초록

이 연구는 봉준호 감독의 <옥자>에 나타난 생태학과 에코페미니즘 관점에서 살펴보았다. <옥자>는 주인공인 소녀, ‘미자’와 슈퍼 돼지인 ‘옥자’를 중심으로 종을 뛰어넘는 연대와 우정, 그리고 사랑의 의미는 사건과 공간의 상징화되면서 이야기가 전개된다. ‘미자’는 남성과 여성이 혼재된 혹은 통합된 양성성을 가진다. ‘옥자’는 미자의 가족처럼 서로를 위하는 공동체 관계이다. 이들이 가진 자연과 동물들에 대한 존경과 더불어 사랑과 애정을 잘 표현해 주고 있다. 이 영화는 인간의 관점이 아닌 돼지 ‘옥자’의 관점에서 생명의 원천이며 근원인 자연으로 인간이 회귀해야 함을 표현하고 있다.
<옥자>는 서구 문명의 근간인 인간중심주의에서 심층생태학적으로 혹은 자연 중심주의로의 급격한 변화가 일어나고 있음을 예시해준다. 이 영화는 인간의 관점이 아닌 동물이 속한 자연의 관점의 영화이다. 이는 자연과 인간은 동격이거나 아니면 자연을 인간만큼 소중한 존재로 승격시킴으로써 기존의 관습적 생각을 해체시키고 전복시키려는 노력의 일환이다. 이 영화는 자연과 함께 공유하고 더불어 살아가는 공동체의 삶이 만족스럽고 충족 되어지는 삶의 최종점임을 보여준다.
자연중심적인 발상을 통하여 자연은 인간과 더불어 상생할 수 있는 공동체적 삶의 터전이다. ‘미자’와 ‘옥자가 사는 산골과 모험의 뉴욕은 유토피아와 디스토피아의 이분법적 공간이다. 이는 상징권력에 대한 거부로서의 에코토피아를 보여준다. 뉴욕은 거대자본주의와 결탁한 신제국주의라는 상징공간이다. 이윽고 미자, 옥자, 새끼돼지는 산골마을로 돌아온다. 그들이 사는 산골마을은 인간과 동물이 공존하는 에코토피아를 상징한다. 그러므로 영화<옥자>는 자연의 세계로 이끌어가는 여성의 역할을 통하여 인간과 자연, 남성과 여성, 인간과 인간이 함께 공존할 수 있다는 생태중심적인 비전을 보여준다.

영어초록

This study examines ecology and eco-feminism as depicted in Okja, a film directed by Bong Joon Ho. The plot develops as it explores the species-transcendent connection, friendship, and love between Mija, the movie’s heroine and Okja, the genetically enhanced “Super-Pig” and examines the meaning of their relationship through symbolization of events and space. Mija is assigned an androgynous identity in which masculinity and femininity coexist. The bond that the beast has with the child can be described as that of the most tightly-knit community in which the former is considered by the latter as part of her family. It effectively demonstrates the respect as well the love and affection both of the characters have for Mother Nature and all of its creatures. That the mankind must return to nature, which is the source and origin of all life, is the message conveyed by the film, presented not from the perspective of humans but rather from that of Okja the Super-Pig.
Okja is an example of the rapid shift in contemporary narratives toward a paradigm that is more ecologically conscious or eco-centric while moving away from the traditional approach of anthropocentrism. The exposition of the story occurs from the viewpoint of nature and its creatures rather than that of man. It is an endeavor to dismantle the traditional and existing notions about nature and man by creating an allegory in which the two are one and the same, or at least the former’s importance is raised to an equal level with the latter. The film shows a communal lifestyle where one does not exploit but lives in harmony with nature and presents it as the final goal to be reached as one strives to live a life of contentment and fulfillment.
Eco-centric thinking makes it possible to conceive nature as the time-space for a communal life where man and nature can coexist. The home village of Mija and Okja in the mountains and the megalopolis that is New York are the dichotomy of space that represents Utopia and Dystopia respectively, which introduces Ecotopia as that which rejects symbolic power. New York is a symbolic space that represents Neo-imperialism that has colluded with Mega-capitalism. The two protagonists, the female child and her animal companion eventually return to their home village in the valleys, a place that symbolizes an ecotopia where man and beasts can form a conjoint community. By showcasing a new role for the female gender, which is to spearhead the movement that calls for mankind’s return to nature, Okja envisions a possible eco-centric future where man and nature, both genders of male and female, and all members of mankind can live together peacefully.
