실시간 온라인 수업에 대한 교수자 인식 연구: A 대학의 사례를 중심으로 (Comparative Analysis of Instructors’ Perception of Synchronous Online Classes: A Case Study of a University)

초록

학습자 중심 교육을 실현할 수 있는 실시간 온라인 수업의 시대가 도래하고 있다. 특히, 교수자의 피드백이 중요한 실기·실습수업에서는 등에서는 실시간 온라인 수업을 적용하는 사례가 많아지고 있다. 이러한 시대의 흐름에 따라 교수자는 온라인 수업설계 역량을 증진하기 위한 노력을 지속하고 있지만, 교수자를 위한 대학의 지원은 몇몇 제한점이 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 대학의 교수를 대상으로 실시간 온라인 수업 운영에 대한 인식을 조사하고 분석하고, 대학 차원에서 실시간 온라인 수업설계를 위해 교수자에게 어떤 지원이 필요한지에 관한 시사점을 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위해 실시간 온라인 수업 운영에 대한 인식을 조사하고 분석하는 온라인 설문조사와 인터뷰가 시행되었으며, 총 61명의 교수자가 온라인 설문조사에 참여하였고, 총 5명의 교수자가 인터뷰에 참여하였다. 설문결과 실시간 온라인 수업과 관련한 자신의 수준을 초급이라고 생각한 교수자의 비율이 45명(74%)이었으며, 실시간 온라인 수업을 적용한 강의형태는 이론전달 위주의 강의기반이 23명(38%)으로 가장 높았고, 팀·토론 기반이 20명(33%)이었다. 면담 결과, 실시간 온라인 수업에서는 교수자는 조력자 및 학습 관리자로서 다양한 업무를 하므로 면대면 수업에 비해 많은 수업준비가 필요할 뿐만 아니라, 미디어 역량이 중요하다는 내용을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 대학에서의 교수지원 교육은 기술적인 측면에만 초점을 맞추지 말고 미디어 활용 역량을 위한 교육으로 확대해야 할 필요성이 있다는 점을 시사점으로 도출하였다. 본 연구는 실시간 온라인 수업의 중요성이 더욱 주목받는 현시점에서 교수자에 대한 요구조사 및 인식을 통해 어떻게 교육에 적용할 수 있을지에 대한 현장 적용 가능성 유무를 탐색하는 기초 연구가 되었다는 점과 실시간 교육에 대한 실천방안과 방향에 대한 시사점을 찾아냈다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Synchronous online classes enable student-centered learning and are increasingly applied in hands-on and practical training classes in which instructor feedback is important. In line with this trend, instructors strive to improve their design capabilities for synchronous online classes; however, they are faced with certain limitations in terms of university support for instructors. This study aims to investigate and analyze university professors’ perceptions of synchronous online class operations and to derive implications for the kind of university-level support that could be provided for instructors for online synchronous class design. To that end, we surveyed perceptions of online synchronous class operations through an online survey and an interview. A total of 61 instructors participated in the online survey, and a total of five instructors participated in the interview. The survey results show that 45 (74%) of the instructors consider themselves a beginner in relation to synchronous online classes. For the lecture type that implement synchronous online classes, theory-based lecture delivery was applied the highest with 23 instructors (38%), followed by team/discussion-based lectures with 20 instructors (33%). The interview results confirmed that since instructors take on various roles such as those of a facilitator and learning manager in real-time online classes, more time is required to prepare for synchronous online classes compared to face-to-face classes. Furthermore, media literacy capability was deemed important. Based on these results, it is suggested that, to provide appropriate support for instructors, universities must expand their focus on technical aspects to cover media literacy competency. This study is meaningful in that it provides basic research data exploring the applicability of synchronous online classes in the field of education, through a research on needs and perceptions of instructors. It provides implications for the implementation and direction of synchronous online classes, especially given the current environment where the importance of synchronous online classes is widely noticed. We expect this study to be used as a foundation in the development of the basics of the instruction and practice of synchronous online classes and anticipate diverse future studies using this study as their basis.
