초록

미국에 전체적으로 퍼져있는 단일 신화는 청교도의 사명이라든가 미국의 건국 신화처럼 다소 인위적인 긍정성을 띤 총체적인 이야기로서 미국 국민들에게 미국을 메타서사를 통해 이해시키려는 것들인데, 이런 사실은 미국 서부의 정체성에 있어서도똑같이 적용되고 있다. 따라서 미국 서부는 지역성을 이야기할 때 오랫동안 미국의 정치적, 경제적, 문화적 위치에 있어 주류를 이루고 있는 앵글로색슨 영국계인 WASP(White Anglo-Saxon Protestant)를 중심 위치에 둔 단일 신화가 하나의 담론으로 되어 있다. 그리고 이런 담론에서는 미국 서부의 정체성이 남성과 백인 중심의 지배 담론의 체계 속에 갇힌 채 실제적인 사실과 다양한 이야기들을 배제시키도록 하고 있다. 하지만 오늘날 지역성을 이야기할 때 오로지 한 가지로 총체화 시키려는 이런 신화적 요소를 배제하고 다양성과 다원주의가 요구되고 있다. 지역주의는 지리적인 요건뿐만 아니라, 공통된 단일 정체성의 가설을 피한 채 서로 간의 차이를 주장하고 있는 인종, 젠더, 민족성과 같은 개념도 포함하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 어떤 지역의정체성을 이야기할 때, 그곳에 대해 말하여지는 역사들, 그 역사들이 말하여지는 방식, 그리고 어떤 역사가 지배적이었느냐 하는 문제들을 포함하여, 소수자를 배제시키지 않고 다양한 이야기들을 해야 하는 개방성이 필요하다. 이런 문화적이고 역사적인 맥락에 있어, 윌라 캐더는 놀라운 개방성을 보여준다. 그녀는 서부를 배경으로한 자신의 소설들 『오 개척자들이여!』와 『대주교에게 죽음이 오다』를 통해, 널리 퍼져 고착되다시피 한 서부의 정체성을 새로이 발견하여 재인식하도록 하기 때문이다. 캐더는 주변부로 밀려나 있던 땅/자연, 여성과 소수자를 끄집어내어 중앙에 세움으로써, 미국 서부는 일관성 있는 미국 정체성이 나타나는 지역이라는 통념을 깨고 서부를 역동적이고 변화하는 지역으로 탈바꿈시키고, 침묵당한 소수자의 목소리들이역사 속에서 자신들의 존재를 주장하도록 한다. 그런 과정에서 그 목소리들이 미국의 전체 모습을 더욱 풍요롭게 하고, 그 목소리들로 인해 미국 형성에 관한 오랜 믿음과 가설들을 재평가할 수 있도록 해 준다.

영어초록

The traditional conception of a unified myth that has been widespreadis a general story which is rather artificial and constructive than true, like'Puritans' special mission to fulfil' and 'American national foundingmyth.' American culture and history when examined turn out to be partialand selective views of what American has been grounded in theprivileged status accorded to a white, male, and middle-class. It wasmade in the aim of Americans' understanding through the metanarrative,and it could be applied to the identity of the west in America. Therefore,when the locality of the west in America is told, a unified myth that isfocused on White Anglo-Saxon Protestant who consists of a main streamin the political, economical, and cultural area in America becomes adiscourse. And in this situation, the identity of the west in America that isprisoned in the white and male-centered, dominant discourse makes realand various stories excluded. However, when the locality is toldnowadays, diversity and multi-culturalism are needed except the mythicfactors that are intended to generalize in one-way. For the localityincludes not only geographical factors but also the conceptions of race,gender, and ethnic characteristics which insist on the differences betweenthem, avoiding their common identity. Therefore, when the identity of alocality is told, the openness which does not make minorities excluded is needed, including the histories on it, the ways how the histories are told,what history was dominant there. It means that new kinds of texts arecreated, interpreted, and studied in the changing, new age. FrederickJackson Turner's Frontier thesis is the most well-known attempt toprovide an explanation of American development in terms of conditionswithin the country itself, arguing that westward clash of civilization andsavagery created out of such conditions. Willa Cather also, according tothis definition, shows her amazing openness through her own novels, OPioneers! and Death Comes for the Archbishop setting in the west. Forshe makes us have a new understanding of the identity of the west whichhas been widespread and fixed. By drawing out earth/nature, women andminorities like Indians, and Mexican-Americans from the margins andlocating them in the center of the west, she breaks the generally acceptedidea presented in the identity of the west, makes the west a dynamic andchanging place, and makes the silenced earth/nature, women, andminorities sound with their voices in the history. In the process of it, shemakes us find out the various voices enrich the whole America andreevaluate the long-held belief and supposition in American history andculture by them.
