현대 조소에 나타난 사의적 표현 연구: 김종영과 우웨이산의 작품을 중심으로 (A Study on the Spontaneously Expressive Representation in Modern Sculpture : focused on the works of Kim Chong-Yung and Wu Weishan)

초록

본 연구는 동양 미학에서 내적 감정을 표현하는 정신적 특성인 ‘사의’를 중심으로 전개하면서, 이것이구상이나 추상이라는 형태적 차원을 넘어 의미론과 정신의 표현이라는 차원에서 현대 조각에서의 구현 가능성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 먼저 사의의 개념과 사상적 함의를 이론적으로 고찰하여 사의의 표현이 형보다 신을 중시하는 중신경형과 객관적 닮음에서 자유로울수 있는 유의상형이어야 한다는 점을 밝힌다. 이를 바탕으로 사의적 조각의 사례로 한국의 김종영과중국의 우웨이산의 작품을 분석한다. 특히, 지금까지 주로 서구의 조형 언어인 ‘추상’으로 간주해 온김종영의 조각이 상징과 은유를 통해 내면의 감정을 표현하는 우의어물과 과도한 조각이나 인위적인가공의 흔적을 최소화한다는 의미의 ‘불각’이라는 작가 자신의 창작 이념을 바탕으로 구상과 추상을초월하는 사의 조각으로서의 의미를 도출한다. 또한, 스스로 ‘사의 조각’이라는 개념을 제시하여 중국현대 사의 조각의 대표 작가로 자리매김 된 우웨이산은 객관적인 외형의 닮음을 바탕으로 하되 인물의 내적 정신과 기운의 표현에 중점을 둔 독창적인 인물조각을 통해 전통 사의 미학의 형신겸비와 중신경형의 지향점을 보여주고 있음을 밝힌다. 이들 두 작가의 작품 분석을 통해 전통적인 심미 사상의핵심을 이루는 ‘사의’가 회화를 넘어 현대 조각 창작에서도 다양한 가능성을 지니고 있으며, 기존 조각작품들에 대해서도 동양 문화적 시각에서 재해석하는 것의 필요성과 가능성을 제시한다.

영어초록

This study centers on the concept of ‘sahwi’, a mental quality that expresses inner emotions in Eastern aesthetics, and aims to explore the possibility of its implementation in contemporary sculpture in terms of semantics and the expression of the spirit, transcending the chromatic dimension of figuration or abstraction. To this end, this paper first theoretically examines the concept and ideological implications of Will(意), revealing that the representation of Will should be a deistic form, which emphasizes spirit over forms, and a symbolic form, which means that symbolic shapes or images should be used to express Will rather than objective resemblance.
Based on this, we analyzed the works of Korean artist Kim chong-yung and Chinese artist Wu Weishan as examples of Spontaneously Expressed sculpture. In particular, Kim chong-yung's sculptures, which have been mainly considered as ‘abstract’, a Western sculptural language, were analyzed to derive the meaning of Spontaneously Expressive sculpture that transcend the conceptual and abstract based on the artist's own creative philosophy of ‘Implication within Objects’, which expresses inner feelings through symbols and metaphors, and ‘to not sculpt’, which means minimizing the traces of excessive carving or artificial processing. In addition, Wu Weishan, who has established himself as a representative artist of contemporary Chinese Spontaneously Expressive sculpture by proposing the concept of ‘Spontaneously Expressive sculpture’, demonstrates his orientation towards the concept of ‘combination of form and spirit’ and ‘more emphasis on verve compared to objective forms’ system through his original portrait sculptures, which are not based on objective external resemblance but focus on the expression of the figure's inner spirit and aura. Through the analysis of the works of these two artists, it is revealed that ‘sahwi’, which forms the core of traditional aesthetic ideas, has various possibilities in contemporary sculpture beyond painting, and can suggest the importance and necessity of reinterpreting existing sculpture objects through the lens of Eastern culture.
