In the Grail Quest of Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, women are excluded before the quest begins by King Arthur and all of his knights. It is because the chivalry and the chivalric community in Arthurian kingdom regard women as so weak and vulnerable beings who always need male knights' help. However, in fact, some women characters including some gentle women, female hermits, and several damsels are portrayed in the Grail Quest. Moreover, these women own different kinds of power and represent them autonomously. More ironically, the chivalric community relies on these women's power.
For example, the gentle woman who appeared in the third episode of the Grail Quest, 「Sir Perceval」, provides an important opportunity for Perceval to become more qualified knight with sincere faith for God. Perceval's Aunt owns the power of the profound knowledge, wisdom, and the special oratorical talent to express her knowledge and wisdom. She uses her power to help Perceval to accomplish his quest with Sir Galahad. The gentle woman Sir Lancelot has met during the Grail Quest fortells the incidents which might happen to him, and a female hermit also helps Lancelot to become the best knight who owns not only the courage as a worldly knight but also the faithful mind as a religious knight. Finally, Perceval's Sister owns the deep and sincere faith and strong will as a 'female-subject'. She guides the quest to Sir Perceval, Sir Galagad, and Sir Bors accompanying them throughout their journey until all of them find and see the Holy Grail.
On those grounds, I argue that the chivalric community which is represented by King Arthur and his knights of Arthurian kingdom shows the self-contradiction by depending on these women's power which it denied by itself from the first. After all, it might be said that Malory tried to reveal that the Arthurian male-centered bond cannot be maintained without women's mutual assistance even though the chivalric community continuously attempts to control and suppress Arthurian women and their power by regarding them as feeble and passive.
