초록

이 논문은 연민 이가원 선생의 저술인 『옥류산장시화』에 수록된 매화 제재 시를 정리하고, 이에 대한 특징에 대해 살펴봄으로써 매화시에 대한 연민의 관점은 어떠한가를 살핀 것이다.
매화는 우리나라 한시에서 다양한 상징적 의미를 지닌 시적 제재로 다분하게 쓰였다. 그렇기에 우리나라 마지막 시화집인 『옥류산장시화』의 여러 기사에도 매화는 다양하게 등장하고 있다. 그러므로 『옥류산장시화』의 매화시가 지닌 특징을 분석하는 것은 매화시에 대한 연민의 관점을 살펴볼 수 있는 동시에, 우리나라 매화시의 전체적인 조망이 가능할 것이라 보았다.
먼저 연민은 퇴계 매화시의 연원을 밝혔다. 퇴계는 주희의 성리학을 집대성한 인물로, 주희의 성리학뿐만 아니라 시문학에도 정통한 인물이다. 아울러 매화시를 다작하고 이를 선별하여 시첩을 만들었을 정도로 매화시에 대한 성취도 출중하였다. 특히 분재, 매화문답시 같은 경우는 당대는 물론 후대 문인들의 기풍과 취미에도 영향을 미쳤다.
다음으로 연민은 매화를 고향을 떠올리게 하는 대상으로 여겼다. 퇴계의 후손인 연민은 퇴계 못지않게 매화를 아꼈으며, 매화를 집안의 꽃으로 삼았기도 하였다. 그렇기에 연민에게 있어 매화는 곧, 자신의 집안과 고향을 상징하는 대상으로 보았다. 따라서 이런 상징성을 띠는 매화시를 선별하여 자신의 시화집에 수록한 것이다.
마지막으로 고난을 견디는 상징물로서의 매화이다. 연민은 매화가 고난과 인고의 세월을 견디고 마침내 개화하는 면모를 좋아하였다. 이는 식민지 말기를 살았던 연민의 삶의 행적과도 닮아있다. 매화의 추위와 고난, 외로움을 견디고 끝내 개화하는 특징을 높게 평가한 것이다. 시화집에 수록한 매화 제재의 시도 이러한 측면에서 선별된 것으로 보인다.
결과적으로 연민은 자신이 바라본 매화의 상징과 비슷한 매화시들을 자신의 시화집에 수록하였다. 이렇듯 연민은 『옥류산장시화』에 우리나라 매화 제재 시화 다수를 기술함으로써 매화에 대한 자신의 관점을 녹여내었으며, 고려시대부터 근대기까지 우리나라 매화시의 전체적인 조망을 가능하게 하였다.

영어초록

This thesis analyzes the poems on plum blossoms in Okryusanjangsihwa, written by Yeonmin, Lee Ga-won, and examines the perspective of Yeonmin regarding poetry on plum blossoms by examining the characteristics of these poems.
Plum blossoms are widely used in Korean poetry as poetic material, with various symbolic meanings, such as “constancy,” “fidelity,” and “detachment.” Okryusanjangsihwa is a vast writing of 792 articles covering Korean poetry from the ancient to the modern, and is the fruit of Yeonmin’s academic achievements. It is the last book of poetry criticism in Korea; at the same time, it is an independent collection of poetry criticism created by Yeonmin by referring to the existing poetry criticism of earlier times. Therefore, plum blossoms appear in various articles in Okryusanjangsihwa. Hence, analysis of the characteristics of the plum blossoms poetry in Okryusanjangsihwa is considered to give insight into the perspective of Yeonmin toward plum blossoms poetry and provide an overall view of such poetry in Korea.
First, Yeonmin revealed the origin of Toegye's plum blossoms poetry. Toegye compiled Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism and is well-versed in it, as well as in poetry. He was prolific in plum blossoms poetry, and his achievements were so outstanding that he selected them to make an album of poems. In the case of bonsai and plum blossoms conversation poetry, it influenced the ethos and hobbies of writers of the time as well as later generations.
Next, Yeonmin regarded plum blossoms as objects that reminded people of their hometown. Yeonmin, a descendant of Toegye, cherished plum blossoms as much as did Toegye. Therefore, for Yeonmin, plum blossoms were a symbol of his family and hometown. He selected poems with such symbolism and recorded them in his collection of poems.
Lastly, the plum blossom is a symbol of enduring hardship. Yeonmin liked the distinct characteristic of the plum blossoms, wherein they endured years of hardship and finally bloomed. As the basis for this, we cite anecdotes that did not yield to external oppression or adversity, such as having to live a secluded life in the late colonial period, and an unemployed life due to political power.
As a result, Yeonmin included poems on plum blossoms that reflect his views on plum blossoms in his book of poetry criticism. In this way, Yeonmin expressed his perspective on plum blossoms by describing many Korean plum blossom poems in Okryusanjangsihwa, and provided the overall view of plum blossoms poetry in Korea from the Goryeo period to the modern period.
