초록

결핵은 일제시대의 대표적인 질병이었다. 그래서 세워진 것이 해주구세요양원이었다. 이 요양원은 1928년 3월 기독교조선감리교회 선교사 하락의 창설로 개원되었다.
『요양촌』에는 결핵에 대한 의사들의 논문과 환자들의 투병기, 여배우 등과 같은 유명인의 격려편지, 그리고 문예 기사가 실려 있다. 이 잡지에 실린 글들은 과학주의에 기반한 결핵에 대한 인식의 필요성을 역설하고 있다.
잡지 『요양촌』이 매호 발간시에 가장 중점을 기울여 게재하고 있는 것이 「폐결핵과 공기『(제1호), 「일광요법과 자외선 광선요법」(제2호), 「폐결핵과 ‘비타민’」(제3호), 「결핵과 유전」(제5호), 「각혈과 그의 처치」(제7호) 등 결핵에 대한 예방, 요양, 치료에 대한 전문의사들의 논문들이라는 점은 이 잡지가 지니고 있는 위상을 짐작하기에 충분한 것이다.
『요양촌』은 질병에 대한 계몽적 지식의 전달과 환자들의 정보 교환을 위한 담론 공간을 주요한 목표로 삼고 있었다. 이 잡지는 위생과 질병에 대한 당대의 담론을 선도하는 의료정보지로서의 역할을 수행하고 있었다.
『요양촌』에는 실제 환자들과 의사들만 아니라 이태준, 임화, 박태원, 송영과 같은 기성 작가들이 시, 소설, 희곡, 수필을 싣고 있다. 이들 자신이 폐병이라는 병의 메타포와 밀접한 연관을 지니고 있는 사람들이었다. 이 작품에 대한 분석을 통해 결핵에 대한 인식과 표상의 구체성을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 이들이 해주요양원에서 발간된 잡지에 문예를 연재함으로써 독자 대중에게 미치고자 한 영향을 살필 수 있다.
해주구세요양원은 국가가 설치한 기관은 아니었지만, 제국주의의 통치와 기독교의 선교가 연계하여 설치한 통치의 장치로서의 의미를 지니고 있다. 『요양촌』은 결핵이라는 병을 다스리는 식민지의 관리자들의 담론과 결핵요양원에서 관리되는 주체들이 자신들의 육체를 인식해가는 과정을 둘러싼 이야기들이 산출하는 장으로서 의미를 지닌다.

영어초록
