초록

이 논문은 亂世인 朝鮮朝 末 王室家 인물 중에서 정치가이면서 書畵藝術家의 삶을 살았던 石坡 李昰應(1820~1898)의 書畵創作에 깃든 審美意識을 고찰한 것이다. 그중에서도 石坡 書畵의 畵題에 드러난 審美意識 중 하나인 興趣境界의 偶然欲書的 審美體現을 탐구한 것이다. 우연욕서는 흥취경계를 그 基底로 하는데, 이 흥취는 시서화 등 모든 예술정신의 출발점이자 근본 기틀이 된다. 동양예술은 하나의 작품을 평가할 때 작가의 숙련된 기교의 탁월성보다 그 너머의 예술사상의 특성·풍격·심미성을 기준으로 해서 평가하곤 한다. 이런 점은 바로 우연욕서적 심미를 통한 평가 여부가 담겨 있다. 이 같은 우연욕서의 예술적 적용에 해당하는 인물 중 하나가 이하응이다. 조선조 말의 과정에서 석파 이하응의 인생은 다단한 역정을 겪었다. 宗室의 석파는 조선의 정치나 사회문화에 대한 책임을 지고자 했던 인물이다. 하지만 현실적 상황은 그렇게 녹녹하지 않았고, 이런 상황에서 그는 자신의 심경을 서화예술창작을 통해 표출하고자 하였다. 석파 서화창작의 始終에서 虛和境의 ‘心物統一’, 즉 心物이 性靈으로 통일된 찰나의 興趣境界는 석파의 예술창작정신의 또 하나의 중요한 심미의식이 된다. 석파는 자신의 글에서 반드시 興이 일어나야 그림을 그릴 수 있고, 그 흥은 단연코 기쁨이라 하였다. 따라서 그 興은 偶然欲書이고, 그 기쁨은 그 어떤 외부로부터의 구속이 없는 자유로운 정신상태이며, 우발적인 의지는 그 어떤 목적성이 없는 虛和의 경지이다. 동양미학에서 興이란 ‘感物起情’이다. 主客의 감정은 서로 소통하여야만 興이 일어난다. 즉, 興은 사물에 대하여 직관적으로 감응하고, 나아가 보다 나은 효과를 얻기 위하여 고차원의 경지에 도달하려 한다. 결국 興은 마음으로서 사물을 취함에 주체를 잃지 않고, 그 사물이 마음에 통달되어, 心物이 性靈으로 통일된 찰나의 興趣境에서 예술가의 참 모습으로 체현되고 있는 神韻의 창작 妙法이다. 따라서 석파의 서화를 통한 예술창작에는, 興趣境界의 偶然欲書的인 審美를 體現하고자한 정신이 담겨 있다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is considerations on aesthetic awareness with writings and paintings created by Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung (1820~1898), one of royal family members in the turbulent late Joseon dynasty who also lived a life of a politician, calligrapher and painter. Among various kinds of aesthetic awareness exhibited on Seokpa’s writings and notes on paintings, the study particularly explores embodiment of aesthetic appreciation with accidental desire to write of the pleasurable realm. The accidental desire to write is based on the pleasurable realm and this pleasure is where all kinds of artistic spirit starts and originates. In the world of Oriental art, evaluation on a piece of work is made on the basis of features, airs and aesthetic elements in artistic ideas beyond an artist’s excellent technique or skills. This point refers to whether the work is evaluated through aesthetic appreciation with accidental desire to write. Lee Ha-Eung is one of figures that falls into artistic application of this accidental desire to write. In the late Joseon, Seokpa Lee Ha-Eung’s life was very much complicated. As a member of royal family, Seokpa tried to take the responsibility of Joseon’s politics and social culture. Reality, however, was tough and in that circumstance, he tried to express his political intentions through creating writings and paintings. What penetrates Seokpa’s creation of writings and paintings is ‘Unity of one’s heart and an object (心物統一)’ on the stage of emptiness and harmony, in other words, a moment of pleasurable realm when heart and object are unified with spirit, which serves as another important form of aesthetic awareness in Seokpa’s spirit for artistic creation. Seokpa stated on his note on paintings, ‘pleasure (興)’ should be aroused to draw a painting and that ‘pleasure’ is definitely a ‘delight.’ That pleasure, therefore, is accidental desire to write; the delight is a free mental state without any restrictions from outside and; accidental will is the stage of emptiness and harmony without any finality. Pleasure in Oriental aesthetics is ‘nature aroused with feelings on object (感物起情).’ Emotions of a subject and an object should be communicated to arouse pleasure. In other words, pleasure tries to reach a high-dimensional stage in order to intuitively respond to an object and further, to obtain better effect. Ultimately, ‘pleasure’ is an excellent means of creation with mysterious and elegant taste that is embodied by an artist’s true colors at the pleasurable realm of a moment when one’s heart and an object are unified with spirit without losing a subject for embracing the object and with the object thoroughly engraved on one’s heart. Therefore, Seokpa’s spirit to embody aesthetical appreciation with accidental desire to write at pleasurable realm is put in artistic creation of his writings and paintings.
