남성적 외금강과 여성적 내금강― 근대기 금강산의 젠더 표상 (The Masculine Outer Kumgang and theFeminine Inner Kumgang: the Gender Symbolism of Mt. Kumgang in Modern Period)

초록

본 연구는 금강산을 ‘외금강=남성, 남성적, 남성미’, ‘내금강=여성, 여성적, 여성미’로 인식하는 경향성에 주목하여 이러한 이분법적 시각의 형성과정을 추적하고, 상대적으로 외금강에 부여된 우월한 위상이 근대기 이후의 시각문화와도 긴밀하게 연동되고 있음을 지적한다. 일제강점기에 이르러 젠더(Gender)는 금강산의 경관을 채택하고 경험하는 렌즈로 작용하여, 근대적이고 장대한 암석미의 외금강, 과거와 전설이 머물러 있고 얌전한 계곡미를 갖춘 내금강이라는 차별적인 표상을 구축하는 도구로 활용되었기 때문이다.
이처럼 금강산에 사회적인 성별, 즉 젠더의 개념이 도입되는 시점은 총독부의 주관 아래 외금강 중심의 금강산 관광을 도모한 1910년대 중반 이후로 판단된다. 암석과 나무의 많고 적음, 바위의 빛깔과 모양은 외산과 내산을 비교하는 지표가 되었으며, 일제강점기 금강산 개발의 진행과정에서 젠더의 보편적 인식에 부합하는 경관들의 특징은 더욱 부각되었다. 이에 외금강은 산악미가 빼어나고, 내금강은 계곡미가 아름답다는 심미적 기준이 등장하고, 외금강의 산악미를 대변하는 만물상, 내금강의 계곡미를 드러내는 만폭동이 대표 경관으로 부상한다.
금강산 권역을 차별적으로 인식하면서 시각문화와 교차하는 지점 역시 포착되는데, 사진엽서, 사진첩, 안내서와 같은 시각물은 물론 회화 작품에서도 외금강 이미지는 우선적으로 선별된다. 근대기 금강산 여행안내서는 외금강을 먼저 방문하고 내금강으로 향하는 반전된 여정을 順路로 제안하기도 했다. 따라서 각 폭 구성의 금강산도 병풍에서는 금강산 명소 구성의 오랜 전통과 근대인들에게 익숙한 금강산 여행의 새로운 면모들이 대립하는 양상이 발견된다.

영어초록

This study takes note of the tendency to recognize the areas of Outer Kumgang and the Inner Kumgang of Mt. Kumgang as “Outer Kumgang = Man, Masculine, Masculinity” and “Inner Kumgang = Woman, Feminine, Femininity” to track the formation of such dichotomous viewpoint and comments on the close connection between the relatively superior status imbued on the Outer Kumgang and the visual culture after the modern period. At the time of Japanese Colonial Occupation in Korea, gender functioned as the lens which selected and constructed the representative landscapes of Mt. Kumgang, utilized as a tool which constructed a differential symbolism of Outer Kumgang with its modern and grand rocks and Inner Kumgang where the past and myth resides in calm valleys.
The time period in which the concept of social sex, or gender, begins to be applied on Mt. Kumgang is considered to be post mid-1910s, when the Japanese colonial government-general had begun planning the vitalization of tourism to Mt. Kumgang, centered around the Outer Kumgang. The numbers of rocks and trees, the colors and shapes of the rocks served as indices for comparing the outer and the inner mountains; in the process of developing Mt. Kumgang as a tourist attraction, the characteristics which corresponded to gender is generally recognized were emphasized. Thus aesthetic standards, which described Outer Kumgang as having outstanding mountainous beauty and Inner Kumgang as having alluring beauty in the valleys, began to appear; Manmulsang, which is an exemplary mountainous beauty of the Outer Kumgang, and Manpokdong, showing the beautiful valley of Inner Kumgang, rose as the representative landscapes.
An intersection between differential recognition of the areas of Mt. Kumgang and visual culture can also be observed; in visual materials, such as photo postcards, photo album, guidebooks, and even paintings, the images of Outer Kumgang were selected preferentially. The travel guide for Mt. Kumgang, published under the influences of the government-general and the railway bureau, had suggested a reversed route of visiting the Outer Kumgang prior to Inner Kumgang as the regular route. This results in a tense conflict between old traditions in forming attractions of Mt. Kumgang and the new aspects of touring Mt. Kumgang familiar to modern audience, found in the folding screens of Mt. Kumgang depicting the attractions in each of the screens.
