김동리는 문제작가이다. 해방정국에서 고군분투하여 지켜낸 순수문학 진영의 맹주라는 권력을 기반으로 자신의 작품에 ‘구경적 생의 탐구’라는 권위를 더하여 고전의 반열에 오르게 했다. 또한, 서양의 신을 대체하는 ‘새로운 신’을 모색함으로써 한국문학사에 자신의 이름을 도드라지게 새겨 놓았다. 하지만 한편으로 그의 문학론은 반근대주의의 허울을 쓴 급진적 근대주의자의 문학론에 불과하며 그의 ‘새로운 신’ 역시 빛바랜 퇴영적 우상－무속신에 불과하다는 평가를 받는다.』
「무녀도」에 잔존하는 화랑도, 혹은 풍류정신은 그의 아버지격인 외형 김범부의 『화랑외사의 영향력이 지대하다. 『화랑외사』는 신라시대 화랑도를 중심으로 한 인물들의 생애를 구술하여 엮은 책이다. 자연과 조화를 이루어 하늘의 뜻에 거스르지 않고 살아가는 물계자의 삶은 인간사에 연연해하지 않고 탈속적으로 고아한 품격을 유지하는 화랑정신의 표본이다. 뛰어난 가문을 가지지도 않았고 공명심을 떨치기 위해 애를 쓰지도 않지만 국난을 당하면 용맹스럽게 싸우고 전공을 다투지 않음은 물론 다시 본디 자기 자리로 돌아와 생활하는 모습을 보인다. 김범부는 새나라 건설기에 이런 인물을 국가이념의 충실한 구현자로 내세우고 있는데, 이 자체가 진보와 지배 사이의 연관관계를 대변하는 것으로 과거로부터의 연속성을 담보로 하여 이루어진다. 이는 벤야민이 말한 분리와 단절을 통한 과거로의 도약과 반복을 통한 혁명의 과거 전유와는 거리가 멀고 현재의 영광을 위한 무훈으로 과거를 박제화시킨다는 점에서 탈역사화의 대표적인 사례라고 할 수 있다.
『화랑외사』의 ‘자기 충족적인 완결의 세계’에 대한 향수는 「무녀도」에도 이어져 액자소설의 내화 속에 자리잡게 된다. 그러나 먼 옛날의 소재와 구술되는 이야기의 특성을 가진전기체 서사인 『화랑외사』를 소설로 창작하는 과정에서 「무녀도」를 간섭하는 소설의 반어적 진실은 만만치가 않다. 주인공과 현실의 불협화음은 끊이지 않고 시끄러워 주인공의 삶을 복잡다단한 것으로 만드는 것이다. 그리하여 ‘완결의 세계’를 그리워하는 주인공의 고독만이 소설의 독후감으로 남는다.
바로 이러한 작가의 불편한 사정과 소설의 내적 요구가 결국에 「무녀도」의 개작을 야기하는 동인이다. 갈등이 없는 소설의 자기 충족성은 이야기에 불과하다는 것, 인과성의 요구에 충실할 수밖에 없는 소설의 속성을 개작과정을 통해 다듬으면서 「무녀도」의 시적 성격은 많이 산문적인 것으로 바뀐다. 그럼에도 불구하고 김동리의 이야기꾼은 사라지지 않고 남아서 무가의 형태를 통해 시적 아우라를 조성하게 하고 근본적으로는 ‘개인의 합리적 이해와 의지’를 가지고 무속의 세계를 포용하려는 전체로서의 총체성을 포기하지 않는다.
그렇게 되다 보니 ‘소설의 현실구성력과 그 불일치’로서의 의미는 사라지고 노작가의 끊임없는 이야기에 대한 향수가 발동되어 이른바 ‘김동리의 역사소설’이 쓰여지는 것이다.

영어초록

Dong Ri Kim is a writer coming to the spotlight. He put his works in classics by adding the authority of ‘Landscaping living investigation’to his works on the basis of the power that he became the leader of pure literature kept by put up a solitary struggle in the political situation of liberation. Also, he listed his own name in the Korean literature history by groping ‘New God’replacing the Western god. On the other hand, it is evaluated that his literature theory is nothing but a theory of a racial modernist with only name of anti-modernism and that his ‘New God’is nothing but a discolored conservative idol-shamanistic god.
Hwarangdo (The code of Silla chivalry) or the romantic mind remained in 「Munyeodo」 got an effect from 『Hwarang Oisa』by Bum Boo Kim who was his elder cousin like his father. 『Hwarang Oisa』 is a book which describes people’s lives based on Hwarangdo in the Silla age. A human life not going against the heaven’s will by harmonizing with nature is a model of Hwarang spirit keeping an elegant grace unworldly, not being reluctant to give up a human life. Though Hwarang is not a man of good family and doesn’t concentrate his efforts on making well-known in the world, he fights daringly and doesn’t quarrel with others to get credit for a war when his country is in difficulties. After the war is over, he returns to his original life again. Bum Boo Kim is distinguished such a person as a faithful person embodying a country’s principle in the period of constructing a new country, which is to speak for relations between progress and control. It realizes continuity from the past, regarding it as a warrant. It is away from the past appropriateness of innovation by jumping to and repeating the past through segregation and extinction mentioned by Walter Benjaminand is a representative case of post history in the point that it stuffs the past as a distinguished military service for the present glory.
Yearning for ‘Self-satisfactory completed world’ of 『Hwarang Oisa』secures its position within the inside of framework novel by being connected with 「Munyeodo」. However, the ironical truth of the novel interfering in 「Munyeodo」 in the process of creating 『Hwarang Oisa』, a biographical epic with old materials and characteristics of a story described orally, as a novel is of importance. A discord between a hero and reality is continued and is making a hero’s life complicatedly. Therefore, only solitude of a hero missing ‘The completed world’ is left over the novel’s impressions.
Consequently the inconvenient conditions of the writer and the internal demand of the novel cause the remaking of 「Munyeodo」. The self-satisfaction of the novel without conflict is nothing but a story. Thus, the poetic characteristic of 「Munyeodo」 is changed to be prosaic for the most part, refining properties of the novel that cannot help being faithful to causal demand through remaking. Nevertheless, Dong Ri Kim doesn’t give up generality as the whole of composing a poetic aura through a form of shamanistic song not disappearing and of embracing the shaman world with ‘Personal reasonable understanding and will’ fundamentally.
Therefore, the meaning as ‘Composing power of reality and disagreement with reality in the novel’ get disappeared and the old writer’s continuous yearning for a story is appeared. Thus, ‘Historical novel of Dong Ri Kim’ as it is called is born.
