看話三要의 유기적 관계에 대한 고찰 -『高峰和尙禪要』를 중심으로 - (An Investigation on a Close Relationship among Three Essentials of Kanhua Chan(看話三要): Based on Chan Essentials(禪要))

초록

看話三要는 간화선 수행을 할 적에 반드시 갖추어야 할 세 가지 중요한 用心으로서 대신근, 대분지, 대의정을 말한다. 신심과 의심에 분심을 하나 더 첨가하여 간화삼요라는 체계를 세운 사람은 원대의 선사 高峯原妙이며, 그 출처는『高峰和尙禪要』이다. 본고에서는『선요』전반의 내용을 토대로 간화삼요가 구체적으로 어떤 용심인가에 초점을 맞추어 고찰해 보았다.
간화삼요의 첫 번째에 해당하는 대신근은 화두를 참구하기 전에 먼저 갖추어야 할 용심이며, 신행의 첫걸음이자 깨달음을 이루게 하는 초석인 만큼 수미산을 의지하는 것과 같이 확고부동해야 한다. 믿음은 모두 네 가지로 분류해 볼 수 있는데, 깨달음의 문이 있다는 믿음, 불성에 대한 믿음, 화두공부에 대한 믿음. 스승인 본분종사에 대한 믿음 등이다. 그러나 간화삼요의 대신근은 불성에 대한 믿음과 화두공부에 대한 믿음이라고 할 수 있다. 불성에 대한 믿음이 바탕이 될 때 도를 닦고자하는 발심이 생기게 되고, 또 화두에 대한 믿음이 있을 때 화두의심으로 들어갈 수 있기 때문이다.
두 번째 大憤志는 화두참구가 수월해진 省力處에 이르렀으나 의정이 계속 지속되지 않을 때 필요한 용심이다. 이러할 때 더욱 간절한 마음으로 분발심을 내어 용맹정진을 해야 대의정이 일어나게 된다. 대분지는 대의정을 일으키게하는 동력이 된다는 점에서 매우 중요한 용심이라 하겠다.
세 번째는 대의정이다.『선요』에서는 疑, 疑情, 疑團이라는 세 용어의 의미를 구분하여 사용하고 있다. 疑의 경우는 화두를 들다 또는 의심하다라고 할 때 쓰이는 용어로서, 화두를 처음 들기 시작할 때의 誦話頭, 念話頭까지 포함하는 보다 포괄적인 의미를 지니고 있다고 하겠다. 반면 疑情은 오롯이 화두만 간절하게 의심이 되는 화두일념의 상태이다. 대의정은 의정의 상태가 계속 이어지는 것인데 의정의 상태를 유지하는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문에 대분지의 용심이 필요하다. 그러므로 대의정은 대분지 이후 일어나는 용심이라는 특징이 있다. 그리하여 의정의 상태가 계속되는 대의정의 상태가 되면 화두와 내가 모두 고요해지는 무심삼매로 들어가게 되는 것이다. 疑團은 온통 의심덩어리로 뭉쳐져 있다는 뜻이다. 의정이 내적심리상태가 화두의심에만 집중되어져 있을 때를 가리키는 반면 의단은 몸과 마음이 하나의 의심으로 집중된 상태를 말한다.
이상의 고찰을 통해 일반적으로 알려진 신심, 분심, 의심이 간화삼요의 대신근, 대분지, 대의정과는 약간의 차이가 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또 대신근, 대분지, 대의정은 그대로 간화공부의 차제이며, 서로 상생효과를 가져오게 하는 유기적 관계 속에 있음도 알 수 있었다. 다시 말하면 대신근은 화두를 참구하게 하는 용심이고, 대분지는 대의정을 일으키게 하는 용심이며, 대의정은 의정이 끊어지지 않고 지속되는 상태로서 마침내 간화의 구경인 무심삼매의 경지에까지 이르게 하는 용심이라는 점에서 간화삼요는 참선의 요체가 되는 것이다.

영어초록

The Three Essentials of Kanhua Chan refer to the three attitudes (or, functional mind 用心) - great faith, great efforts and great doubt - which are essential in practicing Kanhua Chan. The first to advocate them was Chan Master Gaofeng Yuanmiao 高峰原妙 of the Yuan Dynasty in his Gaofeng yuanmiao chanshi chanyao(hereafter, Chanyao) 高峰和尙禪要. This paper examined this three essentials in detail based on『Chanyao』.


The first of 'Three Essentials', the great faith is an attitude as a prerequisite to hwadu investigation, so it should be adamant as it is both a starting point of Buddhist practice and a foundation for enlightenment. The faith can be divided into four subcategories. They refer to the faith in: 1) the attainability of enlightenment, 2) Buddhahood, 3) hwadu investigation, 4) an authentic master. After all, the faith in Buddhahood gives rise to an aspiration for the Path, and the faith in hwadu investigation can lead one to a real hwadu doubt.


Second, the great efforts are an attitude needed when practitioners reach the 'energy-saving stage' 省力處 but have difficulty in maintaining the hwadu doubt. By this time, they should give rise to an even more greater effort to produce the great doubt. Like this, the great efforts are a very important attitude in that they produce an impetus to create the great doubt.


The third is the great doubt. In regard to the concept of doubt, Chan Essential explains three types of the doubt - doubt 疑, doubt feeling 疑情, and doubt mass 疑團 - which are used separately. Here, the first is used as having a comprehensive meaning including even 'reciting hwadu' 誦話頭 and 'recollecting hwadu' 念話頭 which is usually done by the beginners. The second refers to the one-minded state of hwadu investigation. This great doubt is a continuation of the doubt feeling, but, as it is not easy to maintain this state, the attitude of the great efforts is required. Accordingly, the great doubt is characteristically the attitude arising after the great efforts. Thus, if the great doubt, which is a continuation of the doubt feeling, lasts, practitioners can go into the stage of thought-free concentration in which both hwadu and I become tranquil. The third and last doubt mass means a type of doubt that is clustered into a mass. Whereas the doubt feeling indicates a state of concentration only on hwadu doubt internally, the doubt mass refers to a stage of concentration in which both the body and mind become one with the doubt.


The three essentials are generally referred to as the faith, the efforts, and the doubt; they are, however, different in their subtle meanings from those dealt with in this paper. The three essentials in themselves are the sequential stages of hwadu investigation while having an close relationship with one another producing synergy. Here, the great faith is an attitude that gives rise to hwadu investigation; the great efforts is that which produces the great doubt; and the great doubt is the state of continuing the doubt feeling without stopping and also an attitude allowing practitioners to reach thought-free concentration.
