초록

월고(月皐) 조성가(趙性家, 1824-1903)는 노사 기정진의 곁에 가장 가까이 머물면서 학문적 질정을 거듭하였고, 노사가 애써 드러내지 않았던 그의 학문적 입장을 이끌어 낸 노사의 고제(高弟)이다. 노사의 이기론적 입장이 집약된 「외필(猥筆)」은 노사가 조성가의 질문에 답하기 위해 지어진 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 논문은 노사와 조성가의 문답을 통해서 「외필」의 철학적 단초를 찾아보고, 노사와 조성가의 이론적 차이점을 드러내고자 한다.
노사는 제자 조성가의 질문에 자극을 받아 리의 기에 대한 주재를 강화하는 방향으로 나아갔다. 노사는 조성가와의 문답에서 처음에 태극(太極)이 동정(動靜)의 지극한 표준일 뿐만 아니라 동정하게 만드는 것이라고 말했다. 그러나 이후 노사는 ‘천명(天命)’이 하늘과 주재의 의미를 겸하는 말이며 리(理)가 기(氣)의 주인임을 가장 잘 보여준다고 주장한다. 노사가 보기에 ‘천명’은 리가 잃어버린 권한을 되돌려주는 개념이다. 결과적으로 노사는 「외필」의 첫 구절에서 ‘천명’ 이외에 동정하게 만드는 것은 없다고 단언하게 된다.

Jo Seong-ga (1824-1903) was one of Nosa's oldest disciples who stayed closest to Nosa and frequently asked him academic questions and get his academic position out, which Nosa himself had not been trying to reveal. The "Oepil," which focuses on Nosa’s theory of li-qi, was written by him to answer questions from his disciple, Jo Seong-ga. This paper seeks to find philosophical clues of the "Oepil" through questions and answers between them, and to show their differences regarding Neo-Confucianism.
Nosa was inspired by the questions of his disciple, Jo Seong-ga, and moved toward further strengthening li’s superintendence over qi. In their conversations, Nosa first said that Taiqi is not only an ultimate standard for the movement and stop of qi, but also makes qi move or stop. Later, however, Nosa argued that “The Heavenly Mandate”, connoting both Heaven and superintendence, is the best indication that li is the master of qi. Accordingly, “The Mandate of Heaven” is the concept by which li can regain the lost authority from qi. As a result, Nosa asserted that there is nothing to move or stop qi than “The Mandate of Heaven” in the first sentence of the “Oepil.”
In Jo Seong-ga’s opinion, Yulgok has fully revealed that li superintends qi because he said “The frame moves itself, but there is nothing to move it.” but also made it clear that li is the reason by which yin is quiet and yang is active. Therefore, it is not reasonable to evaluate Yulgok's theory as “qi-preferred one.” Nosa, on the other hand, thought Yulgok's theory does not clearly show the fact that li is above qi. Therefore, the expression “The frame of qi moves itself.” is not appropriate and is incompatible with “Li is the reason by which things are as they are.” Therefore, it is plausible to consider Yulgok's perspective as a “qi-preferred theory.”Nosa was inspired by the questions of his disciple, Jo Seong-ga, and moved toward further strengthening li’s superintendence over qi.
