    초록

Yeo(later King Hyo-Gong) a concubine son of King Hunkang of Silla was appointed as a crown prince by Queen Jin-Sung in 895, and crowned two years later as the queen abdicated. The aim of this article was to examine the background and process of Yeo's promotion to the kingship.

Firstly, the record of History of the Three Kingdoms that no sooner Queen Jin-Sung had the idea of Yeo's existence than she appointed him as the crown prince proved wrong. The royal family of Silla had known Yeo's existence since he was born. The main reason why he was appointed as the crown prince as late as the 9th year of Queen Jin-Sung seems to be that it took time for Yeo who was a concubine son to establish a justification as an legitimate successor to King Hunkang.

Secondly, there had been three stages in the development of perception on the legitimate successor to King Hunkang. According to the records made during the reign of King Chungkang and the first two years of Queen Jin-Sung, brother and sister's successions were considered as legitimate. King Chungkang and Queen Jin-Sung, a brother and a sister of King Hunkang, they were acknowledged as the lawful successors to King Hunkang. From the fifth year of Queen Jin-Sung Yeo was begun to be seen as an legitimate successor to King Hunkang, as he was portrayed to have inherited a national treasure from his father, and to have a character of royal successor. However, this developed further after the seventh year of Queen Jin-Sung. Now, Yeo was begun to be seen as the only legitimate successor to King Hunkang, and Queen Jin-Sung was seen as a temporary ruler.

Thirdly, the social upheaval in the period of Queen Jin-Sung also contributed the promotion of Yeo. The period saw the collapse of control system over the local lords as they became increasingly independent. Besides the queen had been in illness. This explains why the queen declared that Yeo was the lawful successor to the King Hunkang according to the law of the Bone-Rank Status, and abdicated herself in two years later. Therefore the appointment of the crown prince and abdication were political events prepared by the queen with some supportive powerful persons.
