王弼의 本末觀 -崇本息末과 崇本擧末을 중심으로- (A Study on 'the theory of essence-end' in Wang-Bi)

왕필의 본말관은 그의 다양한 철학적 주제들 가운데 하나이다. 그런데 왕필 자신의 애매한 표현과 연구자들의 다양한 해석으로 인해 그 설명이 다양하고 혼란스럽다. 왕필의 본말관은 인식론, 방법론, 본체론, 정치철학, 도덕철학 등 다양한 시각에서 연구되고 있다.
왕필의 본말관과 관련된 표현은 아주 많은데, 그 중에서 崇本息末과 崇本擧末이 가장 대표적인 표현이다. 그리고 本末을 흔히 母子로 비유하고 있다. 왕필의 본말관에서 논란의 핵심은 息字의 의미에 대한 해석과 관련되어 있다. 이 글자는 ①그치다, 멈추다라는 부정적 의미와 동시에 ②일으키다, 자라다라는 긍정적 의미도 함께 가지고 있다. 왕필은 경우에 따라서 ①과 ②의 두 가지 용법을 다 사용한 것으로 보인다.
息字를 ①의 용법으로 사용할 때는 말엽을 제거해야 뿌리가 튼튼해진다는 본․말 분리적 관점이다. 이 경우에는 왕필의 도가 지향적 입장이 강하게 반영되어 있다. 반면에 息字를 ②의 용법으로 사용할 때는 뿌리를 북돋워서 말엽을 자라게 한다는 본․말 통합적 관점이다. 이 경우에는 왕필의 儒․道 통합적 입장이 반영되어 있다. 그리고 息字를 ②의 의미로 사용할 때는 崇本息末을 崇本擧末 및 守母存子와 같은 차원에서 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

Wang-Bi's the theory of essence-end is one of his main interests in philosophy. I think there are all-inclusiveness and complex layers of reference in his theory, and so it is considered to have various interpretations according to scholars' approaches. Nowadays his theory is looked into in many terms such as epistemology, methodology, metaphysics, theory of politics, and ethics, etc.
A main key to understand his theory rightly seems to be in the terms 'chong ben xi mo' (the essence is first and the end is also valuable and important) and 'chong ben ju mo', (only the essence is valuable and important), his two most representative concepts, I think. He often compares the concept 'essence' to 'a mother' and the 'end' to 'a child'. The chinese verb xi (be valuable and important) has two meanings, which are crucial to investigate Wang-bi's theory. It's meaning has positive aspect and negative, too. On the positive aspect, it can be understood as 'stop' or 'cease', and on the negative one, as 'raise' or 'grow'. Wang-Bi uses both meanings in his workings putting different weigh on it's meaning, which can cause controversial argument among descendants.
In this study what I mainly tried to do is to differentiate his usage of xi into two significant point of view according to the xi's aspects of meaning. One is 'essence-end independent':negative, the other is 'essence-end integrative':positive. According to the former, the essence is first of all, and the end is not considered as being valuable and important, and so the end is an objective to be ignored or removed. According to the latter, the essence is first of all with no doubt, but also the end is very valuable and important. So in this point, the end is an objective to be encouraged or flourished. When Wang-bi wanted to emphasize Chuang-tzu centered meaning, he uses 'chong ben xi mo' into 'essence-end independent' meaning. But when he was in the need of harmonization for Confucious and Chuang-tzu together, he uses 'chong ben xi mo' into 'essence-end integrative' meaning. If we read Wang-bi's workings on this integrative view, the following three concepts 'chong ben xi mo', 'chong ben ju mo' and 'shou mu cun zi' could be understood as to have the same kind of level.
