수묵 기법을 활용한 디지털 일러스트레이션 연구 -장왕의 <전세불마>를 중심으로- (Digital illustration research using Ink-Wash Painting techniques. -Focusing on Zhang Wang’s “Chuan Shi Fo Mo”-)

초록

수묵 기법은 오래된 중국 전통 회화 기법으로, 중국의 심미안을 나타낸 종합예술임과 동시에 중국 고유의 예술을 시각적으로 표현하고 중국의 문화 이미지를 발전시키고 제시할 수 있는 적절한 기법이다.
수묵화를 통해 시대상과 시대정신을 읽어낼 수 있듯이, 현대의 디지털 일러스트레이션에서 수묵 기법을 활용하고 창작하는 것 또한 단순한 과거의 반복이 아니라 현대적인 방식을 통해 새로운 형식과 해석을 부여하여 현대의 시대상을 담을 수 있다. 따라서 디지털 기법 활용에 대한 연구는 수묵화의 현대화를 위한 방향 제시 자료로도 활용할 수 있다.
본 연구는 수묵 기법 중에서 중국의 수묵화가 장왕의 작품 <전세불마>의 선, 색채, 여백, 화선지 활용에 대해 중점적으로 분석하였다. 장왕은 중국에서 가장 유명한 수묵화 디지털 일러스트레이터 중의 한 사람이다. 또한 ‘귀재 화가’, ‘유명 화가’, ‘디지털 중국화의 첫 번째 인물’로 불린다. 대표적인 사례로 이 작품을 선택한 이유는 장왕이 중국의 전통 수묵 기법과 서양 인물의 이미지 결합을 시도한 최초의 중국 전통 수묵화 양식 「동학서점(東學西漸)」 중 디지털 일러스트레이션의 가장 핵심적인 작품이기 때문이다 .
본 연구를 통해 <전세불마(傳世佛魔)>는 현대적인 인물 형상 창작과정과 전통적 수묵 기법을 결합한 독특한 일러스트레이션으로 이를 분석, 연구함으로써 전통적인 기법이 현대적으로 발전할 가능성을 제시하는 데 연구 의의가 있다. 또한, 중국 전통 수묵이 가지는 선, 색채, 여백, 화선지 활용의 예술과 디지털이 결합한 새로운 현대 디지털 일러스트레이션 기법을 제안함으로써, 전통문화 요소를 현대적으로 발전시키고 활성화할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다.

영어초록

Illustrations stimulate viewers’ emotions through freshness, so they should be innovated with the times. Traditional paintings can serve as a reference for illustration creation. Digital illustration has absorbed the expressive techniques of traditional Chinese painting and has been injected with fresh vitality.
“Chuan Shi Fo Mo” is of great significance to both Zhang Wang himself and the Chinese digital illustration world. Overall, the publication of “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” can be said to be a meaningful attempt to illustrate Chinese tradition. “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” is a book. Zhang Wang’s paintings reflect his views on traditional Chinese art. Unlike Western Transformers, Zhang Wang used Chinese ink-wash techniques creatively. Zhang Wang studied the aesthetic spirit of Chinese ancient art and the style of Chinese ancient art and tried to express Chinese ancient art with modern techniques. In the work “Chuan Shi Fo Mo”, the image of “Transformers” is reproduced using ink-and-wash techniques.
First of all, this study interprets Zhangwang’s illustration based on prior research on modern illustration of ink painting techniques and discusses how lines, colors, spaces, and paper, which are the representative elements of ink painting, are reflected in his work “Chuan Shi Fo Mo”. The following results were obtained through a comparative interpretation of the ink-and-wash techniques in The Devils of the World.
The line-drawing technique of “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” is called “Orchid leaf line drawing” in “meticulous painting”, which corresponds to the “gospel” technique in ink-and-wash painting. “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” focuses on thinking about lines. The soft and powerful lines of the characters form the basis of the illustration and give the work a sense of direction. Based on the Transformers’ Optimus Prime and Megatron prototypes, the color of the movie reduces color saturation and reduces the thrill of the illustration. The entire illustration is antique in color, the character’s large body, and the clean brushwork harmonizes with the coarse and yellowed flower fan material to create a unique visual effect. The margin used in “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” played two roles. First, the “empty” in the background contrasts strongly with the “real” of the character. This imaginary space also serves to expand the psychological space of the audience. Second, if change the illustration into black and white, you’ll find it. The white part is mainly painted in dark colors, and the characters are painted in bright colors, allowing the audience to focus on the characters. The texture of “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” imitates the effects of the paper, giving the whole illustration a sense of obsolescence. Gum spray was used to describe delicate characters. The opacity was reduced, treated less clearly, and the walls protruded. The mottled face adds an old-fashioned feel to the work.
Through the fusion of color, line, margin, and Xuanzhi, “Chuan Shi Fo Mo” has brought a new feeling to the audience who are already familiar with modern illustrations and has become a work that combines modern aesthetics and traditional Chinese culture.
“Chuan Shi Fo Mo” is a unique illustration that combines the process of creating modern characters and traditional ink-wash techniques, which is of great significance to presenting the possibility of the modern development of traditional techniques.
In addition, this study provides some direction for similar works in China. Regrettably, I have not studied deeply the traditional ink-wash techniques due to my lack of translation ability in ancient Chinese. Therefore, the shortcomings of this study will be considered set aside for future work.
