초록

2023년 12월에 발간된 『시민과 함께 읽는 여순사건』은 지역의 역사에관심을 갖고 있는 일반 시민은 물론 대학생이나 교사를 위한 대체교과서성격을 갖는 대중서이다. 그런 만큼 필진도 역사학과 문학을 전공한 교수와 연구원을 비롯하여 여순사건 유가족, 여순사건위원회 전문위원, 지역신문 기자, 소설가 등 다양하다. 내용상으로도 새로운 시각을 제공하는글, 그동안의 연구성과를 정리하거나 재해석한 글, 문학작품과 구술자료를 통해 여순사건을 살펴본 글, 여순사건 특별법 관련 글, 지역사회의 목소리를 담아낸 글 등으로 구성한 특징이 있다. 이 책은 여순사건 이해에 필수적이고도 중심적인 내용을 정리하여 적절한 시기에 펴냈다는 점에서 의의가 있지만 몇 가지 점에서 약간의 아쉬움이 있다. 여순사건의 배경, 발발의 직접적인 원인으로 이해되고 있는 제주4·3을 소략하게 다루고 있으며, 여순사건 연구에서 중요한 점은 바로 여순사건 발발 후 전남 동부지역으로 확산되고 봉기군과 지역의 좌익, 지역민이 합세하여 대중운동으로 전화되었다는 점인데, 이에 대한 내용이 소략하다는 점 등이다. 앞으로 이러한 점을 보안하고 연구영역의 시공간을넓히는 방향으로 연구가 진행되는 것이 바람직할 것이다. 한편 여순사건특별법이 제정되면서 연구대상으로 필히 거론되어야 할중요한 문제가 있다. 그것은 바로 여순사건특별법에서 여순사건의 종점을지리산 입산금지가 해제된 1955년 4월 1일까지로 정하고 있는데, 그것이얼마나 타당한 지를 검토하는 일이다. 이와 관련하여 여순사건 연구를 빨치산 활동으로 확장해야 하며, 한국전쟁기와 휴전 이후의 시기에 전개된빨치산 활동이 여순사건과 어떠한 관계가 있는지 해명해야 한다. 그러자면 전라남북도, 경상도 일원에서 펼쳐진 빨치산 활동에 천착하여 연구를진행하면서 빨치산 활동에서 한국전쟁 이전과 이후의 성격 변화를 명확히밝혀야 한다.

영어초록

Reading the Yosun Incident with Citizens , published in December 2023, is a popular book that has the character of an alternative textbook for undergraduate students and teachers as well as general citizens interested in local history. As such, the authors are diverse, including professors and researchers in history and literature, bereaved families of the Yosun Incident, expert members of the Yosun Incident Committee, local newspaper reporters, and novelists. In terms of content, it is characterized by articles that offer new perspectives, articles that summarize or reinterpret previous research, those that examine the Yosun Incident through literature and oral materials, those related to the Special Act on the Yosun Incident , and those that capture the voices of local communities, and so on.
This book is significant in that it summarizes essential and central content for understanding the Yosun Incident and was published at an appropriate time, but it is somewhat disappointing in some respects.
The background of the Yosun Incident and the Jeju April 3 incident, which is considered to be the direct cause of the outbreak, are briefly covered. The important point in studying the Yosun incident is that afterthe incident broke out, it spread to the eastern part of Jeollanam-do and was joined by the insurgents, local leftists and local residents. The point is that it turned into a mass movement, but the details of it are short. In the future, it would be desirable to continue research in a direction that secures these points and expands the space and time of the research area.
Meanwhile, with the enactment of the Special Act on the Yosun Incident , there are important issues that need to be addressed as research subjects. That is, the Special Act on the Yosun Incident set the end point of the Yosun Incident as April 1, 1955, when the ban on entering Mt. Jiri was lifted. This is to check how reasonable it is. In this connection, we must expand the study of the Yosun incident to include partisan activities and clarify the relationship between partisan activities during the Korean War and the post-armistice period and the Yosun Incident. To this end, we must conduct research by studying the activities of partisans in Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsang-do, and clearly show the changes in the nature of partisan activities before and after the Korean War.
