In Goryeo, the king placed Jinjeon (眞殿) in a specific temple for his deceased parents and placed portraits there. And every year, when his parents passed away, the king came to Jinjeon and held a ceremony and funeral. This event was considered important enough to be legislated.
On the one hand, there is the Stele of Hyeonhwa-sa (玄化寺碑), built in 1031. Here, King Hyeonjong’s filial piety is written using the concepts and terms of Confucianism and Buddhism. Through this, King Hyeonjong is revealed to be both a filial son and a divine monarch in the sense of Confucianism and Buddhism. His reign asserts that it is a state of ‘govern the world with the value of filial piety(孝理天下)’ where he is well governed in Confucian and Buddhist terms.
The king’s filial piety is expressed through a ceremony held on the anniversary of the late king’s death. There are two main rituals here. One is the ritual (Jakheon-ui, 酌獻儀) in which the king comes to Jinjeon and raises a glass of wine, and the other is the ritual (Sangpyo-ui, 上表儀) in which he receives documents from his subjects consoling the king on the anniversary of his death.
On the anniversary of the death of the late king, the king receives a document acknowledging his filial piety from his vessels. Through this ceremony, the king’s authority based on filial piety is recognized, and furthermore, it creates an opportunity to transform the loyalty of his vessels based on the king’s personal filial piety. And the king goes to Jinjeon and shows his filial piety toward the late king. Through this ceremony, the king secures legitimacy. Ultimately, these two ceremonies become an opportunity and a venue to strengthen the king’s authority as the king’s personal filial piety and the loyalty of his vessels intersect.
