애니메이션 <대요천궁>에 사용된 색상의 상징적 의미에 관한 연구 : 중국 전통 오색관을 중심으로 (The study of the symbolic meaning of colors used in the animation "Uproar in the Heaven" - Focused on the traditional Chinese five color concept)

초록

1950년부터 중국은 민족적 특색을 표현한 우수 애니메이션을 제작하기 시작했으며, 대표적으로 <산수정(山水情)>, <대요천궁(大闹天宫)>, <나타요해(哪吒闹海)> 등의 작품은 국내외에서 많은 상을 받았다. 그러나 오늘날 대부분의 중국 애니메이션은 일본과 미국 애니메이션을 모방하고 있으며, 중국의 다양한 전통문화를 표현한 애니메이션은 극히 일부에 불과하다. 중국의 민족적 특색을 표현한 애니메이션이라 하더라도 관객들의 마음을 얻은 애니메이션은 현재까지 없다고 할 수 있다. 중국의 민족적 특색을 담은 애니메이션을 제작하기 위해서는 표면적인 중국식 그림이 아니라, 중국 전통과 민족 예술에 대한 깊이 있는 이해가 필요하다. 본 논문은 중국 애니메이션이 스타일과 색상 방면에서 다른 나라의 애니메이션과 달리 독특한 특징을 가질 수 있는 방법을 제시하기 위한 중국 전통의 오색관과 애니메이션에 대한 응용 연구이다. 중국 전통 오색관은 자연과 사회에 대한 중국 조상들의 사상과 인식이자, 홍(红), 황(黄), 청(青), 백(白), 흑(黑) 등 5가지 단색(单色)을 바탕으로 오랜 시간 생활과 문화가 축적되어 끊임없이 발전한 색상 관념(观念)이다. 또한, 중국 전통 색상 체계의 이론적 기초이자, 중국의 역사와 문화, 철학, 종교의 이론을 종합한 학설(学说)이다. 이를 기반으로 상하이 애니메이션 스튜디오(上海美术电影制片厂)가 제작한 컬러 장편 애니메이션 <대요천궁(大闹天宫)>에 등장한 손오공(孙悟空)과 옥황상제(玉皇大帝)의 불교적 의상 색상과 그 상징적 의미에 대한 분석을 진행하고자 한다.
색상은 첫 번째 시각적 언어이며, 캐릭터의 내적 심리 상태와 지위, 선악(善恶) 등을 표현하는 색상의 의미는 자연스럽게 관객들의 감정과 행동, 관점에도 영향을 미친다. 이렇게 중국 전통 오색관이 상징하는 그 의미는 오랜 역사를 지나면서 중국인들에게 점점 더욱 깊은 영향을 주어 왔다. 따라서 중국 전통 오색관의 색상 이념과 상징적 의미를 적용하여 중국식 애니메이션에 등장하는 캐릭터와 색상을 조합한다면, 중국 특유의 캐릭터 특징과 감정을 더욱 효과적으로 나타낼 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 이런 중국 전통색의 특성을 애니메이션 작품에서 찾아보고, 그 의미를 오색관에 의거해 분석함으로써 중국의 전통문화 활용의 한 방법을 알아보고자 한다.

영어초록

China has had many excellent Chinese-style animation since the 1950s. These animations are of distinctive Chinese national characteristics. They have won many awards both at home and abroad, such as "Feelings of Mountains and Waters", "Uproar In Heaven", "Why is the Crow Black-Coated" and so on. But nowadays, Chinese animations that mimics Japanese and American animation are very often, and there are few animation works with rich traditional Chinese culture. There are some works in the name of Chinese style, but they have not been fully accepted by the audiences. If one wants to create animated works of Chinese style, the author must have an in-depth understanding of Chinese traditional and folk art. Animation can not be designed only on the surface. This paper mainly studies the traditional five color concept in China and its application in animation. The purpose is to provide some references to differentiate Chinese animation from other countries in terms of style and color. The main content of this paper is to understand the concept and history of Chinese traditional five color views, and to know that this color system has reflected the ancestors’ concept of nature and society. On the basis of five monochromatic colors, red, yellow, green, white and black, it is a kind of complex color concept that has been developed and perfected continuously after a long period of accumulation and precipitation in the practice of life. It is the theoretical basis of Chinese traditional color system and a complete set of historical, cultural, philosophical and religious theories. Finally, this paper analyzes the colors and their symbolic meanings of the main roles in "Uproar In Heaven", a color long animation produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, including Sun Wukong, the Jade Emperor and Na Zha.
Color is the first visual language. The use of color symbols to express the inner feelings, status, good and evil of the characters will affect the audience's emotions, behaviors and opinions imperceptibly. The traditional Chinese five color concept has gone through such a long history, and its symbolic meaning has a more profound impact on Chinese people. Applying the color concept and symbolic meaning of Chinese traditional five color concept will further highlight the personalities and emotions of the roles in Chinese style animations. This paper takes the five-color view as the theoretical basis, and through the analysis of cartoons with traditional Chinese color, the author finds ways to flexibly use traditional Chinese culture.
