초록

This study examines what impact Chinese society’s experience with the ‘South- ern Wako’( nanwo 南倭) had on Chinese reactions to the Imjin War.
The difficulty of pushing back the Southern Wako left a great impact on Chi- nese society. ‘Wako scares(倭警)’ which means the fears that the Wako could in- vade Chinese coastal waters at anytime, lasted up until and even after the Imjin War. In such circumstances the Chinese published researches on the Japanese is- lands to protect against the southern wako from the mid-16 th century. Of these researches, Juhaedopyeon (籌海圖編) and other pieces of research on Japan were published and provided information on the southern wako.
When the Japanese military invaded the Korean Peninsula in 1592, Chinese government assumed that the Japanese army essentially to be the same as the southern wako. This is evidenced by the publication of sequels to Juhaedopyon, such as Juhaejungpyeon (籌海重編).
As a result, the Chinese attempted to use the same methods of appeasement and trickery they had used against the southern wako during the Imjin War. Ulti- mately, the Chinese experience with the wako and the information obtained about Japan led the Chinese to choose reconciliation, not war.
