졌으며, 변관식에게서 본격적인 그림공부를 하면서 畵業을 다지기 시작했다. 그는 鮮展이나 書畵協會展에 꾸준히 작품을 출품하고 활동하면서 지역화가로서가 아닌 시대의 흐름에 부응하는 화가가 되고자 했다. 또한 鍊眞會 등의 활동을 통하여 여러 畵友들과 교유하면서 독자적인 자신의 화법을 구축하였다. 그는 전통적인 것만을 고수하는 방식을 버리고 화단에 유행하는 새로운 화법, 즉 일본풍에도 관심을 보였는데 文展에 입선한 후 직접 일본으로 건너가 고무로 스이운(小室翠雲)을 만나는 열정을 보이기도 하였다.
정운면의 畵業은 크게 四君子畵 특히 墨梅畵와 山水畵, 그리고 花鳥畵 등으로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 묵매화는 이미 작품 활동 초기부터 형성된 무르익은 필법을 보여준다. 그의 매화도는 대체로 먹에 물기가 많고 진하여 간결한 느낌은 적다. 거칠고 분방한 표현은 조선 말기 매화도의 형식을 보여준다. 산수화는 약 세 시기를 거치면서 나름대로의 특징적인 화풍을 형성하며 작품을 남겼다. 초기에 소정 변관식의 영향이 두드러지는 필법이 보이는데, 이 시기에는 변관식의 영향 아래 짙은 농묵의 대담한 필선을 쓰면서 농묵의 태점으로 산과 언덕을 도탑게 표현하였다. 연진회 활동을 하던 중기에는 허백련의 남종화운동에 동참하면서 전통 남종화의 필법을 구사하기도 한다. 文展에 입선한 후 정운면은 일본 남화풍의 양식을 접목하면서, 이제까지와는 또 다른 부드럽고 섬세한 필선으로 온화한 분위기를 느끼게 하는 작품위주로 자신만의 산수화 양식을 형성한다. 변관식으로부터 시작하여 전통남종화풍을 섭렵하고 거기에다 새로운 일본화풍의 감성을 더하면서 자신만의 개성적인 화풍을 확립한 것이다. 한때 ‘동강바람’이라 불릴 정도로 그의 그림은 참신하면서도 새로웠다.
수묵 위주의 墨梅畵를 비롯한 사군자화와 산수화를 주로 그리던 정운면이었지만 그 외에도 짙은 채색의 화조그림 등을 남기고 있어 다양한 영역에 능했던 그의 역량을 짐작할 수 있게 한다. 봉건적 남화전통을 고수했던 보수적인 광주화단에서 개성적이고도 새로운 작품을 그려낸 정운면이 화단에 활력을 불어넣은 것만은 틀림없는 사실일 것이다.

영어초록

The artistic activity of Jeong Woon-myun(1906-1948, his pseudonym is Donggang), who was the one of the characteristic painter from the Japanese colonial period to the liberation, painted landscape painting using uniquely creative stroke of the brush. He died at an early age in the 42 years old but he contributed to the local community and activity in the Gwangju art circle in the early 20th century with Heo Baek-ryeon(許百鍊: 1892~1977). Jeong Woon-myun’s life and his artistic career was not studied specifically and they were merely mentioned briefly in some documents about the history of painting in Jeolla-do.

The name of the painter has been known widely with his specially awarded painting <Ink plum painting> in the Joseon Art Exhibition. After that, he was trained his painting skills by Byeon Kwan-sik(卞寬植: 1899~1976). He has been sent his´s paintings to the Joseon Art Exhibition and Seohwa Association Exhibition for correspond the current atmosphere of the time rather than stay only for local painter. In addition, he made his own painting skills and brush work through interchange with other painters who work within Yeonjin-hoe(鍊眞會). He also had interest about new painting skills such as the Japanese painting style. For this reason, after His painting was accepted for the Japanese cultural ministry Art Exhibition, he went to meet Komuro Suiun(小室翠雲: 1874~1945) with a fervent desire about the art.
His works could be classified and by several specific fields such as the Four Gentleman Painting(four kind of Gracious Plants: plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo), ink plum painting, landscape painting and flowers and birds painting. In the case of the ink plum painting, we can figure out the painters mature painting skill. In his plum painting the brush work is thick and wet so it is hard to find brief and compact feeling. The liberal painting work shows the form and style of the end of the Joseon ink plum painting. The land scape painting of the painter went through three steps to confirm the painters own style. At the first the paintings were main based on brush work style of Byeon Kwan-sik, in this period, intrepidity lines with thick ink touch made mountains and hills under influence of Byeon Kwan-sik. Yeonjin-hoe activities fall under the middle period, the painter tried to describe style of Southern-school literati painting with Heo Baek-ryeon’s effect. After acceptation for the Japanese cultural ministry Art Exhibition, the painter made new type that integrates the Japanese Southern-school painting. From this step, his painting was demonstrate delicate sensitivity and sensibility with gentle brush work. With mixture of Byeon Kwan-sik and Japanese Southern-school painting, he made his own characteristic painting style and the so called Donggang trend was new and striking one.
He had excellent skill to be able to deal with various genres such as landscape painting, Ink plum painting, futhermore rich coloured flowers and birds painting.
It is obvious that Jeong Woon-myun made his own painting which exerting a tremendous influence in the painting circle of Gwangju, while other painters of Gwangju circle faithfully followed the tradition and the style of Southern-school literati painting.
