윤봉길 의거에 대한 국내외 언론의 반응 - 국내와 구미 언론을 중심으로 - (he reactions of domestic and foreign media toward a patriotic deed of martyr Yoon Bong-gil - Focus on the domestic media and U.S. and European media -)

초록

윤봉길 의거는 한국독립운동사에 있어서 3・1운동 만큼이나 국내와 국외에서 큰 파장과 영향을 미쳤다. 그리고 일본이 만주침략을 단행한 직후 상해사변까지 일으켜 본격적인 대륙 침략에 돌입하려는 때에 발생함으로써 국제적으로 큰 주목을 받았다.
본 글은 기왕에 연구된 중국과 일본의 언론을 제외하고 식민지 조선, 즉, 국내의 언론과 미국과 유럽의 언론 속에 나타난 윤봉길 의거 보도 내용들을 분석해 정리한 것이다. 이를 통해 관련국의 입장에 따라 언론들이 윤봉길 의거를 어떻게 바라보고 기사화하였는지, 그리고 그것이 가지는 성격과 의미가 무엇이었는지를 살펴본 것이다.
국내 언론의 경우 의거를 보도한 시기를 세분화해서 고찰하였다. 민족 언론인『 동아일보』, 『조선일보』, 『중앙일보』의 경우는 가능한 윤봉길 의거에 담긴 한국독립운동의 실상을 보도하는데 역점을 두고 보도하고 있음을 밝혔다. 반면 조선총독부 기관지 『경성일보』와 『매일신보』는 일본인의 피해 상황과 정전협정의 진행에 초점을 두고 보도하였다.
구미 언론에 대해선 주제별로 분류해 고찰하였다. 구미 언론은 의거 직후 곧바로 신문 1면 전면이나 각 면에 윤봉길 의거를 대대적으로 보도하였다. 미국 언론을 제외하고 윤봉길 의거를 대체로 ‘테러’로 규정하였고 의거 동기에 대해선 일부 언론을 제외하고 대체로 침묵하거나 외면하는 편이었다. 대신 주로 일본인의 피해상황 위주로 보도하였다. 구미 언론의 주된 관심사는 중일 간체 중단된 정전협상의 재개였다. 그들에게 윤봉길 의거는 정정협상을 방해하는 방해꾼으로 보일 뿐이었다.
윤봉길 의거는 ‘상해사변’을 일으킨 일본이 중국과 수차례 정전협상을 추진하다 마침내 4월 30일 상하이에서 타결을 눈앞에 둔 때 일어난 거사였다. 때문에 구미 언론의 주된 관심은 부상당한 일본인에 대한 동정과 더불어 중・일 간에 추진 중이던 정전협상의 추이였다. 이런 사실을 잘 알고 있던 일본 정부는 윤봉길 의거의 혼란에도 불구하고 정전협상을 속개할 것이라는 방침을 신속히 공표하고 하루 빨리 혼돈스런 상황을 정돈시키려 하였다.
당시 국제 상황을 비추어 볼 때 윤봉길 의거는 일본 정부나 국제사회에 매우 충격적이고 당혹스런 사건이었다. 구미 언론은 윤봉길 의거 발발 직후 거의 1면의 톱 뉴스로 보도하여 윤봉길 의거를 전 세계 최고의 화제 거리로 만들었다. 그런 점 때문에 굳이 애써 드려내고 싶지 않았던 독립과 자유를 향한 한국인의 치열한 투쟁과 한국인의 독립 열망을 직・간접적이나마 보도하지 않을 수 없었다.
구미언론에 나타난 윤봉길 의거 보도 경향을 보면 과거 3・1운동 때와 마찬가지로 전 세계에 영향을 미칠 만큼 ‘국제성’을 가진 독립운동이었다는 점이다. 이것은 한국독립운동사에 있어서 윤봉길 의거를 왜 높이 평가해야 하는지를 입증하는 좋은 사례가 아닐 수 없다.

The patriotic deed of Martyr Yoon Bong-gil had a big impact and effect in both domestic and foreign countries as much as 3・1 Independence Movement. It attracted international attention because it happened at the time when Japan tried to start a full-scale invasion of continent after it had invaded Manchu and caused Shanghai incident right after.
This article analyzed and arranged the contents of press reports about patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil; in other words, domestic media and U.S. and European media except those of China and Japan which had been studied before. Through this, it examined how media of each country saw the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil according to its own positions and how they covered it up and what the characters and meanings of them were.
In the case of domestic media report, it contemplated the incident by time period, dividing it small parts of time. The domestic media, Dong-A Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, Jungang Ilbo defined their positions that they reported the incident, emphasizing the real facts of Korean independence movement in the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil. While Governor-General of Korea organ, Gyeongseong Ilbo and Maeil Sinbo reported it focusing on the damages of Japan and the development of a cease-fire agreement.
This research studied the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil by the topics for the U.S. and European media. The U.S. and European media reported the incident on the first page of the news paper or a whole page in a large scale right after the incident. Except the media of U.S., most of the media regulated it as ‘terror’ and they had tendencies to keep silent or turn away about the motive of the incident excluding some papers. They reported the damages of Japan instead because the main concern of them were the resume of cease-fire negotiation which had been stopped between China and Japan. To them, the incident seemed mere disrupter which interrupted cease-fire agreement.
The patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil happened on April 30th. when the negotiation conclusions were close after Japan had caused Shanghai incident and it pursued the cease-fire agreement several times with China. Therefore, the main concerns of The U.S. and European media was the sympathy toward Japanese who were wounded by the incident and the development of the cease-fire negotiation between China and Japan. The Japanese Government which knew this very well tried to arrange the chaotic situation as soon as possible, announcing the policy that the cease-fire negotiation will be soon continued in spite of the disorder by the Yoon Bong-gil incident.
Viewed in the historic light of that time, the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil was a shocking and confusing incident for both Japan and international society. The U.S. and European media made the incident as a top conversation piece of the world, reporting it top news of the main page right after the outbreak of the incident. Because of that they could not help reporting the Korean’s fierce fight for the independence and freedom even if they did not want to. They had to report Korean people’s desire directly or indirectly.
The report tendency of the U.S. and European media on the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil was that it was the Independence Movement which has ‘internationality’ affecting whole world like the 3.1 movement. It is a good example that proves why we have to highly appreciate the patriotic deed of Yoon Bong-gil in Korean Independence History.
